The Butcher

Posted in Library of Congress, The Death Penalty, Undogegorized by chamblee54 on April 24, 2019

TRIGGER WARNING: This post is a bit gross. Proceed with caution. If you like, you can skip over the text, and enjoy the pictures. These images are from The Library of Congress.

The post before this borrowed text from Gartalker, known to the government as Gary Simmons. PG chatted with him a few times, and we moved on. The last time PG checked in, Gartalker was fighting cancer. That was in 2017. PG decided to take another look. He googled “Gary Simmons Mississippi.”

Gruesome murder, rape case recalled: Gary ‘The Butcher’ Simmons scheduled to be executed June 20 Before we go any further, note that GTBS was executed in 2012. GTBS is a different Gary Simmons.

“Simmons, at the time 33, and his former brother-in-law Timothy Milano, 21, were convicted of the murder of Texas man Jeffrey Wolfe, to whom they owed money for marijuana, and the rape of his girlfriend, Charlene Leaser. After Wolfe was shot dead by Milano, Simmons carved the body into pieces with knives that he had possibly sharpened earlier that day at work, testimony showed. He then dumped the pieces in the bayou near his Moss Point house.”

“The one picture I remember in particular is of the head that was recovered intact, chopped off from about here,” (District Attorney Tony) Lawrence said, gesturing across the middle of his neck. Instead, about 80 percent of Wolfe’s body was recovered, Lawrence estimated. It was the testimony of Charlene Leaser that solved the case, Lawrence said. Simmons had locked her in a large steel box and raped her. The 18-year-old Leaser was wearing only a sock when she was thrown into the box.”

Gary Carl Simmons Jr. Executed June 20, 2012 “Wolfe’s father Paskiel Wolfe reacted emotionally to the execution. “Do you think God is going to forgive you for doing such a good deed? No. You are going to go to Hell. And that is where you are gonna be. And I hope you burn in Hell. When you take your last breath I will be leaving to go and have a cold beer.”

Before Mr. Wolfe had his cold beer, Mr. Simmons had his final meal. “One Pizza Hut medium Super Supreme Deep Dish pizza, double portion, with mushrooms, onions, jalapeno peppers, and pepperoni; pizza, regular portion, with three cheeses, olives, bell pepper, tomato, garlic and Italian sausage; 10 8-oz. packs of Parmesan cheese; 10 8-oz. packs of ranch dressing; one family size bag of Doritos nacho cheese flavor; 8 oz. jalapeno nacho cheese; 4 oz. sliced jalapenos; 2 large strawberry shakes; two 20-oz. cherry Cokes; one super-size order of McDonald’s fries with extra ketchup and mayonnaise; and two pints of strawberry ice cream.”

The Simmons case was similar to a case in Georgia. “On March 28, 1984 a maintenance man employed at (Robert Dale) Conklin’s apartment complex was collecting aluminum cans from the trash dumpster when he discovered dissected human body parts, knives, bloody bed clothes, screwdriver, rope, credit cards, a wallet and miscellaneous papers belonging to George Crooks, all encased in black plastic garbage bags. The body parts were identified as those of attorney George Crooks, who was acquainted with Conklin and had begun a physical relationship with him. When Conklin’s apartment was searched, police found the bed clothing was missing and the mattress appeared to be blood-soaked. The jammed kitchen garbage disposal contained what appeared to be internal organs. When questioned, Conklin stated that he and Crooks were wrestling on the bed when he grabbed a screwdriver and stuck him, then pushed the screwdriver into his ear and wriggled the weapon around. Conklin admitted to dissecting the body and disposing of incriminating evidence in the dumpster. A book describing the dissection of a body was found on the bedroom floor. At the time of the murder, Conklin was on parole for Armed Robbery and Burglary.”

Mr. Conklin had a gourmet last meal. “Filet mignon wrapped with bacon; de-veined shrimp sautéed in garlic butter with lemon; baked potato with butter, sour cream, chives and real bacon bits; corn on the cob; asparagus with hollandaise sauce; French bread with butter; goat cheese; cantaloupe; apple pie; vanilla bean ice cream and iced tea.”

