In 1920, a former journalist named Warren Harding ran for President. The slogan of his campaign was “A return to normalcy”. Mr. Harding, who had previously coined the phrase “founding fathers”, won the election. Many consider Warren Harding to be a very bad POTUS.

Go ahead 93 years, and look at facebook. There is an eye catching graphic. “IF YOU CAN’T EXPLAIN IT TO A SIX YEAR OLD, YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND IT YOURSELF.” ALBERT EINSTEIN WHAT IS NORMALCY IN AN ABNORMAL SOCIETY?

Wikiquotes says this quote is “misattributed”. Credit/blame is given to several other people. The explainee is sometimes said to be your grandmother, or a barmaid. There is an account of Dr. Einstein saying something similar in a conversation. In a court of law, this is considered hearsay.

Is this normalcy? To publish beautiful images, based on dubious quote? Even if a famous person did say it, does crediting a more famous person make it more true? Maybe the whole thing is just another example of a beautiful medium, with no message. Only if your grandmother is a six year old barmaid.

This visit to Zuckerland is interrupted by a flash and a beep. There is a message in the inbox. You read it, and type a reply. When you hit the send button, you see this: ” _____ is using an app to chat. To message ____, you need to change your settings to let friends who use apps see if you’re online. Would you like to allow friends using other apps to see your online state?”

Moving along, a friend is “sharing” a bit of text. After a couple of sentences, PG realizes that he has seen this text before. It is about how 545 people made life tough for 300 million. If you absolutely have to read the latest version, here it is. It is too late to sign the petition.

Charley Reese was a writer for the Orlando Sentinel. He wrote a column in 1984 that started it all. (Oldtimers might recall when 1984 was in the far off future, when Big Brother ran everything.) The column was revised in 1995, in time for the internet to introduce it to normalcy. Mr. Reese retired from the Sentinel in 2001, and wrote a nationally syndicated column for King Features until 2008.

Health issues are cited in the last column as a reason for retiring. Five years later, Mr. Reese is still with us. The last column says that the election of a black man as POTUS is a good thing. This thought might induce apoplexy in many who share the facebook version of the last column.

The Orlando Sentinel also refuses to die. There was a 2011 article about the column column. The reporter caught up with Charlie Reese. “I call it the Frankenstein column, That’s one of the problems with the Internet. Once something goes on the Internet, people rewrite.”

Mr. Reese is surprised that the column gets praised as a rare moment of wisdom and insight. “It’s a fifth-grade civics lesson; that’s all that column was,” he said. Pictures today are from “The Special Collections and Archives,Georgia State University Library”.

A Rainbow Prayer

Posted in Holidays, Politics, Religion by chamblee54 on May 2, 2013

Today is the National Day of Prayer. This is a repost.
Pictures are from “The Special Collections and Archives,Georgia State University Library”.

Good Morning G-d. Please give me the slack I need to make it through this busy life. I have a birthday today, and am getting older. Please give me less pain, both above and below the neck. Thank you for letting me get this far. Thank you for the gift of sobriety, and the memory of inebrience. The gift of moderation would have been appreciated. Help me to overcome body chemistry telling me to be unhappy. If this doesn’t work, help me hide it better.
Please tell the Jesus Worshipers to shut up. They make too much noise. Help me to forgive them. Give Jesus Worshipers a bit more humility. Help Jesus Worshipers to get over their confusion, and quit hating gay people. Let people know that G-d does not write books. Let men know that A REAL MAN KEEPS CONTROL OF HIS TEMPER. Please tell the proud people praying today that it is better to listen than to talk, and that louder does not mean more true.
Please find a happy medium for Atlanta water. Let us have neither drought nor flood. It would help if the developers would move to North Carolina, and the politicians would grow a conscience.

G-d, please try to get along better with Allah. This is important. Maybe if you and her got along better, then all those religious crazies would hate each other less. Help white people and black people get along better. Please be good to the people who have already lived, and are now deceased. Please understand that I am not in a hurry to join them.

