Rudolph
The story below is a repost. Pictures are from The Library of Congress. There is an appearance by Gerald Rudolph Ford, and his women. Betty was a merry soul.
Someone posted a bit of revisionism about a holiday classic. As he sees it, “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” is about racism.
In a bit of yuletime synchronicity, the urban mythbusters at Snopes posted a piece about Rudolph the same day. It seems as though the Rudolph story was originally written for the Montgomery Ward Stores. The idea was to print a Christmas booklet to give to customers. A staff writer named Robert L. May was picked for the job.
Originally, there were concerns about the red nose, and the connection to heavy drinking. At the time, the original meaning of “merry christmas” had been forgotten. Merry meant intoxicated, and a merry christmas was a drunken one. The booklet was released. It was a big hit with shoppers.
Mr. May had a brother in law named Johnny Marks, who was musically gifted. Mr. Marks wrote the song, and somehow or another Gene Autry came to sing it. A story (which PG heard once, but cannot find a source for) had Mr. Autry doing a recording session. The session went very smoothly, and the sides scheduled to be recorded were finished early. There was a half hour of studio time paid for. Someone produced copies of “Rudolph”, gave them to the musicians, and the recording was knocked out. It became a very big hit.
Gene Autry had a radio show, “Gene Autry’s Melody Ranch”. He created the “cowboy code”. Number five gets our attention today. Under this code, the cowboy must:
1. never shoot first, hit a smaller man, or take unfair advantage. 2. never go back on his word, or a trust confided in him. 3. always tell the truth. 4. be gentle with children, the elderly and animals.
5. not advocate or possess racially or religiously intolerant ideas. 6. help people in distress. 7. be a good worker. 8. keep himself clean in thought, speech, action and personal habits. 9. respect women, parents and his nation’s laws. 10. be a patriot.
“Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” has become a beloved standard, without the troubling religious implications of many holiday songs. It is the second biggest selling record of all time. The only song to sell more is “White Christmas”. </p

“Off-duty officer shoots, kills man who brandished gun at Lenexa Costco An off-duty police officer shot and killed a man who brandished a gun inside a Costco Wholesale store on Sunday. Police got a call about 11 a.m. about a man who was brandishing a firearm at the store. Witnesses said that the man was yelling and pointing a gun. When officers arrived, they found that the man had been shot by someone inside the store and he was pronounced dead. They then learned that an off-duty police officer, who was shopping there, engaged the man inside the store and fatally shot him. …. “You could hear from the front of the store,” one woman said. “A bunch of people were yelling, ‘Everybody get down! Everybody get to the back of the store!'” “We just kind of ran through the neighborhoods to see how far away we could get from the building,” she said. “I just really hope and pray that things get better across the country.” ~ Miguel Robles, a Costco employee, said, “I saw a gentleman standing at the door yelling at everybody. It looked like a .45 revolver in his hand. I just turned around and I started clearing people away from the door and pushing people away. I saw kids and told everybody to grab their kids and keep going, keep going, keep going.” ~ Costco employee Ryan Vacca said, “It was this weird moment for me where I could hear and sense a lot of commotion going on, but it wasn’t really registering with me. I was just kind of watching it ensue.” Vacca said the man was “yelling something about the fire marshal and the doors. It sounded like gibberish.” ~ Bill Payne was shopping with his friend when the incident happened. He said, “I was looking at the TVs and somebody hollered, ‘Man coming in with a gun!’ We ran towards the back and out the side door,” he said, “and when I got to the back, I counted 8 shots. It’s scary.” … Employees have returned to the store, which is expected to reopen on Monday. Armed man in Costco left behind little family, was living in his long-haul truck The screaming man with a gun who terrorized fleeing customers in a Lenexa Costco on Sunday morning was a tractor-trailer driver who, like many long-haul truckers, apparently lived in the cab of his truck. Ronald O. Hunt, 58, left his truck for the last time in the Costco parking lot when — for reasons still unknown to investigators — he walked menacingly into the store where he eventually was gunned down inside by an off-duty lawman.” (1084)
