Hollywood Babylon

Posted in Book Reports, GSU photo archive, History by chamblee54 on December 26, 2017

PG recently read Hollywood Babylon: The Legendary Underground Classic of Hollywood’s Darkest and Best Kept Secrets. It was the second time read the book. A yard sale last summer had a deluxe edition on sale. The man asked PG how much he thought it should cost. “If you are going by the amount of truth in it, the price should be a nickel.” In a fit of synchronicity, PG was on his way to a party, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. This is a repost.

HB is highly entertaining, despite those troubling concerns about the facts. The cover has an NSFW picture of Jayne Mansfield, where the top of her dress serves as a display case for her boobies. HB goes all TMI about the death of Miss Mansfield, but it is a model of good taste compared to Find a death. The *bottom line* is that Jayne Mansfield was not decapitated in that auto accident.

While asking Mr. Google whose jugs adorned the cover of HB, this article came up: Satan and Mummified Psychics: A Kenneth Anger Marathon at Sweat Records Tonight. Someone with too much free time was promoting an evening of the short films of Kenneth Anger. Mr. Anger, born Kenneth Wilbur Anglemyer, has the copyright credit for HB. PG suspects that other scribes helped out. In some parts, the prose is purpler than in others. Of course, when writing about Hollywood, it is fitting that a committee produced a book filled with lies.

The Miami story disputes the notion that Kenneth Anger was a child star. “Almost exactly 83 years, 7 months, and 21 days ago, a little boy named Anger was born in Santa Monica, California. (Actually, the kid’s birth name was Kenneth Wilbur Anglemyer.) He attended a school for child stars, did dance steps with Shirley Temple, and minced about as the changeling prince in the 1935 Warner Bros. movie version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. But all that might be bullshit. There’s not much documentation of Anger’s alleged child star days. The one legit source that seems to corroborate the claim is Mickey Rooney. He played Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and he says Anger’s mommy dressed him up as the girl named “Sheila Brown” who officially played the Changeling Prince.”

A website called Vice.com managed to snag an interview with Kenneth Anger. The introduction has this story. “He went on to recount the time Kenneth showed up at fellow director and mutual friend Curtis Harrington’s funeral at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery wearing a black raincoat, eyeliner, and fingernail polish. His shirt was opened to his navel, revealing the giant lucifer tattoo emblazoned across his chest, and he was accompanied by a boyish photographer who took pictures as Kenneth kissed Curtis’s corpse before its cremation. Before he was ejected from the premises, Kenneth handed John a small plastic vampire figurine that contained mint candies inside, clarifying its original use by saying, “It’s actually a dispenser for tickle-ribbed rubbers.”

The interview had a few high moments. VICE But it did attract the attention of sexologist Alfred Kinsey, whom you befriended. Did he encourage your work?

KA Yes. Kinsey was doing interviews for his book Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, and I don’t know… What if you are not human? The title is kind of awkward, but that was what he called his research book. He was basically a biologist, an expert on wasps, of all things. When he came to LA to do interviews, I met him. He came to see Fireworks at the Coronet Theatre at a midnight showing, and he wanted to buy a print for his collection at Indiana University. I agreed, and that was the first copy I ever sold. But I remained good friends with him until the end of his life.

VICE Do you have a favorite star from this era?

KA I love the career of Rudolph Valentino, who died at 31 and had an amazing trajectory in that short time. His life continues to fascinate me.

VICE Do you continue to find new information?

KA I have plenty of information on him. There are facts, and then there is gossip. I go for the facts, but I will listen to the gossip. [smiles]

VICE Your willingness to sift through the gossip was a point of contention with some people when Hollywood Babylon was published, especially after its second printing. Some have accused you of muckraking, and others have even gone further and claim that it contains factual inaccuracies.

KA Well, I’ve never been sued…

VICE In other words, your detractors can’t prove it.

KA No one ever came up to me and said, “Well, you made the whole thing up.” Because I didn’t.

HB is a fun book, with great pictures. The stories are mostly lies, but this is Hollywood we are talking about. With its continued popularity, there will be plenty of copies at yard sales and used book stores.