Help Mr. Obama with the mess this country is in. Help Israel get along with her neighbors, and live within her borders. Help the world solve the carbon dioxide problem.

Thank you for the birds that sing. Thank you for dogs, and dog owners who clean up. Thank you for earth, air, fire, and water. Thank you for the people who enjoy this prayer. Help those who are offended to get over it. Namaste, amen, all my relations, Good Bye.

thankyou

One night, PG was driving on one of the Rockbridge roads in DeKalb county. Suddenly, a deer ran in front of his vehicle. The critter was faster than the Nissan, and calamity averted. There are an estimated 42,996 deer-car collisions in Georgia every year. If you hit a deer, you can do whatever you like with it. If you hit a bear, you have to report it before dinner time.

As the innertubes are reporting, Montana recently passed a law legalizing consumption of roadkill. As The Atlantic reports, “Currently sitting on Montana Governor Steve Bullock’s desk is HB27, a bill that allows Montanans to salvage and eat the beasts they run over with their cars. To the antelopes, deer, elks, or moose out there, you’ve been warned.”

As this tasteful interactive map shows, this is a states rights issue. Bambi burgers have long been legal in Georgia. What is surprising is the freedom loving T states, Tennessee and Texas. They both prohibit collection of roadkill. The CS Monitor questions how much the law is enforced. “Tennessee authorities said no law officer would likely ever charge anybody with “possession of roadkill with intent to eat.”

Not everyone thinks this is a good idea. The Goat Blog reports “But some Montana lawmakers, like state Senator Kendall Van Dyk, questioned eating roadside cuisine from a food safety standpoint. “Despite it’s good intention, it doesn’t pass the smell test for me,” he said in an AP story.”

Highest Aspirations

As you may have heard, someone asked Bradley Manning to be a “grand marshall” at the San Francisco Corporate Pride parade. When enough people objected, another, higher official pulled back the invitation. Since Pvt. Manning will be behind bars when the parade is held, it was a moot point.

The uninvitation is a semantic feast.
“Specifically, what these events have revealed is a system whereby a less-than-handful of people may decide who represents the LGBT community’s highest aspirations as grand marshals for SF Pride.” So that is the ultimate goal of queer life? Or, more specifically, to have Daniel Ellsberg represent you, while you rot in solitary confinement.
Glenn Greewald, who seldom is at a loss for words, chimes in with Bradley Manning is off limits at SF Gay Pride parade, but corporate sleaze is embraced. The hypocrisy patrol is feverishly crunching the sin statistics. Apparently, when you have a corporate sponsored event, it is ok to take tainted loot from criminal multi nationals. But, when a Private, with access to secrets, spills the beans, he is not to be honored. It can get confusing.

There is some more commentary about Bradleygate. The Board of Directors President of SFP is Lisa Williams. This is not the psychic medium, even though the name is the same. Ms. Williams issued the statement about the highest aspirations. In an ironic twist, Lisa Williams is the chair of the political action committee of the Bayard Rustin Coalition.

Bayard Rustin was the primary organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. A speech about having a dream was made that day, while Bayard Rustin made sure there were Port O’Potties for the crowd. Mr. Rustin also was a conscientious objector to the draft. He spent time in prison for his troubles. This was not during the Vietnam war, when this sort of thing was fashionable. This was during World War Two, when conscientious objection was treason. Someone should give Lisa Williams an irony board.

Pictures are from The Library of Congress. These are Union soldiers from the War Between the States. None of these men copied intelligence documents onto a CD, labelled Lady Gaga.