Man Holding Baby Daughter Hostage During Standoff in Covina Is Fatally Shot by Police; Family Questions Use of Force “The nearly 7-hour-long ordeal began about 3 p.m. Sunday when the man, identified by family members as 22-year-old Daniel Navarro, was sitting in a car with his girlfriend and 7-month-old daughter in the 700 block of North Glendora Avenue. The couple apparently got into some sort of argument, prompting a response from the Covina Police Department. At some point, the woman got out of the car but Navarro refused to exit. Authorities said the man in the vehicle made threatening statements and was armed with a knife. … “He picks the baby up and … sometimes he’ll put the baby in front of him to kind of like block the police,” said Jean Claisse. “[The police] were saying ‘We want to help you ‘We want to help you’. And he was saying some bad words back to them.” … Officers said they feared for the girl’s safety because of the man’s statements and devised a plan to rescue her, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release Monday. A loud explosion occurred at the front of the vehicle and officers immediately rushed in and pulled Navarro out. Several shots were fired as Navarro was being dragged out of the vehicle. video (1087)
“On Monday November 27, 2017, Bijan C. Ghaisar died after being on life support for 10 days. Authorities pursued his Jeep sport-utility vehicle on the evening of November 17, 2017, because it had been involved in a hit-and-run accident on the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Alexandria, Virginia. The pursuit ended in the Fort Hunt area of Fairfax County. Ghaisar was then shot by U.S. Park Police after a short chase. His family stated that he had been shot three times in the head and suffered irreversible brain damage…. no weapons were found in his vehicle.” (1090)
Bicyclist killed by deputy cruiser responding to call “POMPANO BEACH, FL. Authorities say a bicyclist has died following a collision with a Florida deputy’s patrol car. Broward Sheriff’s Office officials say the crash happened Tuesday afternoon in Pompano Beach. The bicyclist, who wasn’t immediately named, died at the scene. Police would not comment. The officers were wearing body cameras, and the video will be reviewed as part of the investigation. The officers have been placed on a 30-day administrative leave, Ryan said.” (video) (1097)
Undercover Police Fatally Shoot Robbery Suspect in North Hollywood: LAPD “A suspected male robber was dead after being shot by undercover police in North Hollywood late Thursday afternoon, authorities said. Undercover Los Angeles Police Department officers were investigating a series of robberies in the area when they spotted the suspect at around 4:25 p.m. on the 12000 block of Vose Street, according to Lt. Chris Ramirez. Ramirez said the man jumped into a vehicle and attempted to flee. The suspect got out of the car after a short chase, at which point officers started shooting, Ramirez said. Asked whether the suspect knew the people who had their guns drawn at him were police, Ramirez said, “Usually our detectives always identify themselves as police officers.” Witnesses reported hearing around 10 gunshots with officers asking the suspect to show his hands. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died of gunshot wounds, according to police. It’s unclear what prompted officers to start shooting and whether the suspect was carrying a weapon. Authorities have not identified the suspect.” (1099)

Michael Andraychak, a San Francisco police spokesman. … Witnesses told police a gold-colored sport utility vehicle drove away from the scene, and officers spotted both the van and the SUV “traveling together down the streets of the Bayview district,” Andraychak said. Police officers stopped the gold-colored SUV at Gilman Avenue and Ingalls Street. (37.7188, -122.388) The men in the vehicle were detained without incident. … additional officers chased the white lottery van into the housing complex to Griffith Street and Fitzgerald Avenue, police said. The driver hit a fence and got out of the van, at which point at least one officer opened fire, police said. It was not immediately clear whether the man was armed. A patrol car stopped behind the lottery van had a shattered front passenger-side window, but police did not say how it was broken. The suspected carjacker, identified by the city medical examiner’s office as 42-year-old Keita O’Neil, was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.” (1102)
About That NYT Article Part Two
The NYT article about Tony Hovater got a lot of attention. As other stories become the fascination of the day, Mr. Hovater is fading into unemployed obscurity. This followup feature (here is part one) will look at some of the stupid things that have said about the NYT article. Pictures are from The Library of Congress. If you want to skip over the text, and look at the pictures, you will be forgiven.