The quote of the week is from a Ukiah CA hotel manager. “.Mira said the dead woman’s name was Mary and that she and her companion had checked in on Monday and had stayed inside the nonsmoking room, smoking cigarettes. She did not know anything more about them. “How can we know who is a criminal and who is not a criminal?” Mira said. “We run a motel.”” (1154)

The story of the week was told in Texas. “A Bexar County sheriff’s deputy killed a 6-year-old boy Thursday afternoon while chasing down a wanted felon at a Schertz mobile home park. The felon, 30-year-old Amanda Lenee Jones, was trying to break into the boy’s family trailer at Pecan Grove Manufactured Home Community when she was apprehended by four deputies. They fatally shot her. One of their bullets, however, pierced through the trailer wall and hit the boy, identified as Kameron Prescott. Kameron, who was home early after his Cibolo elementary school released students at noon for Christmas break, was later pronounced dead at University Hospital. According to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, Jones had no apparent connection with Kameron or his family — she was just trying to evade police. Jones’ death concluded a nearly 2-hour chase, that began when a man called the sheriff’s office to report a stolen car around 11 a.m., and directed deputies to where he thought the Jones had taken it. The ensuing chase involved deputies swimming across Cibolo Creek and through the woods to track her down. … Salazar told reporters Thursday that he didn’t know what prompted deputies to fire at Jones, who was unarmed at the time of her death. Deputies alleged that she was carrying a gun earlier in the chase.

“The incident began at 10:48 a.m. when a man reported a woman had stolen his car. The caller said he knew who the woman was and where they could find her. Deputies were informed she was armed, Salazar said. Deputies eventually found her hiding in a closet at a house in the 11200 block of FM 1518, at which point she showed a gun and threatened to shoot a deputy, Salazar said. The woman then bolted from the home and ran away, going down a ravine and crossing a creek before disappearing into a wooded area. … During a 90-minute search of the wooded area, tracking dogs picked up and lost the woman’s scent several times. The woman eventually ran to the mobile home park, where two residents who crossed her path reported that she physically threatened them, Salazar said. The pilot of a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter circling overhead also reported the woman reached for her waistband several times, indicating she may be armed, the sheriff said. The pilot watched as the woman tried breaking into several mobile homes in the area. She then made her way to the child’s home, where deputies closed in on her.”

In an exclusive interview with News 4 San Antonio, the family shared the final words they told Amanda Lenee Jones, 30, just moments before Bexar County Deputies shot and killed her. Jessica is Jones’ girlfriend. She told News 4 San Antonio Jones’ had called her from a trailer at the Pecan Grove neighborhood. “She said, I’m naked. I’m scared and I’m running in boxers and my bra. I think they are (going to) get me. I have to go, I love you,” explained Jessica. … “She didn’t deserve to die, neither did that boy,” said Renee Jones, the suspect’s mother. … Amanda Jones does have an extensive criminal history, mostly drug charges. Bexar County Deputies are still searching for a handgun they say Jones had at some point Thursday during a prolonged pursuit. Jones’ family doesn’t believe that a handgun will be found or that Jones’ had a gun during Thursday’s incident.” (story includes video of family) (1151 – 1152)

10 other stories are considered noteworthy. More details released about officer-involved shooting in Randolph County “Police say troopers responded to a residence in Valley Head at around 9:40 a.m. after receiving a report that 52-year-old Spencer Crumbley was threatening the kill some of his family members with a gun. They also received a report that Crumbley was threatening to kill all responding law enforcement. Officials say Crumbley came out of the residence but refused the troopers’ request to have a peaceful resolution. They say Crumbley demanded to see the family members he had threatened, stating there would be a shootout if his demand was not met. Police say Crumbley grabbed a shovel and went towards the residence, where the family members were. The troopers were unable to apprehend Crumbley.Officials say Crumbley attempted to strike troopers with the shovel, before throwing the shovel and making a move toward what troopers believed to be another weapon. One of the troopers then fired at Crumbley. ” (1142)

“The man called police at about 6:25 p.m. from a home in the 23000 block of Avon and told them he had a firearm and hatchet, indicating “he was going to shoot up the neighborhood,” said Steve Cooper, director at the city’s Public Safety Department. When officers arrived at the home, they talked to the caller’s mother, escorted her to the porch and went inside, Cooper said. There, the man, 48, confronted them and “advanced toward the officers wielding the hatchet in a threatening manner,” Cooper said. “One of the officers was forced to shoot the subject.” (1143)