Beijing Liberal

Posted in Politics, Repost this sign, Undogegorized by chamblee54 on April 25, 2013

A tasteful facebook facility called Being Liberal recently posted a graphic about Muhammad Ali. The image has been liked by 17,056, and shared by 9,365. The text in the graphic says
“A reporter asked Muhammad Ali, “How do you feel about the suspected hijackers of 9/11 sharing your faith?” Ali answered, “How do you feel about Hitler sharing yours?”
There are so many ways to trash this. If a person burns to death on the 86th floor, do you need to say “suspected”? What if the reporter was Jewish? How do we know what religion Mr. Hitler was? Did this exchange ever happen?

Apparently, the former heavyweight champion was at ground zero September 20, 2001.
“Former heavyweight boxing champ Muhammad Ali visited the ruins of the World Trade Center on Thursday. When reporters asked how he felt about the suspects sharing his Islamic faith, Ali said, “Religions all have different names, but they all contain the same truths,” adding, “I think the people of our religion should be tolerant and understand people believe different things.”
The facebook listing has this comment:
“It has been brought to our attention that this didn’t actually happen, but that doesn’t detract from the point of the statement. Many people share this sentiment, as reflected by the comments on this image.”
The home page of BL has a picture of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Under it is the motto:
“‘Being Liberal’ – What does it mean to YOU? Share with us! Wear proudly the “Liberal” label, as a badge of honor!” Judging from this graphic, being liberal means saying whatever feels good to say at the moment, without any regard for whether the platitude is the truth.
Snopes has a page debunking the ground zero quote. There is also another tall tale about Mr. Ali.
“Just before takeoff on an airplane flight, the stewardess reminded Ali to fasten his seat belt. “Superman don’t need no seat belt,” replied Ali. “Superman don’t need no airplane either,” retorted the stewardess.”

Use Less Gasoline

This information was originally posted five years ago. PG received a chain letter email about gasoline prices, with these suggestions. With demand increasing, and supply decreasing, the price of petroleum is going to go up.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline. When it gets warmer gasoline expands. When you pump in the afternoon or in the evening… your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline plays an important role.

When you’re filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. You should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you’re getting less fuel for your money.

Fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The more gas you have in your tank the less air is occupying the empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you might imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.

If there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop , DO NOT fill up–most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered. You might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Fans were waiting outside to see a glimpse of him. He stayed more than an hour in the museum. In our guestbook he wrote: “Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber.” Tonight Bieber will give a concert in Arnhem in the Netherlands.”
AFH also has a twitter account, @annefrankhouse. Yesterday #JustinBieber visited @AnneFrankHouse In our guestbook he wrote:Truly inspiring to be able to come here. @dorseyshaw c’mon guys, at least Bieber didn’t sign that Anne Frank note with a yolo hashtag.

destor23 The ignorance that Bieber has displayed here is simply staggering. Everybody with a brain knows that Frank would have been a One Direction fan.
@SandraKon “Who is Anne Frank and why did Justin Bieber go to her house? He never comes to my house. Jealous.” – Beliebers everywhere” idiots.
@hlmurray if Anne Frank were alive today she’d be 83. how many 83 year olds are Justin Bieber fans?
@marianettle It’s not like Anne Frank and Justin Bieber didn’t have anything in common. Both are/were hiding deep in the closet.

Dr. Kermit Gosnell

Like many people, PG only heard the name Kermit Gosnell yesterday. There was a link on facebook to a feature in The Atlantic, Why Dr. Kermit Gosnell’s Trial Should Be a Front-Page Story. The link had a blurb about the article. “The dead babies. The exploited women. The racism.”

For those just coming in, Dr. Kermit Gosnell ran a shady abortion clinic. The allegations include murdering viable babies with scissors. It is a gruesome, horrific story. The feature in the Atlantic does a much better job than this slack blogger. Dr. Gosnell is currently on trial as a result of his activities.

This was the first, of many, eyerolling moments. PG looked through the feature, and finally found the racism angle. It seems like PWOC women got to sit in better waiting rooms than POC women. Why this is mentioned in the same breath as cutting baby spinal cords is a mystery. In an ironic touch, it seems as though Dr. Gosnell is black.

