Failed State Index
Fund For Peace is about to unveil The Failed States Index 2013. FFP takes 12 indicators, mixes them up with a secret formula, and produces a list of 178 countries. The worst country, with the 001 rank, is Somalia. 178 is Finland.
A blog called Musings On Iraq brought the FSI to the attention of PG. The country between the rivers is 011 this year, despite, or because of, the heavy American investment there. MOI does not deny the problems in Iraq, but questions the way FFP keeps score. When you start looking at the twelve indicators, compare the scores over the last few years, you eyes might start to glaze over.
“The most glaring scores however were for group grievances and security apparatus that went from 9.7 to 10.0 and 9.9 to 10.0 respectively. Obviously the insurgency is taking off again, but 10.0 was the score Iraq received when it was still in a civil war in 2007. Yes, violence is up, but it’s nowhere near the level it was at during the sectarian conflict when several thousands were ending up dead each month, the government largely shut down, and daily life was completely disrupted.”
The problems in ranking Iraq highlight some of the problems with a study like this. It is tough to really know what is going on across town, much less across the world. MOI describes Iraq in 2007 as a country in collapse. This was when Fox News told America that we were winning the war.
The bottom ten is dominated by Africa. The first Asian state to appear is 007 Afghanistan, another state with an intense American investment. 008 is Haiti, 011 is Iraq, and 013 is Pakistan. The rest of the bottom 20 is African.
The top ten is dominated by Scandinavia. 173 New Zealand is the top non European nation, with 169 Australia rounding out the top ten. The other eight top tens are European, with 170 Ireland ten spots ahead of 160 Great Britain. England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are considered as one unit.
The way that 160 Great Britain was judged, as one unit, probably affected the score of that state. Another state like that is 067 Israel/West Bank. This apparently includes Gaza. The troubles in the Arab parts counterbalance the good life in the Jewish state.
We are in paragraph eight, and still have not discussed 159 United States. 168 Canada and 097 Mexico round out NAFTA land. The top Asian state is 158 Singapore, 152 Chile tops South America, and 121 Botswana is on top of continental Africa.
According to the Guardian, “The organisation that produces the index, the Fund for Peace, is the kind of outfit John le Carré thinks we should all be having nightmares about. Its director, JJ Messner (who puts together the list), is a former lobbyist for the private military industry. … The main reason is that the concept of the failed state has never existed outside a programme for western intervention. It has always been a way of constructing a rationale for imposing US interests on less powerful nations.”

Founding Babydaddies
People often try to justify their opinions by saying that the “founding fathers” agree with them. They often are guilty of selective use of history. A good place to start would be to define what we mean by the phrase founding fathers.
The FF word was not used before 1916. A senator from Ohio named Warren Harding used the phrase in the keynote address of the 1916 Republican convention. Mr. Harding was elected President in 1920, and is regarded as perhaps the most corrupt man to ever hold the office.
There are two groups of men who could be considered the founding fathers. (The fathers part is correct. Both groups are 100% white male.) The Continental Congress issued the Declaration of Independence, which cut the ties to England. Eleven years later, the Constitutional Convention wrote the Constitution that governs America today. While the Continental Congress was braver, the Constitution is the document that tells our government how to function. For the purposes of this feature, the men of the Constitutional Convention are the founding fathers.
Before moving on, we should remember eight men who signed the Declaration of Independence, and later attended the Constitutional Convention. Both documents were signed by George Clymer, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Morris, George Read, Roger Sherman, and James Wilson. George Wythe left the Convention without signing the new document. Elbridge Gerry (the namesake of gerrymandering) refused to sign the Constitution because it did not have a Bill of Rights.
The original topic of this discussion was about whether the founding fathers owned slaves. Many people wonder about this. If you go to google, and type in “did the founding fathers”, the first four answers are owned slaves, believed in G-d, have a death wish, and smoke weed.
The answer, to the obvious question, is an obvious answer. Yes, many of the founding fathers owned slaves. A name by name rundown of the 39 signatories of the Constitution was not done for this blogpost. There is this revealing comment at wiki answers about the prevalence of slave ownership. “John Adams, his second cousin Samuel Adams, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Paine were the only men who are traditionally known as founding fathers who did not own slaves.