“Police responded about 6 p.m. Tuesday to a burglary … When officers arrived, they found two suspects in the home, police said. One person fled, and the other ( Shaquille Rogers) pulled out a knife. Police said the officers feared for their lives and fired at the suspect.” (1144)

“Crews at the scene say a 33-year-old man, Robert Edwards, had a weapon and refused to follow officers’ orders to drop the gun. A responding officer shot the man three times in the doorway of a trailer. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators say the man was making suicidal posts on social media prior to officers responding. The person the victim was communicating with on social media called police, according to authorities. Police say the man was holding either a BB or pellet gun when he was shot by officers.” (1147)

“SDSO deputies from the Vista substation began a pursuit of a vehicle in Vista for unknown reasons sometime before 3:10 p.m., SDSO said. The man driving a dark blue or black sedan had a female passenger inside while leading deputies east towards Oceanside at speeds of about 50 miles per hour, Oceanside Police Department (OPD) Officer Thomas Bussey said. The driver headed towards a residential area on Roselle Avenue, off College Boulevard, where the dark sedan struck another car. That is when the driver attempted to bail out of the vehicle, Bussey said. One deputy fired on the man. It was not clear if the driver was armed at the time and the situation leading up to the shooting was not made available. The driver was declared dead at the scene.” (1148)

Officials with FPD say that around 6:20 p.m. on Thursday an officer with the department was at the intersection of McCormick School Road and Broadway “when he heard a female screaming for help” from the passenger seat of a truck being driven by Frankie Larry Anchondo. When the officer tried to stop the truck, it sped off and began to drive recklessly, police say. Eventually it stopped moments after the female “either fell or jumped out of the passenger side” of the truck, and Anchondo stepped out of the truck as well. At some point the officer fired at him, killing him. It’s unclear at this time what transpired before the gun was discharged.” (1149)

“A burglary suspect was shot and killed by a Sonoma County sheriff’s detective at a Ukiah (Mendocino County) motel Thursday night after her accomplice leveled a gun at officers, officials said Friday. The dead woman, whose name was not released, was also armed, said Sgt. Spencer Crum of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. The woman was found inside the Sunrise Inn after the detective fired an unknown number of rounds at her companion, Crum said. ,,, deputies from Sonoma and Mendocino counties and Ukiah police went to the budget motel at about 8 p.m. after receiving information that the two Sonoma County burglary suspects were there. “One detective shot an undetermined amount of rounds and a male suspect was ultimately taken into custody. The second suspect was found deceased,” Crum said. … A woman who identified herself as the motel manager said multiple shots were fired into the motel room. The shots “were from outside, and they broke the glass in the bathroom, and the lady was in the bathroom,” said the manager, who would give only her first name, Mira. Mira said the dead woman’s name was Mary and that she and her companion had checked in on Monday and had stayed inside the nonsmoking room, smoking cigarettes. She did not know anything more about them. “How can we know who is a criminal and who is not a criminal?” Mira said. “We run a motel.”” (1154)

“The first shooting took place at about 4:10 p.m. when Ahmed Aminamin El-Mofty allegedly opened fire on a Capitol Police officer in his cruiser, striking the vehicle several times, but missing the officer. The shooting took place just steps from the Pennsylvania state Capitol Building. About a half hour later, the same man is suspected to have opened fire on a female officer who was struck once, but is in good condition at a local hospital, according to (Dauphin County District Attorney Ed) Marsico. Capital Police pursued the suspect to a residential area, who then allegedly opened fire on them with two handguns, Marsico said. The officers fired back, striking and killing the suspect. None of the officers were struck. Marsico said there was “no doubt” the man was targeting police officers.” (1156)

Pocatello ID At 7:40 p.m., Pocatello Police were called to 1540 Homer Drive in Pocatello. Police called for additional support to deal with a man inside the residence with a gun. Bannock County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded. At some time during the incident, a Bannock County deputy discharged their duty weapon. One person was killed in the incident.” (1157)

Chesnee SC The Chesnee police said one person was dead and another person was hurt after a car pulled out in front of a Chesnee police officer who was driving to work Friday morning…. the initial reports were that a car pulled in front of the officer on US 221 and was struck on the driver’s side of the vehicle. Troopers said the officer was injured and transported to Spartanburg Regional. The officer was wearing a seatbelt, troopers said. … The driver and passenger were not wearing seatbelts … The deceased driver was later identified as 30-year-old Devan Rachad Stevenson.” (1158)

Until 2009, PG had never heard of Mithras.

