1187 Matthew Riehl is the story of the week. Douglas County Deputy Zackari Parrish died during the incident. Matthew Riehl was an Iraq war veteran. He was very vocal about his opinions. Mr. Riehl made numerous you tube videos, many of which involved profane rants against local law enforcement. His facebook page, Matt Gonzo, has been disabled.
“Authorities in suburban Denver were investigating what led a 37-year-old man to fire more than 100 rounds in his apartment on sheriff’s deputies, killing one (Zackari Parrish) and injuring four others. Two civilians were also injured. The Douglas County coroner identified the suspect as Matthew Riehl. … The incident began around 5:15 a.m … Authorities had left the home barely an hour earlier in response to a complaint of a “verbal disturbance” involving two men, the sheriff’s office said. One of the men told them the suspect “was acting bizarre and might be having a mental breakdown” but the deputies found no evidence of a crime. When deputies were called back, a man who had left came by to give them a key and granted permission to enter the home, leaving again before shots were fired. “The suspect was just making a ton of noise and annoying everyone around him,” (Douglas County Sheriff Tony) Spurlock said. Spurlock said deputies came under fire almost immediately and were shot “very, very quickly” after entering the apartment and trying to talk with the suspect, who was holed up inside a bedroom. “They all went down almost within seconds of each other, so it was more of an ambush-type of attack on our officers,” Spurlock said. “He knew we were coming and we obviously let him know that we were there.” The wounded deputies tried to pull the fallen officer, Zackari Parrish, out of the line of further gunfire but were unable to because of their own injuries and only managed to “crawl to safety,” Spurlock said. Four officers, including Parrish, were shot from a bedroom around 6 a.m., forcing the retreat. A SWAT team entered the apartment at about 7:30 a.m. in an exchange of gunfire that left the gunman dead and another officer injured.” (1187)
9 other stories are considered noteworthy. “Texas DPS reports that Heath Wayne Hodges, 36, of Iowa Park, was shot at around 10:30 pm Saturday. The officer involved was not injured. The exact details of the shooting have not been made available at this time. … It is believed Hodges was at his hunting lease at the time of the shooting.” (1186)
“Delano Police say it happened at about 8:50 a.m., when two officers with the Delano Police Department responded to a suspicious vehicle parked in an alleyway in the 2100 block of Norwalk Street. As officers approached the vehicle on foot, the suspect vehicle began accelerating toward one of the officers. Police say the officer feared for his life and fired his firearm, striking the driver. ( Ernie Macias ) The driver died from his injuries. The passenger inside the suspect vehicle fled into a nearby home; after about an hour of negotiations, the man came out and was taken into custody.” (1188)
“… officials say early Monday morning at about 3:15 a.m. Walker County deputies were called to the 100 block of Meadowview Drive in Rossville, GA for a welfare check after a 911 call was made. The caller said a female at the home was threatening to kill herself and her children. When Deputy John Chandler arrived he saw Mark Steven Parkinson in the home with a weapon. The GBI said, deputies announced multiple times that they were from the Walker County Sheriff’s Office. Parkinson pointed the weapon at Deputy Chandler and that is when Deputy Chandler fired multiple shots at Parkinson.” … “The GBI confirms that the initial 911 call did not come from inside the Parkinson family home. They are currently investigating who made the call and why.” (001)
“Maryland State Police said 16-year-old Derrick Staton of Clinton, Maryland was crossing the roadway on Crain Highway (Route 301) at Chadds Ford Drive when he was struck by a vehicle being driven by Officer Gary Bottalico at about 1 p.m. Bottalico was off-duty while heading to work in his marked K9 truck at the time of the collision. He and his K9 partner were not injured during the incident. Bottalico has been placed on routine administrative paid leave. Authorities say 16-year-old Derrick Staton of Clinton, Maryland was struck and killed in Brandywine, Maryland on Monday, Jan. 1, 2018. MSP said its preliminary investigation indicates Derrick may have made a “pedestrian error,” perhaps contributing to the crash. … Derrick’s family said they have several questions about his death, including why the busy intersection has no crosswalks or sidewalks.” (002)
“Witnesses reported that Ronald Elliot, age 49, was armed with a gun and had locked himself inside his bedroom. Prior to an Ozark police officer arriving at the home, a woman had entered the bedroom in an attempt to disarm Elliot. When the local police officer entered the bedroom, witnesses heard the officer instruct Elliot to put down the gun, followed by the sound of a gunshot.” (007)