Benjamin Franklin was indeed a founder of the Abolitionist Society, but he owned two slaves, named King and George. Franklin’s newspaper, the Pennsylvania Gazette routinely ran ads for sale or purchase of slaves.
Patrick Henry is another founding father who owned slaves, although his speeches would make one think otherwise. Despite his “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech, he had up to 70 slaves at a time. He did apologize from time to time. He knew it was wrong, he was accountable to his God, and bemoaned the “general inconvenience of living without them.”
Patrick Henry was a star of the Revolution, but not present at the Constitutional Convention. The author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson, was in Europe during the convention. Mr. Jefferson not only owned slaves, he took one to be his mistress, and kidsmama.
One of the more controversial features of the Constitution is the 3/5 rule. Here are the original words “Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.” In other words, a slave was only considered to be 60% of a person.
That seems rather harsh. The truth is, it was a compromise. The agricultural southern states did not want to give up their slaves. The northern states did not want to give up Congressional representation. This was the first of many compromises made about slavery, ending with the War between the States. This webpage goes into more detail about the nature of slavery.
The research for this feature turned up a rather cynical document called The myth of the “Founding Fathers” . It is written by Adolph Nixon. He asks : “most rational persons realize that such political mythology is sheer nonsense, but it begs the question, who were the Founding Fathers and what makes them so great that they’re wiser than you are?”
Mr. Nixon reviews the 39 white men who signed the Constitution. He does not follow the rule, if you can’t say anything nice about someone, then don’t say anything at all. Of the 39, 12 were specified as slave owners, with many tagged as “slave breeders”.
The Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, have served America well. However it was intended, it was written so that it could be amended, and to grow with the young republic. It has on occasion been ignored (when was the last time Congress declared war?). However fine a document it is, it was created by men. These were men of their time, who could not have foreseen the changes that America has gone through. Those who talk the most about the founding fathers know the least about them.

TMI Trayvon Martin Incident
There is a graphic floating around the intercom about Trayvon Martin. It makes a few claims about the young man. In the age of Google, this might not be a smart move.
Trayvon Martin ~ Was an honor student with a 3.7 GPA ~ Was accepted into college on a full ride ~ Was a volunteer of over 600 service hours ~ Was a devoted member of his church ~ Was a loyal friend and a loving son ~ Was an innocent boy. But black skin, Skittles, and a hoodie deemed him a “threat to the community” RETWEET to spread Trayvon’s REAL story RETWEET for justice R.I.P.
PG asked Mr. Google what he knew about this. The six sentences in the first part were checked out. None of them have any evidence to back them up. The claim about being an honor student is especially amusing, in light of the multiple suspensions that Mr. Martin had.
This is the silly season in the media. George Zimmerman is on trial. The behavior of Trayvon Martin may, or may not, be a factor in the case. This behavior does not justify his shooting. However, when people put easily refuted nonsense on the internet, it calls attention to the shortcomings of Trayvon Martin. The google search, for this feature, turned up stories that made Trayvon Martin look very bad. Perhaps the best thing to do at this point is be quiet, and let the jury hear the case. Justice is not a popularity contest.
If you want to wallow in this a bit more, you can take a test, How much do you know about the Trayvon Martin case? Two of the questions are: 1. Hundreds of protests broke out across the country after the Feb. 26 shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon in a Florida gated community. Where was the first ‘Million-hoodie march’ held? 11. Which NBA star tweeted a picture of his entire team wearing hoodies, with their heads bowed and hands in their pockets in honor of Trayvon? (Spell check suggestions for hoodies: goodies, foodies, woodies, hoodoos)

Pimping The Flag
PG looked in the front yard, and saw a small flag by the driveway. It had been left, with the business card of a realtor attached to the staff. PG was not pleased. He walked to the end of the driveway, looked north, and saw a young lady placing flags in front yards.