Mithras is a Persian deity, from the Zoroaster tradition.(That is pronounced Zor uh THRUS ta.) Not much is known about Mithras … did he really exist, or was he a legend? There was a cult of Mithras in the first century Roman empire.

There are supposed to be similarities between Mithras and Jesus. These include the virgin birth, the birth on December 25, and rising from the dead after three days. Some spoilsports say the early christians grafted Jesus onto the legend of Mithras.

One indication that this might be true is The Catholic Encyclopedia.
“Some apparent similarities exist; but … it is quite probable that Mithraism was the borrower from Christianity.” This repost has pictures from “The Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library”.

With one day before it was due, PG finished reading Flannery: A Life of Flannery O’Connor , by Brad Gooch. The author is a professor of English at William Patterson University in New Jersey. He spares no citations, to show where he gets his information. This is a repost.

Chamblee54 has written before about Miss O’Connor , and repeated the post a year later. There is a radio broadcast of a Flannery O’Connor lecture. (The Georgia accent of Miss O’Connor is much commented on in the book. To PG, it is just another lady speaking.)

Mary Flannery O’Connor was born March 25, 1925 in Savannah GA. The local legend is that she was conceived in the shadow of St. John the Baptist Cathedral, a massive facility on Lafayette Square. Her family did leave nearby, and her first school was just a few steps away. This is also a metaphor for the role of the Catholic Church in her life. Mary Flannery was intensely Catholic, and immersed in the scholarship of the church. This learning was a large part of her life. How she got from daily mass, to writing stories about Southern Grotesque, is one mystery at the heart of Flannery O’Connor.

Ed O’Connor doted on his daughter, but had to take a job in Atlanta to earn a living. His wife Regina and daughter Mary Flannery moved with him, to a house behind Christ The King Cathedral. Mr. O’Connor’s health was already fading, and Mother and Daughter moved in with family in Milledgeville. Ed O’Connor died, of Lupus Erythematosus, on February 1, 1941.

Mary Flannery went to college in Milledgeville, and on to the Iowa Writer’s Workshop. She dealt with cold weather, went to Mass every day, and wrote. She was invited to live at an artists colony called Yaddo, in upstate New York. She lived for a while with Robert and Sally Fitzgerald in Connecticut, all while working on her first novel, “Wise Blood”. In 1950, she was going home to Milledgeville for Christmas, and had been feeling poorly. She went to the hometown doctor, who thought at first that the problem was rheumatoid arthritis. The illness of Flannery O’Connor was Lupus Erythematosus.

Miss O’Connor spent much of that winter in hospitals, until drugs were found that could help. She moved, with her mother, to a family farm outside Milledgeville, which she renamed Andalusia. She entered a phase of her life, with the Lupus in relative remission, and the drugs firing her creative fires, where she wrote the short stories that made her famous.

Another thing happened when she was recuperating. Flannery was reading the Florida “Market Bulletin”, and saw an ad for “peafowl”, at sixty five dollars a pair. She ordered a pair, and they soon arrived via Railway Express. This was the start of the peacocks at Andalusia, a part of the legend.

During this period of farm life and writing, Flannery had several friends and correspondents. There was the “Bible Salesmen”, Erik Langkjaer, who was probably the closest thing Flannery had to a boyfriend. Another was Betty Hester, who exchanged hundreds of letters with Miss O’Connor. This took place under the stern eye of Regina O’Connor, the no nonsense mother-caregiver of Flannery. (Mr. Gooch says that Betty Hester committed suicide in 1998. That would be consistent with PG stumbling onto an estate sale of Miss Hester in that time frame.)

The book of short stories came out, and Flannery O’Connor became famous. She was also dependent on crutches, and living with a stern mother. There were lectures out of town, and a few diverse personalities who became her friends. She went to Mass every day, and collected books by Catholic scholars. Flannery was excited by the changes in the church started by Pope John XXIII, and in some ways could be considered a liberal. (She supported Civil Rights, in severe contrast to her mother.)

