Common Sense Quote

Posted in Book Reports, Commodity Wisdom, History, Library of Congress by chamblee54 on March 19, 2022

0312 – We’re going to conduct a facebook experiment. I posted a video from Dr. John Campbell. He discussed some reputed side effects of the Pfizer vaccine. Soon, Facebook sent me an admonition. “… The post includes information that independent fact-checkers said was partly false. …” The suspicion here is that Facebook has a problem with Dr. Campbell.

On to today’s experiment. I’m listening to another video from Dr. Campbell. He admits that he made some errors in his interpretation of the Pfizer data. He goes on to say “you can’t put solid footsteps into fresh air you need solid ground.” This is just a common sense quote. My plan for today is to make a video segment of the CSQ, and post it on Facebook. Lets see if the fact-checkers have a problem with it. As of March 19, Facebook has been silent.

0314 – I was through with Blocked and Reported, and making great progress on my picture. It was time to go out. I had two destinations. One was the gym. The other was the library. I had a book, The Santa Suit, to return. Think — inside the work — outside the work.

TSS is not a great book. Perhaps that was what was needed. With the book I am starting, quotables lie on every page. The desire to go in depth may prove irresistible. However, I read to have fun. Sometimes a trifle like TSS is what I need. Just read a story, without provoking great thought. The fact that TSS is easy to read indicates that the author worked like hell. Easy writing makes tough reading.

0318 – I’ve stumbled onto this podcast series about the shooting of Martin Luther King, The MLK Tapes. The shooting was quickly blamed on James Earl Ray. He was supposed to be a racist/white supremacist, and most people believed he was guilty. It turns out that there were serious problems with the government’s case. The podcast series is downright fascinating. It’s not something I’ve really thought about a whole lot. I just accepted the conventional wisdom, and went on with my life.

In episode 3, the case was going to trial. Mr. Ray’s lawyers were confident of an acquital. The government was not going to have that. For some reason, Mr. Ray fired his first lawyer. A gentleman named Percy Foreman took over. Soon Mr. Ray entered a guilty plea.

In the show, people talk about how worthless Percy Foreman was. I was curious if Mr. Foreman was still alive, so I googled him. A legal document turned up. JB Stoner was lawyer number three. Mr. Stoner was an extreme racist, even by Georgia standards. He ran for Governor in 1970, and made a spectacle of himself. At one point, Mr. Stoner sued a TV station, to allow an ad with the n-word.

There are many stories that could be told about JB Stoner. The candidates were speaking at the Governor’s Honors program. Mr. Stoner was going through his routine, when three students starting walking up the aisle. A young black man, with a blonde on each arm, walked up the aisle to the front of the hall. The man who won the Governor’s race, Jimmy Carter, was laughing so hard that tears came out of his eyes. Pictures today are from The Library of Congress.

Aaron Long

Shootings at 3 Georgia spas leave 8 dead; Man in custody blames ‘addiction to sex’ Most of you are familiar with the basics. Aaron Long is a super Baptist 21 y.o. He felt that his sexual urges were a problem. Mr. Long got kicked out of his parents house, and went to a gun store. He bought a 9mm handgun, and went to a massage parlor on Highway 92. Four people were killed: two Asian women, a white woman, and a white man. This is a repost.

Mr. Long went to Piedmont Road in Atlanta, just up the hill from the scene of the I85 fire. Soon, four Asian women died, in the two massage parlors where they worked. Mr. Long took off down I75. His parents called police, to tell them about a tracking device on his vehicle. The authorities caught him in Crisp County. “Yesterday was a really bad day for him and this is what he did.”

Since six of the eight victims were Asian women, the crime was immediately assumed to be a racism motivated hate crime. Mr. Long was a twice baptized super Christian, who had severe sexual anxiety issues. The massage parlors are widely assumed to be whorehouses. To the facebook mob, this is not as important as the nationality of his victims.

Mr. Long spent a few months in Maverick Recovery, a residential, 12 step based treatment facility in Roswell GA. Mr. Long was treated for “sex addiction.” One can only imagine the things his counselors told him, to go along with the teachings of his family and church.