The same thing happened in July of 2012. PG sent an email to the offending realtor, and did not receive a reply. In May of 2013, PG found one of last years flags in a garbage can. It had been worn down by the elements. The red, white, and blue had been reduced to pink, gray, and lavender.
The offending flag was snatched out of the ground. PG walked north, and gave it back to the realtor. This is not an appropriate use of the flag. The realtor said she would be coming back to gather up any flags that fell to the ground. Whether or not this will happen remains to be seen.
The flag code is explicit on this issue. The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.
Prescription For Alcoholics
There is an image on facebook. It is a prescription, dated February 1937. The note reads: Rx for alcoholics 1. Trust G-d 2. Clean house 3. Help others.
The prescription is signed by R.H. Smith, MD. Diseases Of The Rectum. Reg. No. 3089… 810 Second National Bldg., Akron, Ohio… HEmlock 8523 The Collins Drug Co., Dispensing Chemists, 147 South Main St., Akron, Ohio
“Dr. Bob” is one of the Seven Pioneers of Alcoholics Anonymous. “Robert H. Smith, M.D., “ Dr. Bob” to his innumerable friends, physician and surgeon, and cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous.” In descriptions of the other pioneers, you see the phrase “Bill and Dr. Bob”. Dr. Bob’s last words to Bill W were: “Remember Bill, let’s not louse this thing up. Let’s keep it simple”
PG is a retired drunk. He has never attended an AA meeting. From what he has heard, the AA approach is crude. There is a heavy emphasis on semantics, and clever slogans. AA works for some people. It is not for everyone. *Insert bumper sticker slogan here ____.*
The six word “prescription” would seem to be sound advice. Rule number one … Trust G-d … might be a problem for Jesus worshipers. That so called religion is, in truth, a scheme for life after death. Maybe if Christians would trust G-d to take care of them after death, and quit making noise about “salvation”, the world would be a better place. It would certainly be more quiet.
Patriotism For Skeptics
This is a double repost from July 2008. It was repeated in 2012. They were originally posted in a red, white, and blue font. This is one mistake which will not be repeated, at least not today.
Both features are on the theme of patriotism for skeptics. America has given me a good life, and I appreciate this. The problem is crooks and liars who make patriotic noise while robbing you blind. They think that waving the flag will distract you from their thievery, and often they are right.
These features were originally posted sixty months ago. A few things have happened in that time. The economy has gone from bad to horrific. Lots of carbon dioxide has been pumped into the atmosphere, which may not affect us for a while, but probably will. The Gulf of Mexico has been poisoned. Israel killed women and children in Gaza, and is threatening to do the same in Iran. Meanwhile, Iran had a crooked election, and the people fought back. This is similar to what is going on in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, and Syria.
The US dollar, with all its problems, is still the preferred currency of the world. There was speculation a while back that the Euro would replace the dollar in this role. The Euro is in worse shape than the dollar these days. All is not hopeless.
The U S of A elected a dark skinned man POTUS. Many said that race relations would be different, but that has not worked out very well. The combat troops were withdrawn from Iraq, but Babylon is still in a world of hurt. The new POTUS discovered the wonders of robomurder eight time zones away, and has wasted many women and children. Nuclear armed Pakistan gets more edgy every day. Maybe the best thing to do is live in the past, and enjoy some repeat posts. Pictures are from The Library of Congress. These images are Union Soldiers from the War Between The States.
The following is a repost . It was originally published in a red, white, and blue font. As a service to the readers, today’s posting will be in green. Yellowdoggrannie is going strong, and has not forgiven W.
I read an item at yellowdoggrannie’s place this morning. It was a link to a video about the writing of the Star Spangled Banner. (The link does not work anymore. The video is probably available somewhere.) YDG said it made her cry. It set off my BS detector. I am not a history buff. I do know that the War of 1812 was not the most glorious part of American History.
In 1812, Napoleon was on a rampage, but about to screw up. He invaded Russia on June 24, just six days after the U.S. Congress gave approval to “Mr. Madison’s War”. According to St. Wikipedia, the declaration passed by the smallest margin of any war declaration in American History.