In 1958, Flannery O’Connor went to Europe, including a trip to the Springs at Lourdes. Her cousin Katie Semmes (the daughter of Captain John Flannery, CSA) pushed Flannery hard to go to the springs, to see if it would help the Lupus. Flannery was reluctant…” I am one of those people who could die for his religion sooner than take a bath for it“. When the day for the visit came, Flannery took a token dip in the waters. Her condition did improve, briefly. (It is worth speculating here about the nature of Flannery’s belief, which was apparently more intellectual than emotional. Could it be that, if she was more persuaded by the mystical, emotional side of the church, and taken the healing waters more seriously, that she might have been cured?)

At some point in this story, her second novel came out, and the illness blossomed. Much of 1964 was spent in hospitals, and she got worse and worse. On August 3, 1964, Mary Flannery O’Connor died,

PG remembers the first time the name Flannery O’Connor sank in. He was visiting some friends, in a little house across from the federal prison.

Rick(?) was the buddy of a character known as Harry Bowers. PG was never sure what Harry’s real name was. One night, Rick was talking about Southern Gothic writers, and he said that Flannery O’Connor was just plain weird. ”Who else would have a bible salesman show up at a farm, take the girl up into a hayloft, unscrew her wooden leg and leave her there? Weird.”

Flannery O’Connor was recently the subject of a biography written by Brad Gooch. The book is getting a bit of publicity. Apparently, the Milledgeville resident was a piece of work.

PG read some reviews of this biography, and found a collection of short stories at the library. The book included ” Good Country People”, the tale about the bible salesman. Apparently, this story was inspired by a real life incident. (Miss O’Connor had lupus the last fifteen years of her life. She used crutches.) And yes, it is weird. Not like hollywood , but in the way of rural Georgia.

Some of the reviews try to deal with her attitudes about Black people. On a certain level, she is a racist. She uses the n word freely, and her black characters are not inspiring people. The thing is, the white characters are hardly any better, and in some cases much worse.

The stories are well crafted, with vivid descriptions of people and places. The reader floats along with the flow of the story, until he realizes that Grandma has made a mistake on a road trip. The house she got her son to look for is in Tennessee, not Georgia. She makes him drive the family car into a ditch. Some drifting killers come by. Grandma asks one if he prays, while his partner is shooting her grandchildren. Weird.

In another story, a drifter happens upon a pair of women in the country. The daughter is thirty years old, is deaf, and has never spoken a word. The drifter teaches her to say bird and sugarpie. The mother gives him fifteen dollars for a honeymoon, if he will marry her. He takes the fifteen dollars and leaves her asleep in a roadside diner.

There was a yard sale one Saturday afternoon. It was in a house off Lavista Road, between Briarcliff and Cheshire Bridge. The house had apparently not been painted in the last forty years. Thousands and thousands of paperback books were on the shelves. The lady taking the money said that the lady who lived there was the friend, and correspondent of, the “Milledgeville writer” Flannery O’Connor. This is apparently Betty Hester, who is mentioned in many of the biography reviews.

PG told the estate sale lady that she should be careful how she said that. There used to be a large mental hospital in Milledgeville, and the name is synonymous in Georgia with mental illness. The estate sale lady had never heard that.

This is a repost. Pictures are from “The Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library”. It was written like James Joyce. An earlier edition of this post had comments.

Fr. J. December 10, 2009 at 3:00 pm I am glad you take an interest in Flannery, but to say baldly that she is a racist is to very much misunderstand her. For another view on Flannery and race, you might want to read her short story, “Everything that Rises Must Converge.”
chamblee54 December 10, 2009 at 3:17 pm “On a certain level, she is a racist.” That is not the same as “baldly” labeling her a racist. (And I have a full head of hair, thank you). As a native Georgian, I am aware of the many layers of nuance in race relations. I feel that the paragraph on race in the above feature is accurate.