PG made a facebook comment, which received a quick reply. This comment was made before knowing about Dr. Gosnell’s ethnicity. “This is a nasty story. However, the way The Atlantic is “racializing” the story does not help. Note how the eighth word of the blurb is racism. You have to dig down in the story for an explanation. Maybe the blurb writers think that racism is a magic word, that will get the story more attention.” ~ “Look up Margaret Sanger the founder of Planned Parenthood and you may see why this could be construed to be racist. Eugenics at the core of the organization.”

The arguments about Planned Parenthood have been around for years. The anti abortion crowd loves to throw mud, and has a bucket waiting at all times. There is a anti abortion twittergasm going on as we speak. And speak, and speak, and speak.

The simple truth is that criminalizing abortion would not prevent the horrors of Dr. Gosnell. His late term abortions are already illegal. Overturning Roe vs. Wade would not prevent horrors like this, and just might make them more common.

Many women do not want to have a baby. They are going to abort the pregnancy, whether you like it or not. Making political power noise about abortion is not going to stop them. All that noise does is create a toxic atmosphere, which just might help create a future Gosnell clinic.

What can be done? PG is just a slack blogger, and does not pretend to know how to stop abortion. He is horrified by the death of babies, just as is he disgusted with the toxic rhetoric of anti abortion bullies. The hysteria about abortion is one reason many people are reluctant to discuss the issue. Yelling at people will not save babies, even if it does make you feel good about yourself. It is not about saving babies, it is about having a big emotional experience to justify privilege.

Much chattering about this story regards the lack of attention in the corporate media. There are a lot of stories competing for attention, and there is not room for all. The article in The Atlantic was written by Conor Friedersdorf. If you follow the link, you see a list of things he has written lately. Three of the last nine stories are about drone warfare. This is where the United States sends unmanned aircraft into countries eight time zones away, and kills women and children. If you try, you can make that story just as disgusting as Dr. Gosnell. You can even say it is racist.

The Poems Of The Taliban

Posted in Politics, Undogegorized by chamblee54 on April 11, 2013

In the aftermath of 911, the United States needed to get revenge. Afghanistan was invaded. There was little discussion, and the decision was a popular one. The heroin dealers, whose supply of product was endangered by the Taliban, were especially enthusiastic.
Ten and a half years later, there is plenty of heroin. Other than that, there is little improvement. Thousands of Americans have been killed and wounded. Hundreds of billions of dollars have been spent, at a time when the Government is going deeper and deeper into debt. Untold thousands of people have been killed in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Dubyatiefstan. The end of the tunnel gets darker, and further away, every day.

There is a story at Informed Comment, Afghanistan’s Taliban – a differing view of drones. It seems like the people in Stan Land are used to having our flying death machines overhead.
… ‘It’s the Americans trying to view our naked wives’.”
Poetry of the Taliban is a book coming out soon. In the mad rush to demonize and destroy, it is forgotten that it is human beings we are fighting.
“But this is just really guys who write poetry and are Taliban, and then talk about issues they relate to, in sometimes very artistic fashion, in sometimes very simple language. And on a very wide range of subjects. I think also that the Taliban poetry thing had a very different quality when we moved down from Kabul to Kandahar. Because even though a lot of our friends aren’t pro-Talib at all, they would have these tapes with these songs, and would listen to it all the time and it would be on always.”
“I’ve been through the poems looking for references and it doesn’t really come up. The cultural universes of Taliban poems, the songs of the Pakistan Taliban, they’re far more tightly controlled. Interestingly this is another argument to support their being different groups, because the way they go about the songs is different operationally. In Pakistan it goes through a strict production factory, more or less, to make sure the poems properly represent the line they want to take. It’s much more a propaganda product than the stuff that the Afghans come up with. And in the 260 poems we have in our collection there’s not a single mention of drones, and these are poems taken from the south east as well as the south [of Afghanistan].
In the 260 poems we have in our collection there’s not a single mention of drones.”The only thing which comes up and does so twice is the image of Ababil, the green bird, which is a Koranic metaphor for when Abraham is fighting against Nimrud and God sent the green birds to support him. This, I know from talking to Pakistani journalist friends of mine, comes up quite a lot in the drone literature of the Pakistan side, the green birds. The two are often paired together in curious ways. But it’s not really used that way in Afghanistan… Drones don’t really feature in the cultural or aesthetic. Obviously in the videos which come out, which are coming from the east, you’ll have the drone animations and things like that. But that’s coming from the contact with the Pakistanis.”