“On January 3, 2018, at approximately 4:41 p.m., an on duty BART Police Officer dressed in full police uniform was inside the West Oakland BART Station when he heard an active shooting taking place. The BART Police officer responded to the shooting which was located near the intersection of 7th Street and Chester Street. The officer observed two males in a struggle with each other; one of the men possessed a handgun. After several commands were given, the officer discharged his firearm striking the man who was in possession of the handgun; he later succumbed to his injuries. Investigators are attempting to clarify how the other man, who was listed in stable condition and has since been released from the hospital, sustained his injuries.” (010)
“A man was fatally shot by Long Beach police early Friday after he allegedly held a Holiday Inn employees hostage with a gun, officials said. The incident occurred about 12:50 a.m. when a man apparently left his pickup truck parked at an adjacent Chevron station and went into the hotel, police spokeswoman Nancy Pratt told KTLA. Police then received a call from one of the employee who was allegedly being held hostage by the suspect at the Holiday Inn. … Responding officers found the man armed with a gun. They tried to “make contact” with the man when the officer-involved shooting occurred, Pratt said. She did not elaborate on what led to the shooting.” (013)
“An officer made contact with Gregory Stough in his Pontiac Bonneville around 3:21 a.m. The officer discovered Stough was wanted on four traffic warrants related to vehicle inspections. Stough also had a suspended driver’s license, police said. Another officer arrived to help take Stough into custody. Stough resisted arrest, and during the struggle, he put his car in reverse with the driver’s door still open, police said. He accelerated backwards, trapping an officer between the door and the car. According to the news release, the suspect continued driving in reverse and “propelled the officer violently into a parked police vehicle.” The initiating officer then opened fire. Stough put the car in drive and traveled toward the officer firing at him, police said. The officer continued firing on Stough, killing him. … Family members said Saturday they weren’t sure why Stough was at the church parking lot, but his father speculated his son might have been out drinking in the area. Stough might tried to stay with some family who lived near the church, but then tried to “sleep it off” in the parking lot. Stough had some trouble with the law and with drinking but had recently been trying to turn himself around because he has daughters, according to his sister. ” (015)
“The FBI The FBI says a 51-year-old man is dead following an Arizona shooting involving a U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer who was not injured. The FBI identified the man killed in the Friday night incident as Tyler Miller and said he was last known to be living in Kansas. FBI spokesman Glenn Milnor didn’t immediately respond Saturday to a request for Miller’s last-known place of residence in Kansas. The FBI said the shooting occurred on U.S. 89A in Oak Creek Canyon north of Sedona but released no information on circumstances of the shooting.” (016)

Blackface Drag At Club Sheba
Mary Cheney became famous in a traditional way. Her father is Dick Cheney, former VPOTUS, hunting guide, and terrorist. Apparently Ms. Cheney felt the need for attention recently. She posted the following matter on facebook.
“Why is it socially acceptable — as a form of entertainment — for men to put on dresses, make up and high heels and act out every offensive stereotype of women (bitchy, catty, dumb, slutty, etc.) — but it is not socially acceptable — as a form of entertainment — for a white person to put on blackface and act out offensive stereotypes of African Americans?”
When it comes to getting people to look at you, Mary Cheney is not in the same hemisphere as RuPaul. By remarkable coincidence, there is going to be a new season of a cable tv show, about drag queens, hosted by RuPaul. The comments by Ms. Cheney were seen by RuPaul as an opportunity to promote product. There is no bad publicity.
We are not going to discuss the moral calculus of blackface vs drag in this post. That’s what facebook, twitter, and comment sections are for. This blog does not have the intellectual gravitas of youtube comment sections. Mary Cheney and RuPaul are getting the attention they require.
The pictures today are from The Library of Congress. These ladies were participating in “Inter city beauties, Atlantic City Pageant, 1925.” There is something appropriate about beauty pageant pictures illustrating a discussion of the relative political correctness of blackface and drag queens. If you want a picture of Mary Cheney, go somewhere else. If you don’t want to see RuPaul, good luck.
The second part of this feature is a repost. The show was performed in 1979. I recently saw “Carroll.” He lives in Pennsylvania today, and has a beard nine inches long.