Killed By Police December 17

Posted in Killed By Police, Library of Congress by chamblee54 on December 17, 2017

19 people were Killed By Police in the United States last week. Here are the links. 1121 James Newman 1122 1123 Kyle Zahacefski 1124 Kyle Anthony Mihecoby 1125 Frank Lopez, 1126 Emanuel Miera 1127 Ira Crawford 1128 Stacy C. Micheletti 1129 1130 Marcia Aiken 1131 x1132 1133 1134 1135 1136 Clifford Keller 1137 1138 Adam Radcliffe 1139 Thomas Burns

5 of the victims were white. (1121. 1123, 1128, 1129, 1136) 2 of the victims were black. (1127, 1139) 1124 Kyle Anthony Mihecoby was a native american. 1126 Emanuel Miera was a latino. The race of 10 of the victims is unknown. (1122, 1125, 1130, 1131, 1132, 1133, 1134, 1135, 1137, 1138) 1130 Marcia Aiken was female.

1136 Clifford Keller fired at a police officer. 7 of the victims displayed a weapon. (1121, 1123, 1125, 1127, 1128, 1129, 1137) A taser was used in 3 incidents. (1124, 1125, 1126) 1130 Marcia Aiken was possibly suicidal.

An incident in Hamilton AL is considered suspicious. “The Marion County Sheriff’s Department and the Hamilton Police Department responded to a house on Reese Road in Hamilton after the county dispatch received a request from a person for officers to perform a welfare check on a person possibly in distress at the house. “At some point after the officers arrived at the residence, a confrontation with an armed subject occurred causing one of the officers to discharge his firearm,” said Captain Jonathan Winters.” comments: Donna “Failed to mention they were at wrong address. The man wasn’t confrontational.” Donna “… I know my father better than anyone. I KNOW for a fact he would have put his gun down if he knew it was an cop beating on his door in the.middle of the night. I can get affidavits from everyone that knew him about his non confrontational spirit. My dad has taught us to respect the law. …” Iroczee “This article is very one sided and lacking in information. In a round about way it states that the officer was at the wrong house just like Donna said. You see that when it says the person they were looking for was “later located”. This puts a 70 year old man being brought out of his sleep at 1:00 in the morning. Is it really unsual for someone to come to their door at that time of the morning armed? Did the officer identify himself? Was the man given the opportunity to disarm?” police radio recording (1132)

2 of the incidents were in Georgia. “An armed robbery suspect is dead and another one is in custody after they were confronted by a DeKalb County Police SWAT unit early Sunday morning at a DeKalb County gas station. The suspects encountered police at a Texaco station in the 4900 block of Snapfinger Woods Drive around 3 a.m., police said. They went to the gas station after robbing a Waffle House on Evans Mill Road about six miles to the east. According to authorities, after an extended stand-off at the gas station, there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and police, which left one of the suspects dead. The second suspect was taken into custody.” (1122)

Sheriff’s Office IDs woman, deputy in apparent ‘suicide by cop’ “Springfield GA— Officials are investigating an apparent ‘suicide by cop’ . … Effingham County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Paddleford Drive at Goshen Road around 7 p.m. Tuesday in response to an attempted suicide. Authorities say 50-year-old Marcia Metzger Aiken of Effingham was threatening suicide and was reportedly in possession of a firearm. According to a release from ECSO, deputies attempted to make contact with Aiken and “the situation escalated very quickly, resulting in the woman being shot.” Aiken was pronounced dead at the scene.” (1130)

8 other incidents are noteworthy. Police identify suspect shot, killed by officer after struggle in southeast OKC “Capt. Bo Matthews, with the Oklahoma City Police Department, said the incident began with an officer responding to a call about a man lying in the grass on the side of Southeast 59th Street and Mackleman Drive. Matthews said the man, later identified as 28-year-old Kyle Anthony Mihecoby, was not cooperating with the officer, Bethany Sears, so the officer used pepper spray on him, who then punched her in the face. An altercation ensued, Matthews said, and the officer used a Taser on the man. According to Matthews, the man was able to take the Taser away from the officer ;and attempted to use it on her. At that point, the officer fired her weapon, Matthews said. Mihecoby died at the scene, according to Matthews. The officer was taken to the hospital and is being treated for injuries to her face and hands.” (1124)