Here Are Some Facts and Questions About That Nazi the New York Times Failed to Note takes the prize. “He’s not really named “Tony Hovater.” Like many neo-Nazis and white supremacists, Hovater uses a modified version of his legal name in his racist activities. His real name is William Anthony Hovater, which is the name he’s registered to vote under and which appears on other public records associated with him. It’s unusual for any newspaper, let alone the Times, not to say when their subject isn’t using their real name. A paper that insists on noting Snoop Dogg’s legal name can probably do the same for a Nazi, no?”
What the New York Times’ Nazi Story Left Out Apparently Mr. Hovater is motivated by economics, as much as race. However, Slate never misses a chance to stir the racial stew. Author Jamelle Bouie is especially fond of the word *virulent*, using it six times, always in front of racism/racist. Another Slate feature, The Urgent Reality of Online Extremism, says the NYT article was “deeply fact checked.” The link is to the splinter article referenced above … the one that said Tony Hovater was not the real name of William Anthony Hovater.
@panerabread featured prominently in the NYT. While researching his commentary, PG wondered if Panera had distanced itself from the controversy. The turkey sandwich was no longer available for comment. A google search turned up this exchange. @nytimes The Chemicals in Your Mac and Cheese @panerabread “With us, you can have your mac and feel good about it too.”
@magi_jay twittered a timely tweetstorm about the NYT article. Their comments focused on other things the NYT could have said. “@magi_jay 16/ What are some other things the Times could done? Well they could have interviewed a behavioral scientist on the psychological traits of white supremacists. How they justify their hatred, etc. . . . As well as the tendencies of their white neighbors to look the other way.” @magi_jay does not consider that the NYT article contained 2373 words. This is roughly ten times the length of the typical reader’s patience. If the NYT has done all the things @magi_jay suggested, the article would have become a doorstop novel.
@bessbell “I don’t mean to sound intolerant or coarse, but fuck this Nazi and fuck the gentle, inquisitive tone of this Nazi normalizing barf journalism, and fuck the photographer for not just throwing the camera at this Nazi’s head and laughing.” This is the beginning of another popular twitfest. It was mentioned in the sorry we offended you article, in which the *liberal media* NYT apologizes for allowing Mr. Hovater to live. @bessbell seems to confuse white boy cosplay for the Schutzstaffel. *Nazi* is being trivialized by promiscuous overuse, and will soon mean as much as *racist*, *christian*, or *poopyhead*.
The NYT article about Tony Hovater is past its fifteen minutes. SJW twitter can get their woke jollies listening to I’m Not Racist. #MeToo warriors can sharpen their pitchforks, and wait for the next celebrity to fall from grace. As Roseanne Roseannadanna used to say, It’s Always Something.
About That NYT Article
A Voice of Hate in America’s Heartland is a controversial bit of product placement for Panera Bread. New York Times reporter Richard Fausset goes to smalltown Ohio to meet Tony Hovater. “In 2015, he helped start the Traditionalist Worker Party, one of the extreme right-wing groups that marched in Charlottesville, Va., in August, and again at a “White Lives Matter” rally last month in Tennessee. The group’s stated mission is to “fight for the interests of White Americans.’’
Virtual America is not pleased. Twitter screeds by @magi_jay and @bessbell have been widely shared. This facebook comment speaks for many: “The article serves to humanize and normalize him/far-right extremism/Nazism — which was one of Tony Havater’s stated desires/goals re: his present involvement in the white nationalist/Nazi movement. By normalizing them, they are given a seat at the table of political discourse which is absolutely a back-asswards step.”
When PG sees a tweetstorm like this, his first instinct is to find the original material. Read the article, not what @ShaunKing says about it. When you read the original, you wonder if it is the same article. The original is full of snide references, and logical fallacies. Maybe what the masses want is a ritual denunciation of the anointed poopyhead. As one online publication put it, “ensure that white supremacists and Nazis are thought of and treated the same way you might treat a roach scurrying across a kitchen counter.” Lets look at some quotes from the NYT article.