The War was caused by several things. The British were “impressing” sailors for duty in their Navy. Among the deserters and British subjects were some Americans. The British were supporting the Native Americans who were fighting the white man. There was also some talk (in Washington) about annexing territory in Canada, either to keep, or to use as a bargaining chip with the British.
On the East side of the Atlantic, England had a change of government at this time, towards a regime that wanted peace with America. This being the early nineteenth century, word of this development did not make it to America in time to stop the War.
The War went on for a couple of years. It distracted the British from fighting Napoleon, and was a strain on the young American republic. In the Summer of 1814, negotiations were underway to end the conflict. The British launched a few military campaigns to put pressure on the U.S.A. Washington D.C. was captured and burned. The next move was the capture of Baltimore.
This is where the video begins its tale. Where the video said hundreds of British ships, Wikipedia says 19. An attorney, Francis Scott Key, was negotiating the release of an American POW. He secured his release, but they could not leave until the bombardment of Fort McHenry was complete. Here is an account of the story:At Fort McHenry, some 1,000 soldiers under the command of Major George Armistead awaited the British naval bombardment…. The attack began in the evening of September 13, as the British fleet of some nineteen ships began pounding the fort with Congreve rockets (from rocket vessel HMS Erebus) and mortar shells (from bomb vessels HMS Terror, HMS Volcano, HMS Meteor, HMS Devastation, and HMS Aetna). After an initial exchange of fire, the British fleet withdrew to just beyond the range of Fort McHenry’s cannons and continued to bombard the American redoubts for the next 25 hours.Although 1,500 to 1,800 cannonballs were launched at the fort, damage was minimal.
After nightfall, Cochrane ordered a landing to be made by medium boats to the shore just west of the fort, away from the harbor opening on which the fort’s defense was concentrated….Operating in darkness and in foul weather, the diversionary attack failed. On the morning of September 14, the 30 ft (9.1 m) × 42 ft oversized American flag, which had been made a few months before by local flagmaker Mary Pickersgill and her 13 year old daughter, flew over Fort McHenry, and Cochrane and Brooke knew that victory had eluded them
Mr. Key saw the flag the next day. He wrote a poem to the tune of a British drinking song, “To Anacreon in Heaven”. The song was made the National Anthem in 1931, and has been (badly) sung ever since. Two extra words, “Play Ball”, were added later.
On September 24, the Treaty of Ghent ended the conflict. The verdict was “status quo ante bellum”. In other words, nothing was changed by the death of those men. The war was, in effect, over when the Battle of Baltimore was fought. The word of the treaty did not reach America for a few weeks. (The Battle of New Orleans was fought after the end of the War.)
The video said the Flag at Fort McHenry was held up through the night by men, many of whom died. This might be true. It is also true that the negotiations were about to yield fruit. It would take a few weeks for word of the Battle of Baltimore to reach Europe, at which point the War was already over. Status Quo Ante Bellum.
Patriotism is one of the games that almost everyone plays. The rules seem to vary.
In 1967, JSM was flying planes in Nam, I was in the eighth grade, and BHO was in the first grade. He was in Hawaii, which might have been where JSM went for R&R if Hanoi did not have other ideas. America was about to hit a turning point about the Vietnam War. At first people were supportive, albeit without much enthusiasm. Opposition started to arise, and was frequently confused with treason. As the war dragged on, the homefront began to see things differently.
To this reporter, many of the patriots of 1967 were the ones who opposed the war. The conflict in Indochina was to cause many problems for the United States. Eventually, Richard Nixon got a fig leaf treaty that he called Peace with Honor. The early opposition was heard, but not after losing more than fifty eight thousand fine men.
That is the first way to be a patriot…to keep an eye on the government, and speak out in opposition when it is needed. Another way is to keep the United States strong and healthy. One way to do this is work hard and pay taxes. Now, the conservative windbags whine loudly about paying taxes. They want to pay for the current war by cutting taxes to make the economy grow. If we had no taxes at all the economy would grow even more.