Man dies while in police custody in Pueblo; police asking for witnesses “Pueblo CO – A man behaving erratically on the interstate died Sunday after a struggle with Pueblo officers. On Wednesday, the coroner announced he could not immediately determine a cause of death. Further testing will likely take about 4-6 weeks according to Pueblo County Coroner Brian Cotter. The police department says officers were dispatched to I-25 near Eagle Ridge Boulevard just before 3:30 p.m. on reports of a man, Emanuel Miera, 26, walking back and forth across the interstate. He reportedly kept darting through traffic even after officers showed up and tried to talk with him. Police say they finally got the man off the interstate, but he still wouldn’t cooperate with officers. During the struggle, officers tased him once, which didn’t subdue him. Police finally got the man handcuffed and took him to Parkview Medical Center, where he later died.” (1126)

Body cam video shows moments officers fatally shot robbery suspect in Seattle park “The Seattle Police Department has released body camera video that shows the moments leading up to the fatal shooting of a robbery suspect by officers in a popular park. A woman was taken into custody. The shooting stemmed from a string of incidents that happened after a reported robbery at Forever 21 in the Northgate Mall about 10 p.m. Monday. Police said the two were shoplifting, and when a store manager confronted the couple, the man displayed a handgun, causing the manager to back away. The man and woman then fled to an apartment complex near the mall. When the apartment manager saw what he thought was a suspicious car in the parking lot, he went to investigate. Smartphone video shows the exchange between the apartment manager and the suspects. The suspects shouted profanities at the manager, who asked them to move their cars. As the suspects finally walked away, the man fired his gun into the ground toward the manager. The manager reported the incident to police as the couple drove away in an Audi. The gunman then drove off and the woman contacted police sometime after leaving the apartment complex. They found her at Holman Road and took her into custody. When officers noticed the man watching her at Holman Road, a car chase began with Seattle police. During the pursuit, the man fired multiple gunshots at officers in the 100 block of Northeast 80th Street. No officers were hurt. The pursuit continued as the driver entered Magnuson Park and came to a stop near the boat ramp. Body camera video [graphic warning at 3:55] shows the suspect ran from his car and into tall grass in the park. Police yell “put your hands up … You’re going to get shot … Don’t reach.” But the man started reaching toward his pocket, apparently brandishing a handgun. Officers opened fire.” video (1129)

1 Dead After Early Morning Officer-Involved Shooting “Northglenn CO Officers opened fire on two suspects in a stolen vehicle that accelerated toward them early Wednesday morning, leaving one dead and one injured, the Northglenn Police Department said. The shooting happened about 3:30 a.m. in the 10400 block of Franklin Way as officers investigated a stolen vehicle, police said. As officers tried making contact, the vehicle accelerated toward them, police said. Officers opened fire, hitting one of two suspects in the vehicle. … One suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and the second suspect was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries.” (1131)

KCSO investigating in-custody death in Boron “Bkersfield CA Kern County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating a man’s death, after he stopped breathing while in custody Wednesday. On Dec. 13 around 6:00 p.m. deputies were called out to the 24000 block of Juniper Avenue in Boron after reports of a man threatening neighbors. Deputies say the man was under the influence of drugs and he was touching himself inappropriately. When deputies tried to arrest the man, he started to resist…. With help from a bystander, they were able to arrest him. But KCSO says once the man was handcuffed, they realized he wasn’t breathing. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.” (1133)

1 suspect dead, 2 others injured in New Britain police-involved shooting “One person is dead and two others were injured in an officer-involved shooting that happened in New Britain on Thursday evening. It happened in the area of Chapman Street and Chapman court a little before 7 p.m. when police tried to stop a car. The car was suspected of having been involved in a series of armed carjackings in New Britain and surrounding towns over the past two weeks, police said. The most recent was on Monday, where police said shots were fired at one victim, and in a second incident a victim was pistol-whipped. Police said as officers tried to stop the car and apprehend the occupants, more than one officer fired their weapon. Three people were in the car, and were all hit by gunfire. … Police said there was at least one firearm in the car.” (1134)