“Mr. Hovater’s face is narrow and punctuated with sharply peaked eyebrows, like a pair of air quotes, and he tends to deliver his favorite adjective, “edgy,” with a flat affect and maximum sarcastic intent. It is a sort of implicit running assertion that the edges of acceptable American political discourse — edges set by previous generations, like the one that fought the Nazis — are laughable.”
The previous generations of America are a mixed bag. Yes, they fought the Germans in WW2. They also fought Native Americans, and said “the only good Indian is a dead Indian.” “The edges of acceptable American political discourse” once included Jim Crow laws. American political discourse is an ever-changing work in progress.
“After he attended the Charlottesville rally, in which a white nationalist plowed his car into a group of left-wing protesters, killing one of them, Mr. Hovater wrote that he was proud of the comrades who joined him there: “We made history. Hail victory.” In German, “Hail victory” is “Sieg heil.””
James Alex Fields is accused of killing Heather Meyer with a Dodge Challenger. We don’t know if he was acting on orders, where those orders came from, or if he is a loose cannon, acting on his own. While the march organizers certainly bear some responsibility for that tragedy, we do not know the entire story. In any event, that has nothing to do with the German translation of “Hail Victory.” That interjection is a red herring.
I Interviewed a White Nationalist and Fascist. What Was I Left With? was published after the backlash hit. It is a commentary by the author, in which he laments not finding the “rosebud” to this story. There is a revealing quote near the end. “…I saw, on his bookshelf, two volumes of Helena Blavatsky’s “The Secret Doctrine,” 19th-century work of esoteric spiritualism whose anti-Semitism influenced Nazi thinking. But even if I had called Mr. Hovater yet again — even if we had discussed Blavatsky at length, the way we did his ideas about the Federal Reserve Bank — I’m not sure it would have answered the question. What makes a man start fires?”
Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (Еле́на Петро́вна Блава́тская) is a 19th century Russian that few people know about. This obscurity allows Mr. Fausset to fill in the blanks with a gratuitous comment about anti-Semitism. This inclusion also assumes that Mr. Hovater has read the books.
The reference to the Federal Reserve Bank is more telling. If you listen to this podcast, you learn that Mr. Hovater is more concerned with economics than white nationalism. You will also learn that many of his ideas are not well thought out. Mr. Hovater, a former drummer in a heavy metal band, is similar to that libertarian in the break room … the one who will not shut up, and go back to work.
Tony Hovater is a walking, talking illustration of the Dunning-Kruger effect. (The spell check suggestion for Hovater is Overate.) He simply does not know what he is talking about. People who call him a Nazi are missing the point. The Nazis were smart, and tough. Mr. Hovater has his good points, much to the disappointment of sjw-twitter. Unfortunately, he simply is not that smart. The NYT obscures this proud ignorance with snarky comments about Charlottesville, and swastikas.
Saying Tony Hovater is stupid will not satisfy the keyboard warrior. Talking about economics is not as much fun as denouncing the third reich … as if the LARP-tikitorch crowd is the same as the Schutzstaffel. SJW twitter does not like subtlety. This is what they want to hear: “Of course, profiles on the people directly harmed by this hate speech and violence would be much more compelling. But that would require whiteness—white maleness, specifically—to be uncentered. And uncentering whiteness is harder than eating just one Lay’s potato chip, apparently.”