The war in Babylon was an experiment in war without sacrifice. There was a tax cut when it was apparent we were planning an invasion. The national debt has gone out of control, and the federal reserve bank has cut the interest rates. The result is that the dollar is not worth as much as it once was. The oil market is based on the dollar. Oil is just as valuable as ever. The dollar is not, and it takes more dollars to buy a barrel of oil. This is an important factor in the rise of gas prices.
The way to keep America strong is to follow the three basic rules of the workplace: show up, stay awake, don’t kill anyone The citizens of the United States are a remarkable group of people. One way to be a patriot is to show respect for these people, and for yourself.
Another way to help America is to quit consuming so much. If we drove smarter, we would not need as much gasoline. We would not be so big if we didn’t eat as much. Maybe you can put a sweater on in the winter instead of turning up the thermostat. We are heading in this direction, but have a way to go.
Much of what you hear and read is not true. The so called conservatives are just as guilty as the so called mainstream media. Think for yourself. The freedom to think is a part of America that you are sometimes discouraged from exercising, but it is important.
This is a dangerous world, and we have a military to keep them away from our borders. We are also involved in a tough war of our own choosing. It is to be hoped that our next President will find an acceptable conclusion to this conflict.
Meanwhile, this is the fourth of july. It is a day to enjoy the good life we have here. America is a fine country. It has given me a good life. While I am not blind to the problems, there is no where else I would rather be. 2013 UPDATE The economy is marginally better today, although many people have not benefited. The American troops are out of Iraq, and that country is having problems. BHO was reelected in 2012, despite the best efforts of the Republican party. Race relations in America are no better, and in some ways worse. Some things have changed, some remain the same.
Picture 065
The other day this blog published a feature, Jury. There was a collection of photographs, taken at the Brookhaven Bolt 5k, May 18, 2013. The pictures have a look. This post is about how to get that look. If you see something that you already know, then skim past that part.
Image a is the original. It is reduced to 720 pixels wide. This is the size of the columns, and the width that pictures are processed to at Chamblee54. The original is 3264×2448. The camera is a Nikon COOLPIX L26, It was taken at 8:15 am. This is towards the start of the race. All the participants are running at this point. After a few minutes, you start to have people walking, some with strollers.
The actions taken to get this look use basic functions of GIMP. Most of these tools have keyboard shortcuts at Chamblee54, which is a great convenience. The keyboard shortcut, used in the original version of the program, will be used here, to tell you how to get to these tools.
Image b is the cropped original. The section to be used is cropped to the golden rectangle, or 161:100. This section is reduced to 720×447. Open the Rectangle (R) tool. In the options menu, go to Fixed. Enter 161:100. Check the box next to the word Fixed. Draw a rectangle around the section that you want to select. Open Crop to Selection (alt+I, C). To reduce the selection (from roughly 1200×750), hit Scale Image, (alt+I, S). In the Width field, enter 720. Click on Scale (alt+S.) Hit 1 to bring the image to 100%. You might have to increase the size of the window to see the entire image. You do this by placing the mouse on the corner of the window, and dragging the corner away from the window.
Image c is the first step in the formula. You apply a Gaussian Blur (alt+R, B, G). In the Horizontal field, enter 22. Click OK.
Image d is the key to getting this look. Open Fade Gaussian Blur(alt+E, F). Click on the triangle next to Mode, and a menu will drop down. Choose Darken only. Click Fade (alt+F.) This is a good look already, and you might want to call this complete. For the purposes of today’s demonstration, we will work on this image a bit more.
The next two steps involve the levels. This is basically the lightness and darkness. Image e is the picture after you use the Levels tool (alt+C, L). Go to where it says All Channels, and hit Auto. Click OK.
Image f involves the use of the Curves tool. This tool allows you to make part of the picture lighter, and part of it darker. Open Curves (alt+C, C). The picture below image f shows the Curves tool. The image on the left is the Curves tool when you open it. The image on the right is the Curves tool as it was adjusted for this image. The left side of the slanted line controls the dark parts of the image, and the right side controls the light parts. In this image, the dark parts were made lighter, and the light parts were made an equal amount darker. Click OK.