It should be noted that the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan was drawn by the British, and is disputed today. Much of the territory in Pakistan was in Afghanistan at one time. This is some of the wildest land on earth. It has seen many would be conquerors over the centuries. It will be there when the Americans take their toys home. This is a repost. This is written like H.P. Lovecraft.

There is a bloggingheads.tv show about Israel/Palestine, starring Sarah Posner and Maysoon Zayid. As you might guess by the names, Ms. Zayid is the Muslim.

The show is amazing, and should be listened to in it’s entirety. The point that PG had never heard before concerns people living in the Palestine/Israel landmass. People must carry an ID card, with a religion stamped on it. The government decides what your religion is. Since BHO had a Muslim father, he would be classified as Muslim. Ms. Zayid is not an admirer of BHO.

Welfare Cup

Posted in Politics, The Internet, Undogegorized by chamblee54 on April 9, 2013

PG got an email today. It was a chain email, with the tasteful title “TO PEE OR NOT TO PEE”. It has a couple of paragraphs of text, a cute animation repeated seven times, and a disclaimer. If you print it out, it is five pages long. Holy dead trees, Batman. Here is the message:
I thought you’d like this. We’d probably lower our national def. a whole lot if we put this plan into play. TO PEE OR NOT TO PEE . . . I have a job. I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes & the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In order to get that paycheck, in my case, I am required to pass a random urine test (with which I have no problem). What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don’t have to pass a urine test. So, here is my question: Shouldn’t one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them? Please understand, I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do have a problem with helping someone sitting on their butt – doing drugs while I work.
Can you imagine how much money each state would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check? I guess we could call the program “URINE OR YOU’RE OUT”! Pass this along if you agree or simply delete if you don’t. Hope you all will pass it along, though. Something has to change in this country – AND SOON! P.S. All politicians should have to pass a urine test too!

If you have received this communication in error, please return it to the sender immediately and destroy the original message or accompanying materials and any copy thereof. If you have any questions concerning this message, please contact the sender.

There is soooo much that could be said about this. PG is detoxed from all drugs except Kroger Coffee, but is mightily offended by drug testing. It encourages alcohol use. It does not discriminate between soft and hard drugs. ( Marijuana is stored in fatty tissue, and is the substance most affected by drug testing.) The war on drugs has filled our prisons, cost trillions of dollars, ruined countless lives, and yet is diligently pursued. Bumping people off welfare might make a few people happy, but will probably benefit few people. ( Except for the owners of drug testing companies.)

Maybe we need to criticize the medium, and not worry about the message. Here we have a 245 word message that takes five pages to deliver. This is typical of message emails. People, only show your animated man one time, pack the message into paragraphs, and you can tell your story in one page.

Pass this along if you agree or simply delete if you don’t. Does anyone else think this is RUDE? When you send an email, you invade personal space. You ask a person to look at something, without knowing how busy this person is, how they are feeling, or whether they are interested in your silly little message. It is a shame email is so cheap, if it is going to produce garbage like this.

The icing on the cake is the disclaimer at the bottom. This message is now, in effect, owned by the Coilcraft company. This makes this company look rotten to a lot of people. If you send out message emails at work, please take off the disclaimer. Or, just send the message from home. Or, the best answer of all, don’t send the damn message.

Black and white pictures are from The Library of Congress. This is a repost.