The Lawrence Hawkins case is considered suspicious. Man Killed by Prichard Officer Was Unarmed “The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office confirms an investigation is underway into a fatal officer involved shooting in Prichard. Mobile Police says the it happened Saturday night at 9:30 during a traffic stop. It happened on First Avenue at Hanes Street. The deceased was not identified … The shooting occurred while the agency was attempting to arrest a suspect with a warrant that had been obtained by the West Virginia State Police for armed robbery charges, Barnhart said. … the agency, as a matter of policy, does not release the names of deputy marshals involved in shooting incidents until the conclusion of all investigations.” (1062)
Investigation Underway After Fort Worth Police Vehicle Hits, Kills Pedestrian “Police confirmed Friday evening that one of their units traveling southbound on Hemphill Street hit and killed a man walking across the street. Neighbors near the crash scene say their area is a bigger safety concern. The pedestrian’s body ended up on Fernado Florez’s yard. The victim, ” Leopoldo Castaneda-Solis, “… died at the scene. A cross has been planted on Florez’s yard. He says he is sad about what happened but is not shocked. Florez claims the street lights will be on and then suddenly turn off in the middle of the night. “If I had to go to the store, even just a couple of blocks, I’d call a cab. I’m not crossing the street here because a lot of times these vehicles don’t have their lights on.” (1064)
Death of inmate at county jail under investigation “The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an inmate’s death at the county jail early Friday. Fort Walton Beach police had arrested Nathaniel Harrison Edwards, 31, … shortly after midnight on an outstanding warrant of felony battery-domestic violence, … During a search at the jail, Edwards was caught trying to conceal a plastic bag containing methamphetamine. The Sheriff’s Office then charged him with possession of a controlled substance and smuggling contraband into a detention facility. Edwards became combative about 3:50 a.m. and had to be physically controlled by corrections staff, according to jail officials. Edwards became unresponsive and was taken to North Okaloosa Medical Center in Crestview, where he was pronounced dead.” (1065)
Two dead in stolen pickup after deputies open fire “… Sheriff Manuel Gonzales said the incident started around 3:50 a.m. when the BCSO helicopter spotted a white pickup truck that had been reported stolen. Albuquerque police officers had encountered the truck earlier in the night, but a spokesman did not have any information about it. North Valley-area command deputies responded to the report and tried to stop the truck. “They actually got out ahead of this and deployed a spike belt that was successful in spiking the vehicle,” Gonzales said. But, he said, the truck didn’t stop and instead continued to flee from authorities, driving erratically near Coors and Interstate 40. Deputies performed a “pursuit intervention technique” – in which a cruiser hits a fleeing vehicle to get it to stop – in a nearby neighborhood, and the truck came to a standstill about a quarter mile away on Coors and Glenrio NW. “Subsequently the deputies felt threatened,” Gonzales said. “We don’t know how many shots were fired.” Two people were found dead in the truck, and two people exited safely and were taken into custody, he said. He did not identify the people who were killed and did not know how old they were. He also did not identify the people who were taken into custody. Gonzales did not know why the deputies had felt threatened or if any shots had been fired at them.” (1066/1067)
Officer Involved Shooting in Klamath Falls “Police say earlier in the day at 4:30 p.m. officers and detectives from the Klamath Falls Police Department investigated an attempted murder incident at a home in Klamath Falls. They say during the investigation, officers developed probable cause to arrest the suspect for Attempted Muder, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Burglary in the first degree, Menacing, Assault in the fourth degree, and Reckless Endangering. Police say the suspect fled the residence prior to the arrival of law enforcement. Police say at 9:35 p.m. they contacted the suspect in the 2100 block of Darrow Drive and the shooting happened. The names of the officer and suspect are not being released at this time.” “Matthew David Borner, 52, was wanted on an outstanding felony warrant and suspected of stealing a vehicle when he was contacted by Klamath Falls police officers just after 8:30 a.m., a press release from the district attorney’s office said. A confrontation ensued and Borner was shot by one or more officers. District Attorney Rob Patridge could not say whether Borner had a weapon, or if one was fired, citing the fact that the investigation is ongoing.” (1079)

Whales Of The City
The plot lines in “Tales of the City” can be tough to figure out. The books have been *coming out* since 1978, which is several lifetimes ago. PG read the first installment, Tales of the City, sometime in the eighties, thought it was fun, and went on about his way. At some point, PG got copies of More Tales of the City and Further Tales of the City, but is not sure if he read them. Significant Others turned up at a yard sale. PG remembers the step grandson rescuing the step grandpa at a radical women’s retreat. Good clean fun.
Babycakes and Sure of You, the last two books of the original series, will be discussed today. It can be tough to make sense of the plot. Michael Tolliver goes from the “Whore of Babylon” to model HIV+ citizen. Mary Ann goes from the naive Ohio girl to a popular TV personality. Mrs. Madrigal is Mrs. Madrigal, and San Francisco is San Francisco.