Image g is where the colors are saturated. Open Hue-Saturation(alt+C, S). In the Adjust Selected Color section, (leave it on Master), slide Saturation to the right as far as you need to. Saturating the colors will sometimes turn white people’s skin into an unappealing red shade. To offset this, go to the field beside the Hue slider, and enter 6. Click OK.
Image h is the final version of this picture. Open Color Balance (alt+C, B). For this image, in Select Range to Adjust, choose Shadows. In the Adjust Color Levels, under Cyan-Red enter 10, under Magenta-Green 0, and Yellow-Blue -20. Click OK. Open Save As (ctrl+shift+S), give it a name, click OK. You are finished.
Spelling Bee And Dee
There is a post to be considered, The Seven Deadly Spelling Sins. The first sentence should send any sane person running… “Because I am a writing teacher and a former editor, I am constantly exposed to the most egregious mistakes in writing, grammar, and spelling.” PG is not a sane person. Here is the post, with supplemental comments for your reading pleasure.
1. There, Their, and They’re These are three different words, and they are not interchangeable. “There” refers to a place and is the opposite of “here.” “Their” refers to ownership of something. “They’re” is a contraction that means “they are,” as in: They are having a spelling party.
This is what is known as a homophone. You might have thought that was a communications device in midtown. If you think about it a bit, you realize that one is possessive, one is a place, and one is a clumsy third person plural verb. They’re going to take their ice cream and go there with it.
2. To and Too “To” is the beginning of any infinitive form of a verb: to run, to be, to smile, to write, to blog. Taking foreign language classes is the best way to drive this one home. It is also a preposition. “Too” means “also” or “in addition to.” It can also mean “in excess,” as in: There are too many shoes in my closet. (Well, that’s simply not possible, but you get the idea.)
This forgets two, which is a number, but the spelling is so different that usually the distinction is made. Just like spelling, as in bee, is different from Aaron Spelling. He was the father of Tori Spelling, and a Hollywood producer. Aaron Spelling made lots of money, built the biggest house in California, and was married to Morticia Addams.
3. You’re and Your “You’re” is a contraction form of “you are.” “Your” again refers to ownership.
Words like this are a problem with spell check. If the word is spelled conventionally, it will not set off the device. This also happens when you mean to say to, but type do instead. This is a normal word, and spell check will not know the difference.
4. Judgment This word never ever (in the United States) has an “e” in the middle.
Words like this are pronounced in different ways by white people and black people. White people say “munt”, and accent the first syllable. Black people say “mint”, and accent the second syllable. The mint sounds like a brand of gum, like spearmint or double mint. Did you know that the doublemint twins have had substance abuse issues? They are currently in a twenty four step program.
5. Definitely I don’t know why, but some 90 percent of my students have difficulty spelling this word. There is it, in black and white. Memorize it. I have seen it misspelled as: Defiantly, Definately, Definetley, Definitly And so on. I’m sure there are numerous variations to a bad spelling.
PG is part of the ninety percent here. This is a toughie. Maybe if you break it down into parts, it will make sense. De Finite Ly. De is pronounced duh, which is smart. Finite means only so many, all there is and there ain’t no more. Ly is one of those suffixes that gets tacked onto everything.
6. Its and It’s Again, we have a contraction. The contraction means that two words have been combined, so “it’s” means “it is.” Now, the tricky part is the fact that possession usually uses an apostrophe. However, because this apostrophe is already taken for “it is,” “its” refers to possession.
This is one of those things that make you think English was invented by a race of drunks who call soccer football. To any reasonable person, a word meaning possession should have an apostrophe and s. Here, it’s means it is. Sometimes, the best thing to do is play along and don’t wonder why things are so screwed up. It is usually easier.
7. Lightning This one is my personal pet peeve. This refers to that giant flash of light in the sky that usually occurs during a rainstorm and is always followed by thunder. However, I see many people spell it as “lightening,” which can refer to making something lighter, in color or weight. However, it also means the dropping of the baby before a woman gives birth, and that’s what I always think of. So, when people write on Facebook, “The lightening was fantastic last night,” I can’t help but wonder if they are relieved to have finally given birth.
PG was going to end with a comment about religion, but was afraid of being hit by lightning. Pictures are from The Library of Congress. This is a repost.