The Unique Lunacy Of A Language

Posted in GSU photo archive, Undogegorized by chamblee54 on April 23, 2019

This facility recently printed some commentary on the english language, courtesy of Gartalker Here is part two, not to be confused with number two. Weird is spelled correctly…you can’t have weird without we. Pictures are from the “The Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library”.
If all that wasn’t bad enough may I point out a few other basic flaws in our language that makes no sense to any one other than us

There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren’t invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.And why is it that writers write but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn’t the plural of booth, beeth? You have one goose, 2 geese; so one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices?

Doesn’t it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn’t preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Why doesn’t ‘Buick’ rhyme with ‘quick’

In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all.. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

Once I was in New England and I stopped at a Taco Bell because I actually wanted to taste something. Any thing that wasn’t boiled and maybe had just a little pepper on it. Any way by the time I had left ever kid in the place was saying, “Order that one more time Mr. We just love how you talk.” One girl asks me how long it took me to learn to talk that way. Yankees, you gotta love them.

In you are reading this, you obviously have too much free time. Here is part one.

All right, I will be the first to say I slaughter the English language. I will also admit my grammar is most likely some of the worse of any blog you might happen across.
Still with that said, allow me to try to defend myself.
English is a stupid language. I mean taking everything into consideration I say that I don’t do too bad.
Below are twenty different examples that I have to put up with everyday in order to entertain you my wonderful readers.
1) The bandage was wound around the wound.
2) The farm was used to produce produce.
3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.
4) We must polish the Polish furniture.
5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.
6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.
7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.
8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.
9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.
10) I did not object to the object.
11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid.
12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row
13) They were too close to the door to close it.
14) The buck does funny things when the does are present.
15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line..
16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.
17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail.
18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear..
19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend? This is a repost.

Today is Confederate Memorial Day in Georgia. It is an ancient question…how to honor the soldiers from the side that lost. They were just as valiant as the Union Soldiers. Considering the shortages of the Confederate Armies, the Rebels may have been just a bit braver.

The issue of Federalism is a defining conflict of the American experience. What powers do we give the Federal Government, and what powers do we cede to the States? The Confederacy was the product of this conflict. The Confederate States were a collection of individual states, with separate armies. This is one reason why the war turned out the way it did.

This is not a defense for slavery. The “Peculiar institution” was a moral horror. The after effects of slavery affect us today. Any remembrance of the Confederacy should know that. This does not make the men who fought any less brave.

It is tough to see the War Between the States through the modern eye. It was a different time, before many of the modern conveniences that are now considered necessities. Many say that the United States were divided from the start, and the fact the union lasted as long as it did was remarkable. When a conflict becomes us against them, the “causes” become unimportant.

The War was a horror, with no pain medicine, and little that could be done for the wounded. It took the south many, many years to recover. The healing continues in many ways today. Remembering the sacrifices made by our ancestors helps.

Was The Election Really Stolen?

Posted in Georgia History, Library of Congress, Politics, Race by chamblee54 on April 20, 2019

One misty four twenty morning, PG was looking for something to post. He looked to 042018, one year ago. He found Stacey And Stacey. The story is repeated below. It was the first time PG paid attention to Stacey Abrams. It would not be the last, unfortunately.

Since that nightmare election, PG has wanted to assemble his thoughts about Ms. Abrams. Many people see her as a hero. PG does not. Stacey Abrams has a talent for publicity. Certain parts of the media adore her, and report her antics uncritically. Would Ms. Abrams would be a competent Governor/Senator? That is a good question.

PG wrote about Ms. Abrams, and the nightmare election, several times.
Stacey and Stacey ~ The battle of fair street bottom
Politically Relevant ~ Georgia voter registration
Why Did The 1956 Legislature Change The Flag? ~ Brian and Stacey
We were lied to ~ Rally At The Capitol Turns Nasty
The Problem With Stacey 2015 Edition ~ The Problem With Greg Palast

Brian Kemp was the worst Republican Gubernatorial candidate in many years. Ms. Abrams was much more appealing. Mr. Kemp made a political mistake when he did not resign as Secretary of State, after he won the Republican primary. If he had done so, the voter suppression uproar would have been much less potent.