PG found Babycakes in a box of free books at a faerie gathering. Merry part, merry meat again. BC is set early in the Reagan Presidency. Michael’s bf, Jon, died of AIDS in 1982. Michael goes to England, and runs into an old friend, Mona. It is a complicated, and tough to believe, story. You have to put away your skepticism, and go with the story. It is a good story, and fun to read. This is why PG reads.
Sure of You was the last book of the original series that PG was sure he had not read. The library had it. SOY is set in 1988, and this is a key part of the story. AIDS is running wild. Michael has a pill box with a beeper. Everywhere you turn, men are dead and dying. PG lived his version of 1988 in Georgia.
There were some interviews with Armistead Maupin during this era. He is very angry, and into outing celebrities. The name Tom Selleck was prominently mentioned. This anger shows up in SOY. Michael goes to a black tie reception with Mary Ann. A famous designer, who might be Calvin Klein, hits on Michael. There is an angry lecture about being in the closet. The improbability of Calvin Klein hitting on a plant store owner is not mentioned.
On page 107, the designer’s wife says something to Mary Ann about Ivana Trump. The TV personality wants to know what Mrs. Trump is like in real life. Thirty years later, Ivana Trump is the ex wife/kidsmomma of the President of the United States. Maybe those plots were not as far fetched as what really happens. Shut Up Mrs. Betty Bowers
@BettyBowers needs to shut up. They were once funny. Unfortunately, comedians run out of things to make fun of. They start to piss on any target they can find. (Which they is singular, and which they is plural?) If your toes get stepped on, then it is your fault. Sooner or later, the whole thing gets annoying, and it is time for someone more obnoxious.
Hark! NEW VIDEO: Almost 20 Words & Expressions You Need to Humanely Euthanize Now. Glory! was released September 21. It appeared this week on facebook, allowing an unsuspecting PG to wallow in the putrescent glory. The screed features a score of obsolete language. So that you don’t have to watch the video, here they are: literally, actually, classy, voracious reader, alt-right, social justice warriors, antifa, snowflake, safe space, pc, values, patriot, exact same, wheelhouse, #fakenews, blessed, religious freedom, christian.
PG got through five of the forbidden words before his inner snowflake melted. The word was alt-right. Ultra conservatives have been around for years. When PG was a kid, it was the John Birch Society. It is one of the problems with free speech. People are going to say stupid things. With the internet, there are more ways to transmit this nonsense. One solution is to ignore the idiots, and move on.
Mrs. Betty Bowers, America’s Best Christian ranted for a bit about the alt-right. “English (pause) is not body spray to hide your odiousness.(drag out O) Don’t use vague words when precise ones already exist. For example, if you are a rapist, you are not “alt-yes”, you’re (pause, shake finger at camera) a (p,sfac) rapist. (p,sfac) And if you”re a racist, you’re not “alt-right,” you’re (p,sfac) a (p,sfac) racist”(p,sfac.) At this point, PG had to turn the video off. He got a lovely screen shot.
Mrs. Betty Bowers is a character played by Deven Green. “America’s Best Christian” is from Thompson, Manitoba. Yes, this white man, playing an American Christian woman, is Canadian. And they think you’re (p,sfac) a (p,sfac) racist. (p,sfac) Pictures are from The Library of Congress.