Reading about Shirley Q. Liquor brought back memories of a night long ago. A young man, who I will call Carroll, grew up across the street. In his spare time, he did drag shows. What I was expecting was Carol Burnett and Lily Tomlin, using his own voice. One Sunday night, free admission and a buffet was all I needed to venture downtown and see the show.
The venue was an unpretentious bar called Club Sheba. The clientele was mostly lesbians, many of whom were African Americans.
Club Sheba was located on Forrest Avenue. The street was named for Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate General who, some say, founded the Ku Klux Klan. Forrest Avenue late became Ralph McGill Boulevard, named after the former editor of the Atlanta Constitution.
As show time approached, I saw a table that had empty seats. I pulled back a seat, and a beefy lady informed me that she did not want a man to sit at that table.
The first act was what I expected. The reputation of Carol Burnett did not suffer, and Lily Tomlin was still in the closet. After the first act, I shot a game of pool with my friend, and went to the buffet for a second plate. A lady stopped me. ”You’re not supposed to get full”
I went back to the pool table. After a while there was a crowd standing around, and it was evident that a second act was going to start soon. I saw a black lady in the crowd making faces at me, took a second look, and realized that it was Carroll.
He did not use his voice this time, but lip synced to Grace Jones and Diana Ross. He wore blackface, and an afro wig. The crowd at the Club Sheba enjoyed this part of the show. Many of the Black Lesbians went to the stage and stuffed dollar bills in his faux bosom.
Ta-Nehisi Coates WTF
Episode 878 of Marc David Maron’s WTF podcast features Ta-Nehisi Paul Coates. Chamblee54 recently wrote about a video featuring Mr. Coates. This seems like a good day to listen to the show, and take notes. The spell check suggestion for Ta-Nehisi is Ta-Nemesis.
The show starts with TNPC and MDM (Is Ta-Nehisi two words?) discussing the business of writing books. The word black is not heard until 28:33 of the show. At 31 minutes in TNDC is talking about when he moved to New York, and struggled. He mentions that when you lie to other people, you begin to accept yourself as a liar. It occurs to PG that this is a problem with calling yourself n****r. You begin to accept yourself as this loathsome thing, and settle for being a n****r.
At 53 minutes, TNDC is talking about sexual harassment, and how he… a man … could never know what a woman experiences. MDM says that he … a white man … could never know what a black man feels, and how the books by TNDC made MDM realize this. You get the sense that this is what MDM wanted to talk about all along, and that TNDC is TIRED OF TALKING ABOUT RACE. In a sense, it is a moment of what you might call well meaning liberal racism. MDM had the prominent black intellectual on the show, and MDM was going to talk about race, whether PBI wanted to or not.
At 1:02 pm est, the show is over. PG has more respect for TNDC now. Most of the show was about fatherhood, writing, and the struggle to succeed. The expressions whiteness, and white supremacy, were not heard. Pictures today are from The Library of Congress. Many of them were edited while listening to this show. The depression was a different era.
Further Tales of the City
PG finally read Further Tales of the City. The yard sale casualty, read after sitting on a bookshelf for years, was the third volume in the Armistead Maupin series. PG has written about other TOTC books recently: Whales of the city, More Tales Of The City
FTOTC is not a documentary, even if one of the characters is a doctor. (Documentary is where u are between the doc and the men.) The gynecologist, Jon Fielding, is reunited with Michael Tolliver, the centerpiece queen of the TOTC. Dr. Fielding will die of AIDS between book three and book four. FTOTC is set in 1981, when the rumors got too loud to dismiss.
Another 1981 moment involves a movie star, known only as ____ _____ . He appears throughout FTOTC. After his engagement to Gomer Pyle was off, ____ _____ shacked up with Ned Lockwood. After that bit the dust, Ned moved to San Francisco, and became pals with Michael Tolliver. ____ _____ invites the bois to a Hollywood party, where Michael gets to know ____ _____ .
A book report should mention the plot. DeDe Day returns from Jonestown, and Mary Ann Singleton is hired to tell the story. … One chapter is titled “Dede Day’s D-Day” … This is starting to be too much work. If you want to hear the story, read the book. There may be a tv show about it, if you prefer to consume story product that way.
Maybe we can just document the beginning, and the end. In the first chapter, Anna Madrigal, the landlady for many TOTC players, is luxuriating in the glory of a San Francisco spring. At the end, a society columnist leaves a shack in the park. She looks up to see a policeman, and a priest, coming out of the bushes. All four have sheepish looks.