“FBI Agent, Detective Shoot and Kill Robbery Suspect in Yonkers: Sources A bank robbery suspect was shot and killed by an FBI agent and a Yonkers detective Friday evening, three sources familiar with the investigation say. The agent and detective were conducting an investigation into the alleged bank robber near Van Cortlandt Park when they tried to pull him over at Aqueduct and McLean avenues for questioning, the sources told News 4. The two apparently saw the man with a weapon and fired at him, the sources said, adding that a gun believed to belong to the suspect was recovered at the scene. The man was pronounced dead at an area hospital, according to the sources.” (1135)

“Trooper fatally shoots driver after being dragged by vehicle Police say 30-year-old Adam Radcliffe of Wilmington was shot and killed when he attempted to flee police during a traffic stop, dragging a trooper as he fled. The incident began at 4:24 p.m. Friday. According to investigators, a trooper on patrol observed a burgundy Honda strike a pole and was driving erratically on Boxwood Road near Centerville Road in Wilmington. The driver, later identified as Radcliffe, then fled from the crash scene. The trooper followed Radcliffe’s vehicle to the Kirkwood Plaza Shopping Center on Kirkwood Highway. When the trooper approached the vehicle, Radcliffe allegedly took off with the trooper attached to the passenger side door, dragging him. The vehicle went down the access road for Kirkwood Plaza and turned left onto Farrand Drive. The trooper opened fire, striking Radcliffe. Radcliffe’s vehicle sped off down Farrand Drive. Police later located the burgundy Honda Civic off of Hammond Place at the end of Farrand Drive where it drove through a fence into a small creek. Radcliffe was removed from the vehicle and transported to the hospital where he died.” (1138)

More Tales Of The City

Whales of the city is about books four and six of the Tales of the City series. In this report, PG notes that he has yard sale copies of books two and three, but does not know if he read them. He soon learned that he had not read those two books. Significant Others, book five, is the one that PG read, found in the library eleven years later, and read again.

More Tales Of The City, book two of TOTC, is the subject of today’s book report. It begins with Micheal Tolliver’s Valentines Day Resolutions for 1977. “3. I will stop expecting to meet Jan-Michael Vincent at the tubs. 4. I will inhale poppers only through the mouth.” Cruise ship people wonder why Michael wore a T shirt advertising Crisco.

MTOTC occupies a totally different world from the 1988 scenery of Sure of You, book six. Consuming these stories out of sequence can lead to some head scratching. Either Armistead Maupin could see the future, and had a perverted sense of humor, or synchronicity is real.
SPOILER ALERT Things in various parts of TOTC will be discussed below. If you are spoiler sensitive, you can just skip over the text, and look at the pictures. These images are courtesy of The Library of Congress.
The end of MTOTC shows Michael Tolliver and Mary Ann Singleton bemoaning the departure of Burke Andrew. Mary Ann met Burke on a cruise ship. They had their moment, and Burke got a job in New York. Micheal goes back to his southern queen roots, and quotes Scarlett O’Hara… tomorrow is another day. Fast forward four books/eleven years. Burke is a married New York hotshot. He gets Mary Ann to leave San Francisco, finally, and move on to national stardom in the Big Apple.

86 is an expression meaning get out of here. On page 86 of MTOTC, we see this 1977 comment: “There are – and this is conservatively speaking – one hundred and twenty thousand practicing homosexuals within the city limits of San Francisco. … Those one hundred and twenty thousand homosexuals are going to grow old together, Arch. ….Think of it! The first gay nursing home in the history of the world!” The Arch mentioned in this sales pitch is Archibald Anson Gidde. He will die in book six. The obituary will use a euphemism.

A lot of those 120K P.H. were going to die between book two and book six. One of them is Dr. Jon Fielding, an on-and-off bf of Michael Tolliver. The two re-connect on the same cruise ship that facilitated Mary Ann’s romance. On page 109, Michael is fantasizing about having a decadent funeral. Jon listens appreciatively, then says “Don’t die, O.K.? Not until I’m through with you.” In less than five years, Jon will be through with Micheal, and everything else.

MTOTC is a fun book. It is not a documentary. A few of the plot twists will stretch your credibility. It is escapism, and is set in a more innocent era… back when things were still fun. Before we go, we need a couple of one star comments. Robert S. Marrinon “While Tales of the City had redeeming love and touching stories, “More Tales of the City” was simply filthy. I can see why it sold for one cent.” Rozanne “I can’t believe I read another book by this guy. He’s pretty awful.”