Did Mr. Long have same sex attractions that troubled him? Why was he unable to find a romantic partner, or even a friend with benefits? Did he have some physical limitations? Or, did he feel anger at himself for having these urges, and at those who provided an outlet? These are very powerful emotions. Mr. Long would not be the first man to kill because of sexual anxiety.

This is coming at a time of increased attacks on Asians, particularly in California and New York. Most of the reports do not specify the race of the attackers. In at least three videotaped attacks (one, two, three) the perps were black.

One high profile case is the attack on 84 y.o. Vicha Ratanapkadee, by 19 y.o. Antoine Watson. The video of the incident has been widely seen. A curious thread on twitter turned up.

@DionLimTV “WARNING: this video is hard to watch. Another shocking attack in Oakland’s Chinatown. 8th and Harrison Streets. Outside the Asian Resource Center. 20+ robbery/assault incidents in the neighborhood according to the Chinatown Chamber president.” @danieldaekim “The skyrocketing number of hate crimes against Asian Americans continues to grow, despite our repeated pleas for help. The crimes ignored and even excused. Remember Vincent Chin. #EnoughisEnough. @danielwuyanzu & I are offering a $25,000 reward.”

@but_im_kim_tran“Listen, if you don’t understand why it’s problematic to offer 25k for information about a Black man in Oakland, I need you to stay off all the goddamned panels.” @but_im_kim_tran “This is the moment we need to ask ourselves, to what end? If it was for an accountability process, okay, but I highly doubt that. Lastly, this looks a lot like a bounty on a Black person funded by Asian American celebrities. I have major, major doubts.” Pictures today are from The Library of Congress.

UPDATE – Aaron Long pled guilty to the Cherokee County charges on August 27, 2021. His sentence was Life w/o Parole. Mr. Long is awaiting trial for the Atlanta shootings. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis intends to seek the death penalty. … There is an unconfirmed rumor that Mr. Long’s family spent over $50,000 to send him to a residential rehab facility for sex addiction.

WSB

Posted in Georgia History, GSU photo archive by chamblee54 on March 16, 2022

WSB radio is 100 years old. The 95.5 FM simulcast is much younger. On March 15, 1922, The Atlanta Journal received a telegram authorizing it to broadcast weather bulletins. The telegram instructed the station to use the call letters WSB. (Later, a station in Nashville was named WSM.) While the letters were later said to stand for Welcome South Brother (as well as World Series Baseball, and We’re So Boring), they appear to have been randomly assigned at first.

WSB is a 50,000 watt, clear channel station. At night, it can be heard for hundreds of miles around. It’s transmission tower is on LaVista Road, across the street from Northlake Mall. In the seventies, you could hear broadcasts on pay phones in the area.

WSB was owned by the Atlanta Journal, and had it’s first studio in their building downtown. The radio station moved to the Biltmore Hotel when it opened in 1926. In 1926, WSB joined the NBC radio network. (Station logs show a broadcast of the inaugural NBC broadcast in November, 1926.) In 1939, the Journal, and WSB, were sold to James Middleton Cox, who founded Cox Enterprises. In 1950, Mr. Cox bought the Atlanta Constitution.

The thirties and forties were the glory days for radio. In the fifties, television started to move in. WSB-TV started to broadcast on Channel 2. A studio known as “White Columns on Peachtree” was built in 1955, and was the home WSB, radio and TV.

When PG was old enough to listen, WSB had a format which is no longer in use. It played “middle of the road” music, and had lots of news broadcasting. As FM radio began to dominate music broadcasting, (including WSB FM), the venerable AM station evolved (devolved) into a news-talk format. This is what you hear today.

HT to Peach Pundit. This is a repost, with pictures from “The Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library” and WSB.

π Day

Posted in GSU photo archive, Holidays by chamblee54 on March 14, 2022

LBCB007-116az

LBCB012-138az

Today is 3-14. It is a saturday, and 314 are the first three digits of pi (affectionately known as π ). It is a math thing, the number you multiply a diameter by to get the circumference. When your grammar school math teacher told you about π, she probably used 3.14, or 3 1/7. (PG went to school when Hewlett and Packard were still in the garage.)