The truth is that the counties register voters, and count the votes. The SOS office plays a limited role. Unfortunately, the truth does not make a good campaign issue. Voter Suppession™ was demagogued into submission by Stacey Abrams, and the clickbait media.

Ms. Abrams screamed Voter Suppession™ every chance she got. It was her main campaign issue. The clickbait media knew a good story when they smelled one. Racist Republican Rascal Steals Election In Honey Boo Boo Land!!! If you are not as outraged as your neighbor, then you must be a racist. Threatening to call someone the r-word is a powerful campaign tactic.

After the election, PG was looking for something. He stumbled onto The New Georgia Problem. It was a 2015 article about The New Georgia Project, a voter registration organization that Stacey Abrams fronted. NGP had a lot of problems. Ms. Abrams did not look good.

Among other things, NGP workers were poorly trained. A lot of their registrations were thrown out for being illegible and incomplete. This was also a problem with many voter registrations in the 2018 election. While the “exact match” law got all the attention, many of the registrations were thrown out for being illegible and incomplete.

The infamous AP story about 53,000 rejected registrations came out a month before election day. PG saw this, and realized that whatever was said could not be believed. The AP story was quoted as gospel. Few challenged the findings, even though the only documentation offered was “An analysis of the records obtained by The Associated Press.” Soon, Greg Palast put his hat on, and contributed to the noise and confusion. Discerning voters like PG just wanted it to be over.

Did Brian Kemp steal the election? It is possible. Mr. Kemp is no paragon of virtue. Georgia’s election machines are notoriously insecure. However, many of the wild-eyed charges leveled by Ms. Abrams have never been proven. Nobody has ever said how deleting voters-who-do-not-vote targets people of color. In the end, Brian Kemp will serve a term as Governor, and Stacey Abrams will make noise about it. As someone said about the New Georgia Project, “It’s a glaring example of what makes people sick about politics.”

Until Thursday, PG had been in blissful denial of the Georgia Governor’s election. Except, that is, for the clown car antics of the republicans. The Democrats had Stacey Abrams, aka black Stacey, opposing Stacey Evans, aka white Stacey. The Republicans are almost certain to win in November, even with a certified idiot like Casey Cagle.

The happy ignorance was interrupted by facebook on thursday. A FBF posted a link to this article, Statement by the Metro Atlanta Chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America on the vulgar hit piece against member Anoa Changa. The vhp, posted by the notorious white supremacists at WABE, was titled Atlanta Activist Uses Russian-Backed Media To Spread Message. It seems as though a local activist, Anoa Changa, utilized a Russian owned broadcast outlet to spread her message. This was news to PG, as well as the 99.9% of the population that never listens to Sputnik.

PG did not see what was so horrible about the WABE piece, and was prepared to ignore it. Then he saw something in the article. “Changa helped lead a protest last year at the progressive Netroots Nation convention drowning out the speech of Stacey Evans, a Democratic candidate for governor in Georgia. Changa and the other protesters chanted “trust black women.” Evans is white, while her Democratic primary opponent Stacey Abrams is black. Changa supports Abrams.” A bit of research turned up a video, Protesters Harass Stacey Evans Candidate Gov. Georgia Aug 12, 2017.

This incident was noted on facebook. “Yup, don’t see what the problem is. Was Evans run out of town? Silenced? Is she still in the race?” “I fully support activists of color disrupting any centrist white person running for office. Stop ignoring the fundamental power dynamic in play because of white supremacist patriarchy.” “Good luck winning the election”

Others are grossed out by this type of behavior. Is this what happens to people running for public office? To be shouted down in public forums, and say “this is what democracy looks like.” Maybe smells like is more appropriate. Maybe we are not mature enough to allow the luxury of free speech. Maybe an election campaign is a time to shout down your opponent … and call those who do not applaud your playground-bully tactics a racist.

Stacey Abrams And Stacey Evans had a discussion of the incident. Stacey Evans condemned the protest. Stacey Abrams did not. “I do not believe that you silence those who feel they are voiceless, because the minute we do that we are no better than those who tell people they can’t kneel in protest.”