Cruise Control In The Rain
There is a bit of facebook “wisdom” floating around. This time, most of the the internet skeptics seem to think it is the truth. Lets begin with the message:
A 36 year old female had an accident several weeks ago. It was raining, though not excessively when her car suddenly began to hydro-planeand literally flew through the air. She was not seriously injured but very stunned at the sudden occurrence! When she explained to the Police Officer what had happened, he told her something that every driver should know – NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON. She thought she was being cautious by setting the cruise control and maintaining a safe consistent speed in the rain…. But the Police Officer told her that if the cruise control is on,your car will begin to hydro-plane when the tyres lose contact with the road, and your car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed making you take off like an aeroplane. She told the Officer that was exactly what had occurred. The Officer said this warning should be listed, on the driver’s seat sun-visor – NEVER USE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE ROAD IS WET OR ICY, Along with the airbag warning. We tell our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a safe speed – but we don’t tell them to use the cruise control only when the road is dry.
This message makes intuitive sense. Unfortunately, a lot of other bits of internet wisdom sound good at first, but turn out to be frauds. There is no way to confirm the story of the “36 year old female.” When you are repeatedly lied to, your instinct is to not believe what you are told. In this case, if you google the key phrase, you will find abundant confirmation.
Snopes has numerous critics. In this case, the story is confirmed, and a link supplied to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia. “Turn off the cruise control: Wet roads can cause wheels to spin and lose control. The only way to stop wheels from spinning and maintain control is to immediately reduce power. An activated cruise control system applies continuous power, keeping the wheels spinning. By the time you disengage the cruise control it may be too late – you may have already lost control.”
Hoax Slayer says the story is true, but “misleading and overly alarmist.” They say the number one problem here is the slower reaction times with cruise control. People typically move the right foot away from the control pedals when CC is used. If there is an emergency, you will react a split second later. HS has a link to Car Point Australia, which makes this point: “This is the key that makes a nonsense of the email. Modern cars take their speedo reading from the driveshaft or transmission. This means the cruise control bases its responses on the speed of the driven wheels, not the car itself. This is an important distinction and fail safe position. If the driven wheels skid because they lose grip, the spinning wheels will cause the speedo to show a higher reading which will force the cruise control to release the throttle faster than most drivers. Regardless of whether the car itself slows down or speeds up, the cruise control will always reduce the throttle no matter what until the driven wheels slow down back to the pre-set speed. If the wheels continue to slip under this scenario, this will always leave the car traveling more slowly relative to the road, not faster as described in the email. “
Truth or fiction and urban legends agree with snopes that this is a real problem. The only dissenting voice seen so far is museum of hoaxes. They give a link to Australia’s Royal Automobile Association, which doesn’t think it is a problem. ” “Should the car’s tyres break traction with the road, such as in an aquaplane situation, the increase in wheel speed would be sensed and the cruise control system would then reduce the amount of throttle and maintain the set speed. Additionally, cruise control systems are deactivated as soon as the brake is applied. As braking is usually an automatic reaction in most emergency situations, the scenario of cruise control causing an increase in vehicle speed is highly unlikely.” Maybe it is ok in the southern hemisphere, but a problem north of the equator.
Baton Bob

A few years ago, a man started to twirl a baton around Atlanta. He wears eye catching outfits, traditionally intended for females. His handle is Baton Bob. Yesterday, BB went out to celebrate the Supreme Court decisions on DOMA, and Proposition 8. He went to Colony Square, where apparently his act is not appreciated. He was asked to leave, became verbally abusive, and was arrested. Here is the police report.
Baton Bob is African American. So is the arresting officer, and the two security guards. This matter might not be about race. Further, it seems as though BB has had problems with the management at Colony Square before. A security guard, on private property, has a right to tell a man not to come in to the food court and blow a whistle.
Baton Bob does not appreciate those who don’t enjoy his act. He does not have a problem with cussing out those who get in his way. Apparently, this was a problem when he was in St. Louis. Could it be that Baton Bob has gotten too big for his Tutu?