You might also have heard the formula for the area of a circle, the racy π r squared . This means that you multiply π by the radius (half the diameter, a line from the border to the center point), and then multiply the whole contraption by the radius again. The formula has a funny sound to it. Pie are not square, cornbread is square, pie are round. Like Sly Stone says, all the squares go home.

According to wikipedia, π seems to have been known as early as 1900 b.c. The pyramids of Egypt have a π based feature. The Greek letter π is the first letter of the Greek word περίμετρος (perimeter) . This was determined OTP.

The pyramid- π function is fairly simple. The total length of the four sides, at the base, will be the same as the height of the pyramid, times two, times π. PG likes to make model pyramids. They are 6″ tall, and the base sides are 9 3/8″. The combination of these four sides is 37 1/2″. If you multiply 6x2x3.14, you get 37.68″ The .18″ is because of a measuring error.

A lady named Eve Astrid Andersson has a page of her website dedicated to π. The only trivia question that PG understood was the first one…1. What is the formal definition of pi? …the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter // 3.14159 // the radius of a unit circle // the surface area of a sphere of diameter 22/7 // a delicious dessert, especially if it contains cherries.

There is the football cheer from M.I.T. ” Cosine, secant, tangent, sine 3.14159 // Integral, radical, u dv, slipstick, slide rule, MIT!”

In 1998 a movie titled π was released. It caused brain damage in 3.14% of those who saw it. Perhaps it is not a coincidence that 1998 = 666 x 3.

π has been calculated to over five million digits. This is a repost, with pictures from “The Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library”.

Have you ever wondered why your ancestors owned other human beings? How can you justify something this cruel? In an NPR interview to promote a new book, 1861: The Civil War Awakening, Adam Goodheart has an answer. This is a repost.
It was economics.
“But I think we think of it differently when we realize that the value of slave property, some $4 billion, enormous amount of money in 1861, represented actually more money than the value of all of the industry and all of the railroads in the entire United States combined. So for Southern planters to simply one day liberate all of that property would have been like asking people today to simply overnight give up their stock portfolios, give up their IRAs.”
Mr. Goodheart compares it to the situation today with fossil fuels.
“many of us recognize that in burning fossil fuels we’re doing something terrible for the planet, we’re doing something terrible for future generations. And yet in order to give this up would mean sort of unraveling so much of the fabric of our daily lives, sacrificing so much, becoming these sort of radical eccentrics riding bicycles everywhere, that we continue somewhat guiltily to participate in the system. And that’s something that I use as a comparison to slavery, that many Americans in the North, and even I believe sort of secretly in the South, felt a sense of guilt, felt a sense of shame, that knew that the slave system was wrong but were simply addicted to slavery and couldn’t give it up. “
When the economic pressure is there, people will find a way to justify their actions. Slavery was justified in a number of ways. Today, there are people who deny the ill effects of using fossil fuels, and they have an eager audience. The payback for the environmental horror is in the future. This is similar to the way people today are paying … with racial turmoil … for slavery.

Only A Part, Not The Whole

Posted in Library of Congress, Undogegorized by chamblee54 on March 12, 2022

It was a turning point. I had pictures of fire hydrants, taken around my neighborhood. I was going to use them as the backgrounds for a graphic poem. A series of tests images was produced, while listening to Bret Easton Ellis and Matthew Specktor. I would work on the test images until after the show, and decide then which formula to use.

A problem arose when the time came. I had five basic styles, and all were good. Oblique Strategies might have the answer. The OS is “Only a part, not the whole.” This told me to go with the black and white fire hydrants. An important part of the pictures is color. After choosing this option, the rest of the project went quickly. The only thing missing is background entertainment.

Dan Carlin has a new episode of hardcore history. I now have five hours of entertainment. At two minutes in, I see a quote that I want to save. “history is present politics projected on to the past.”

Ask people to work against their better judgement. It is now friday. I am 9146 seconds into the HH show, Human Resources. It is about the atlantic slave trade, that produced the African-American population we have today. It is not easy to listen to. This slave trade featured cruelty on a scale that cannot be comprehended. To many, better judgement means to consume another unit of entertainment. Pictures today are from The Library of Congress.