Anoa Changa is far from voiceless. She is not going to be silenced by waiting until someone else is through speaking. To compare this abusive protest, to pro football players and the national anthem, is ridiculous. Stacy Abrams has no business being Governor of Georgia. This is a repost. Pictures for this paranormal panorama are from The Library of Congress.

Can I Stay In Your Tent?

Posted in Library of Congress, Undogegorized by chamblee54 on April 19, 2019

“Hey! New member here. I‘m going on the upcoming retreat in Tennessee, and am wondering if anyone has extra room in their tent for this newbie. Let me know. Looking forward to my first trip with the group.” This message came up on facebook the other day. As might have been expected, some of the replies were not supportive. Going on a camp out, without adequate equipment, is not a good look. The phrase “camping without a flashlight” comes to mind.

PG came into the discussion late, which is probably a good thing. A man who tells the truth should keep one foot in the saddle. Luther Mckinnon Whether or not you have a tent, you will need a tarp. It is almost certain to rain.

____ ___ I’m not making it to this one, but I’m new to this kind of camping (used to desert camping). I’m happy to break off another thread for any tips and whatnot, because I do (eventually – finance, time, and ability allowing) plan to make it. How do you keep your tent dry when it rains? Is there stuff in addition to a tarp? How is that used? Do you have links or articles you can refer to so those of us seasoned with camping can brush up on this environment?

Luther Mckinnon 1 – There is no level ground where you are going. Most places will be downhill in some way, and if it rains hard enough, all bets are off.
2 – Get a tarp that is bigger than your tent. 16′ x 20′ should do it. Get some plastic tent stakes, rope, string, and a couple of packs of bungee cords. Get something plastic to put under your tent, to keep the ground moisture out. A plastic dropcloth usually works.
3 – Set up your tent somewhere, and put the tarp over it, before you go to TN. You might make a few mistakes. There is a learning curve.
4 – Go to the short end of your tarp. Find the grommet in the middle. Tie a brightly colored string in this grommet. This way, you can tell easily which side is the shorter side, and which grommet is in the middle. You get tired of counting grommets.
5 – Set your tent up. put rocks around the corners of the area your tent will be setting. Go over this area, and remove all rocks and branches. There will probably be roots to work around.
6 – Spread the tarp over the tent. Take some bungee cords, and go from the front corner to a tree. There are lots and lots of trees. The idea is to have the front of your tarp sticking up a bit, so that the rain will slope down, and fall off the tarp. You do not want the rain to puddle.
7 – Go to the back of the tent, and stake the tarp down to the ground. You want to cover the entire tent, with a foot, or so, of overhang.

This is a facebook post, not an instruction manual. There is probably something left out. Someone will have another way to do all this. Camping methods are like opinions and assholes.

The thread mentioned a stash of tents in the barn. The last time PG was there, he had a faulty shock cord on his tent. He went looking through a medusa-like mass of shock cords. PG quickly gave up on finding anything usable. He did not look in the goat boutique.

A person going to the facility is likely to suffer culture shock the first time. The last thing this person needs is find a usable tent, in the caprine chaos of the barn. Walmart is an option. You might get lucky at a yard sale. Whatever you do, it is a good idea to set the tent up at home first. That way, if you have to struggle to understand the instructions, you can figure it out when you are not in an unfamiliar environment. Pictures today are from The Library of Congress.

Drop City

Posted in Book Reports, Library of Congress by chamblee54 on April 18, 2019

Drop City, by T.C. Boyle, is the latest book PG read. DC is the rip-roaring tale of a 1970 California commune. The existential experiment turns to shit, literally. After a disastrous summer solstice celebration, a decision is made to move. Someone has a cabin in Alaska. Why not move the freak show to the frozen north? What could go wrong?

The story is thoroughly entertaining. Mr. Boyle is a prose craftsmen. The quotable sentences are less important than the story. Never mind that the details don’t always add up. Sess Harder has his dogs killed, while he is busy getting married. Pamela, his mail order bride, drags him to a rescue center in Fairbanks, and Sess reluctantly adopts a dog. Fast forward a couple of months, and suddenly Sess has five dogs, and is training them to go trap furs. Did Amazon the Sears catalog deliver mush dogs, 150 miles north of Fairbanks, in 1970?