One Star Reviews are essential to online book reports. Not worth the time. Zero stars By Kindle Customer There is nothing redeeming or enlightening in this book. It is a sad commentary on a lifestyle that creates so many problems, and in a lot of cases, ultimately sadness. I bought this book by mistake and felt compelled to read it because I bought it. For me, it was a complete waste of time. ! 1.0 out of 5 starsAbysmal By Pauline Butcher Bird If literature is one end of the scale, then whatever is the other end, this is it. A group of cardboard characters intermix in 1970s San Francisco. They have no lives but to eat, drink, have sex and take drugs together. Page after page of dreary dialogue that is easily skipped through. My book group’s choice, but even with that demand, I gave up after 40 per cent. If anyone can tell me it gets better after that, I’d like to know.
Armistead Maupin, the author of FTOTC, and possible model for Michael Tolliver, has moved from writing fiction about made up characters to autobiography. With fiction, you know it is all made up. The memoir, Logical Family, is readily available. One day, PG will find it at the library.
Logical Family: An Evening with Armistead Maupin is a recent rado show. Mr. Maupin “reads from his funny, poignant and unflinchingly honest memoir, in the company of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.” The first five minutes are special. The author makes a dramatic statement, and the orchestra kicks in with “Overture to Gone With The Wind.” You have to hear it for yourself. Pictures today are from “The Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library”.
Horses On Drugs
Today’s feature is a repost from 2014. Awful Library Books is still going strong. One of their current favorites is Teen-ager, Christ is for You. Bad books about religion will always be with us. Pictures are from “The Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library”.
Awful library books is one of the actors in this drama. It is a good waste of your time. On top of the shelf today is Lee the Rabbit with Epilepsy. Other uplifting volumes on the front page include Isn’t One Wife Enough?: the Story of Mormon Polygamy and When Cavemen Go Bowling.
The book that Awful Library Books chose to “weed” was Latawnya, the Naughty Horse, Learns to Say “No” to Drugs. The links in the original post no longer work, so google was enlisted to find a replacement. Believe it or not, this galloping tale has a wikipedia page.
The original book was targeted at African American youth. The author has daughters named Latawnya and Chrystal. The author has sued amazon, wikipedia, and urban dictionary.
A possibly illegal reproduction is found using the link. One of the comments tells a cautionary tale: ” It seems that many of these comments are viciously lampooning the work of a genius. I, however, see the visionary work of Mrs. Gibson. This insightful masterpiece presents the very real dangers of horse peer pressure. Just last week my daughter, Amber, was walking to school on a normal, idyllic day in suburbia. Then out of nowhere a Clydesdale galloped brazenly over to my precious princess and offered her a 40 oz bottle of Olde English 800 and a marijuana cigarette.”
Clydesdales have long been used to promote the products of the Anheuser-Busch company. (When you click on that link, a page pops up: WE NEED TO CHECK YOUR ID YOU MUST BE OF LEGAL DRINKING AGE TO ENTER THIS SITE) When PG was younger, he worked on the mall maintenance crew at Northlake Mall. One day, the Budweiser Clydesdales made a visit. PG was given a shovel and bucket, and told to walk behind the horses.
One of the reasons for the drug problem is drug education. Many of these programs, while well intentioned, make the problem worse.
Courtesy of Awfullibrarybooks, we can see today “LATAWNYA, the Naughty Horse, Learns to say “No” to Drugs“. This uplifting story is about the afternoon when Latawnya goes out to play with her sisters Daisy and LaToya. Suddenly they meet four strange horses, Connie, Chrystal, Jackie, and Angie. They like to drink and smoke drugs.
The author of this tale was born in Mississippi, and lives in California. She says “Thank you, G-d”.
In 1986, there was an oversupply of cocaine coming into America, and new ways of using the product were needed. Someone had the idea of making crack. The media did its part, by running scare stories about the new drug sensation. “One puff makes your head feel like it is exploding”. The stories had the combined effect of scaring parents, and making crack cocaine irresistible to certain people. Crack became a part of the life.
The first time PG heard about oxycontin was a drug education flyer at work. It promised an overwhelming rush to the user who injected the substance. PG imagined the reaction of some of the druggies he had known to this promise…where can I get some?
PG is in the detoxed, old fogey stage of his life. Millions of others are not. When they read stories about horses who drink and smoke drugs, they learn to believe the opposite of what the drug educators tell them. Many will not live to be detoxed old fogeys.