Upon arrival, Borges said a number of vehicles were seen leaving the area and police attempted to pull one of them over. It was during that encounter that an officer opened fire into the car and shot the driver, Ruiz-Barreto. Fall River police said the 911 caller had reported a car was smoking, and they heard two bangs that could have been gunshots. Police did not comment on why the officer decided to use deadly force.” (1042)

The Tehama County District Attorney announced that the gunman was 43-year-old Kevin Janson Neal … Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston … said around 7:50 a.m., the gunman shot one person near the corner of Bobcat Lane and Fawn Lane. The gunman took off in a vehicle and opened fire at several other locations in the community, including at the Rancho Tehama elementary school, before crashing the vehicle. No children were killed at the school, but several of them were shot and wounded. A six-year-old remained hospitalized Tuesday night. The assistant sheriff said the gunman then stole a second vehicle before he was killed in a confrontation with two officers.” (1045)
2 other incidents are noteworthy. Man fatally shot by BR police officer was under investigation for child abuse, state police say “State Police said the trouble started at the Palms Apartments on McClelland Drive just after 6 p.m. when officers with the Baton Rouge Police Department were asked to escort a Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) caseworker to the complex. State police said the police officer escorted the caseworker due to the nature of the allegations against Calvin Toney and his personal history. “During the course of that investigation, a struggle ensued with officers and the suspect,” said Sr. Tpr. Bryan Lee with LSP Troop A. “The suspect was shot and killed during that struggle.” It is standard procedure to have Louisiana State Police investigate a shooting involving a police officer. Troopers would not say whether Toney had a gun, but authorities did confirm that the struggle lasted several minutes and that Toney was “tased” multiple times before being shot. They also worked to dispel a rumor that quickly spread on social media following the shooting. “Our preliminary investigation shows the suspect was NOT handcuffed at the time he was shot,” Lee explained.” … The caseworker was looking into several claims of child abuse against Toney. WGNO News reported that as Toney attempted to flee the apartment when he was confronted by the officer and caseworker, he started to fight. Officials say that the officer deployed his stun gun “several times” and eventually shot him. After being shot, Toney reportedly fled the scene and was caught by the officer outside of the complex. The officer said Toney was still resisting and was then put into handcuffs until emergency medical personnel could arrive.”(1044)
Suicidal man shot and killed by police officer Wednesday in south Oklahoma City “About 2:40 a.m. Wednesday, 29-year-old Dustin Robert Pigeon called 911 and told a dispatcher he was going to kill himself. … Early Wednesday morning, officers found Pigeon holding a bottle of lighter fluid in his left hand and a lighter in his right hand, Oklahoma City police report. As officers approached, he began pouring the lighter fluid on himself and tried to light the lighter as officers ordered him to the ground. Pigeon reportedly ignored the commands and officer Troy Nitzky, a two-year veteran, fired a single round from his bean bag shotgun. Shortly after, Sgt. Keith Sweeney, a nine-year veteran, fired several rounds from his firearm, striking and killing Pigeon. … Capt. Bo Mathews, a spokesman for the Oklahoma City Police Department, said Pigeon was considered a danger to the officers and others as he was attempting to light the lighter fluid. “In this instance (it) would be unknown if he was going to run at somebody and douse them with the fluid and light it,” … Geoffrey P. Alpert, a professor of criminology at the University of South Carolina and an author on police use of force, spoke previously with The Oklahoman about the police department’s use of lethal cover in using non-lethal weapons as a sound policy, but questioned the use of force in Wednesday’s shooting. “Isn’t the whole point of trying to save his life as opposed to taking his life?” Alpert said. He questioned the need of the firearm with a bean bag shotgun available, saying if the first round was ineffective then “you get them with another bean bag, you don’t shoot them. That’s not smart.” “I think the bean bag is certainly reasonable. You’ve got to see what happens,” Alpert said. “Taking a life in those situations is going to take a lot of understanding and explaining. I don’t see the justification yet. But, then again, you never know. You have to hear what the officer has to say.” (1048)

Town Hall Meeting
There were two events PG could go to. Come Meet A Black Person Event was 23 miles away, at rush hour. The Brookhaven Town Hall Meeting was a mile away. PG walked to City Hall.
The meeting started on time. PG counted fourteen people in the room, with a few more coming in later. At least six of these people were employees of the city. Hari Karikaran, the Public Works Director, was the only person of color attending.
A few people had complaints about gunfire near Briarwood Park. Someone said that Blackburn Park is not well maintained. There is a plan to plant a different variety of grass in Blackburn Park, in a test section. After a while, someone will see if this test section works.
The Public Safety department said that it is difficult to maintain a full strength force. There is a program to monitor the license plates of cars entering the city, and some criminals have been caught. There is a problem with car break-ins, and someone has been stealing apartment mailboxes. One of the mailbox thieves was caught with the license plate detection program.