Maybe the Amazon one star comments will help. Matthew T. “To find this book enjoyable is to admit a lack of morals.” mokshasha “this book MUST have been written by a committee” Will Szal “My guess is that our author, Boyle, is an atheist in the most pessimistic of ways.” watzizname “even tho I am neither hippie nor Afro-American, I am disgusted and offended.”

The term Afro-American had not been coined in 1970. We don’t know what Lester, and the others, called themselves. They arrive at Drop City, CA. Lester stays in a cabin, and does not contribute to the community. After an ugly incident in the cabin, Lester is asked to leave. There is more trouble, as the decision to move to Alaska is announced. Lester is stopped at the border, going into Canada. You might think this is the last we see of him.

The rest of the circus moves on to Boynton, a two saloon town 150 miles north of Fairbanks, AK. Drop City North is a three hour canoe ride upriver. After a few weeks, Lester shows up. We don’t know how this happened. The last we see of Lester, he is panning for gold in a river.

Lester is a side story. The focus of DC are the hippies, a colorful crew of indeterminate number. They are the frozen people. The hippies find people already living in the bush. Some are friendlier than others. Some will come to regret extending a welcome.

The hippies arrive sometime in July. By October, the temperature is -20, presumably fahrenheit. In that time, the hippies have built a collection of log cabins, and squirrled away supplies for the winter. Meanwhile, Sess, and his bride, have worked like crazy to store up enough food to last the winter. Sess was already there, knew what he was doing, and still had to work like crazy. How did a traveling hippie circus do much more, starting from scratch?

Communal life, and bush country existence, are not glamorous. As the winter approaches, things get ickier all the time. When you read a story like DC, you are happy to be able to put the book down, and move on with your own life.

PG is connected to an *intentional community* in Tennessee. This IC has been in place for forty years, with many ups and downs. The nuts and bolts reality of keeping the water line unclogged is not noticed by many of the people who come to gatherings. When PG first went to the IC, there was no water line. You took a bucket to the spring. Someone had to build that line.

One job PG has taken on is the parking. This is where the muggle world interfaces with the magic kingdom, and sometimes the gears need grease. Every afternoon, more cars come in. The parking lot is two ridges over. No, you cannot leave your car here just for tonight. Whose car is that blocking the driveway? While the fantasy flows at the bottom of the hill, somebody has to find a way to stash all the vehicles. Not to mention building roads, and shipping gasoline.

Drop City is a lot more fun to read than it was to live. Fiction is supposed to provide an escape, before you go back to your life of quiet desperation. Pictures today are from The Library of Congress.

Date Rape Drug Warning

Police are warning all men who frequent clubs, parties & local pubs to be alert and stay cautious when offered a drink by any woman. Many females use a date-rape-drug on the market called
‘Beer’.
The drug is found in liquid form and is available anywhere. It comes in bottles, cans, from taps, and in large kegs.
‘Beer’ is used by female sexual predators at parties and bars to persuade their male victims to go home and sleep with them.
A woman needs only to get a guy to consume a few units of
‘Beer’ and then simply ask him home for no-strings-attached sex. Men are rendered helpless against this approach. After several applications of ‘Beer’, men will often succumb to the desires to sleep with women to whom they would never normally be attracted. Men often awaken with only hazy memories of exactly what happened to them the night before, often with just a vague feeling that ‘something bad’ occurred.
At other times these unfortunate men are swindled out of their life’s savings, in a familiar scam known as ‘a relationship’. In extreme cases, the female may even be shrewd enough to entrap the unsuspecting male into a longer-term form of servitude and punishment referred to as ‘marriage’. Men are much more susceptible to this scam after
‘Beer’ is administered, and sex is offered by the predatory females. Many men cannot resist the temptation.
If you fall victim to this
‘Beer ‘ scam and the women administering it, there are male support groups where you can discuss the details of your shocking encounter with similarly victimized men. For the support group nearest you, just look up ‘Golf Courses’ in the phone book.