Facebook broadcast the meeting, with mixed results. People kept going back to the device, hoping to make it work. Finally, the broadcast went on line. You can see it using the link. The white haired man in the second row did not have much to say.
The event in Lawrenceville happened. Group of white people attends ‘Come Meet a Black Person’ mixer in Atlanta “Even with a police car parked across the street, the event went off without a hitch.” It was organized by Cheryle Moses, the founder of Urban Mediamakers.
Ms. Moses had this to say: “I’m not naive. I didn’t know what to expect. I had a 9 mm in my purse in case something happened. ’Cause I’m not going out like that,” … “I have a permit to conceal and carry. It’s important to know your rights. Racism, that’s white people’s problem. They created it. They need to fix it. We [black people] can only worry about ourselves,” …“White people are oblivious. We know them. We have to know them, you know. It’s not like that for them. They don’t know anything about us, they don’t have to.”

Believe Your Way To Hell
These 666 words are a repost from 2010. It is based on a post at 22 Words. At that time, 22 Words was a quirky blog, with the emphasis on comments of 22 words or less. Today, 22 Words is a corporate blog. The top trending story now is “This Is Why You Should NEVER Put Toilet Paper On a Toilet Seat.” If you want to skip over the text, and look at the pictures, you will be forgiven. These monochrome pictures are from the FSA/PWI collection at The Library of Congress.
This post is about life after death and belief. Originally, the comment was going to be about gaining life after death through belief in Jesus, but the comment was over the 22 word limit. To get to the limit, the reference to Jesus was taken out. Did this substantially alter the meaning of the statement? Is it the matter of belief that counts, or does it have to be a specific belief about Jesus? And why should this matter to living people?
PG feels the pain that Jesus has caused him on a daily basis. He is not likely to change his mind about this religion, no matter how many people talk about it. It is unlikely that very many Jesus worshipers have changed their mind either…questioning your beliefs is the opposite of “faith”, and many are scared of going to hell if they have the wrong opinions. Somehow, this is not how PG wants to live.
22 Words is a regular stop for PG. The idea is to say what you need to say in 22 words or less. The owner of the blog does not enforce this rule, and few commenters practice it. The opening serve of the thread was “Do difficult times make you more or less empathetic? For me the answer is both. Some struggles I’ve faced make me more understanding of others. But sometimes I feel like: “I got over it; why can’t you?” (36 words). The comments took on the colors of Jesus Worship, which is to be expected at TwentyTwoWords.
Chamblee54/ “I feel that way about life after death obsessed Jesus Worshipers. Is there an etymological link between arrogant and air head?” Christen “Speaking of life after death, I’m just starting Randy Alcorn’s book Heaven and very convinced on the importance of being much more focused on our life after death. What did you mean by that, Chamblee?” chamblee54 “I feel the emphasis placed on life after death is mistaken. I disagree with the Jesus worship beliefs on life after death.” christen “Thanks for the reply, chamblee. I think I’m either inexperienced in “the emphasis placed on life after death” debate/issue (?) and “Jesus worship beliefs” or just don’t understand what you’re saying. Either way, I know I can’t wait to be in that place with that person !”
At this point, PG saw the dialog spinning off topic. This was his fault, to a degree, and he felt a responsibility to bring it back into line. The suspicion was that Christen was a Jesus Worshiper, who had never questioned a set of beliefs handed to her. A key portion of this was the life after death issue, which to PG is a fundamental flaw with Jesus Worship Religion. (PG disagrees with the concept of attaining life after death through holding certain beliefs about Jesus. PG also disagrees with the emphasis place on life after death in Jesus Worship.)
Chamblee54 “This is starting to get off topic. I suspect you have never questioned the concept of acquiring life after death through beliefs.” That clocks in at precisely 22 words. The original comment was about acquiring life after death through belief in Jesus. To bring the comment under the 22 word limit, PG decided to eliminate the reference to Jesus. And there was a realization that the fundamental meaning of the comment was not changed. If the status of one’s soul post mortem can be changed by a belief during life…a highly suspect concept to PG…does it matter what the belief is?
