Divine Intervention
A strange thing happened on my walk this morning. I was listening to this show about David Foster Wallace. It was a dystopian commentary, about a lot of different things. One of the chief problems is the general f***** up nature of the medical industrial complex.
I was about to turn around, and do another lap, when the phone rang. I decided to take a chance, and answer the call. The call was a lady calling from the sleep disorder clinic. Some of the Medicare claims had been rejected. I went back into the house, got my reading glasses, and woke up the computer. I got a new Medicare card last December, and apparently the sleep disorder clinic never got the new Medicare number. It was synchronistic that I would answer this call, and that it would be an illustration of the story I was listening to.
I had a similar experience a while back. I was riding on the exercise bike at the gym, while watching Female Trouble by John Samuel Waters. FT was just so strange. I was being pulled into this narcatonic vortex that JSW induces in people. He will render them mentally incompetent by the facilitation of “Divine intervention.” In this scene, Divine chopped a ladies arm off, and held her prisoner in a giant birdcage. At this point in the procedure, I get a spam risk phone call. I decided what the hell, life is so much fun right now, what’s another spam phone call?
So I answer the call. It’s from Piedmont Care Connect. PCC was this program that my primary doctor wanted to sign me up for. You would pay to have a PCC blood pressure monitor installed in your house. The device would transmit the BP readings to Piedmont heathcare. I was very skeptical of the whole thing. I got even more skeptical when I talked to the people from the program, because they didn’t know what they were doing. I had already told them not to call me again. After I hung up the phone, I learned that Divine was going to prison, for her crimes against hairstyling.
So yesterday went on and on and finally ended. I listened to the last of the story about Dave Wallace. I was pleased to get to the part about gnosticism. I wanted to listen to it again because I thought I might have missed something the last time. Later, I read a piece about Yahweh. (I did not copy the link). It seems that Yahweh was a minor Israeli God, until there was a hostile takeover of the whole system. Yahweh then issued the Ten Commandments, saying that I am the only God. It is very curious that I never heard this. All Christians ever talk about is life after death.
Meanwhile, the gnostics were saying that Yahweh was the demiurge, or the anti-god. If you go by the Old Testament, there may be a grain of truth to this. You don’t really hear much about God in the New Testament, which is mostly about Jesus, the illegitimate son of Yahweh. … The second thing that I find really bizarre about Yahweh is that two of the nicknames for Yahweh are Allah and God. You heard that right … Allah and God are the same thing.
It is now 121225. When I get up and moving … slowly … I turn on the noise machine, to provide background sounds. Inevitably, I will need to turn it off, so I can hear something else. Today, the first turnoff of the day was a 23 second video about how to pronounce bhagavad gita. To pronounce BG, remember that the h should be after the a, instead of before. BAH ga vahd GE tuh. It is similar to saying Bah Humbug. … Pictures today are from The Library of Congress. Jack Delano took the social media picture in August 1942. “Nashville, Tennessee. Welding parts for fuel pumps. Slow Service Night
What follows is the story of my wednesday night. On certain wednesdays, a meditation group meets at a house in town. In this group, after sitting, the meditators journal. This is what I came up with: These coca cola pens don’t last very long. I have already retired one, and this one is not long for the world · I hear a lot about mindfulness, and yet don’t really know what it means. Maybe the phrase should be mindemptyness · The world is so bright when I pull the mask off. I turned to my bag, and got out my pen and paper, and never thought to look up to my right. When I did, after a few minutes, I saw Ashley, which was a bit surprising · This coaster is an octogon, with uneven sides. It is one inch squares, four inches wide, with four blocks cut in half in the corners.
I googled mindemptyness, and saw this was not an original thought. Google has several links for ME. Once you brave the popups and cookie alerts, you can find this: “Practice meditation and mindfulness as a means of getting to mindemptyness (ie, the Monkey Mind is calmed)”. You should open the door to your thoughts, but do not serve them tea.
Eventually, it was time to go home, including a stop at Burger King. In the drive through, I dictated the next part of our story: I’m in the Drive-Thru of the Burger King on North Druid Hills Road. I come here on my way home from meditation. This is what I do when I’m in this area. I go by here, or the Taco Bell on Buford Highway, to get junk food. The last time I was in here, I got three Whopper Juniors for $7. This was too much. Tonight, I’m only going to get two. It’s better to get less food than you think need, than more.
I’m listening to this monolog. It’s about David Foster Wallace and Derek Swanson. They are going to talk about gnosticism later on, which is one of the reasons I’m listening to this a second time. I listen to very few stories twice, especially when I have to download the MP4, and run it through a device to extract the MP3 sound, so that I can play it on my device.
It’s such a thrill to go into town these days. I see things that were never there. I’ve heard about this place on Cheshire Bridge Road. It’s a novelty shop, and it’s got this ruby red shoe that you walk through to get in there. I’m not really sure what it was, but it’s across the street from The Colonnade Restaurant, and the now closed Cheshire Motor Inn.
North Druid Hills has always been a busy street. They’ve been tearing it up now because they built a hospital. They’re doing a lot of work on I-85 to get there. It’s a big mess right now. NDH has never been an easy street to drive on. I only come here at night, when I’m not really sure of where I’m going, and I just go through it, and hope for the best, get through, and go on to Buford Highway which is another f***** up road, which is more f***** up now than it’s ever been.
I’ve spent about 5 minutes saying this, and that one car ahead of me hasn’t moved. The device quit taking dictation. I’ve been talking so long, it just put this red notice on the screen, and told me I’d been talking too long. Imagine that. The car that was ahead of me finally pulled off. Am I going to have to wait another 10 minutes? I don’t know why this is taking so long. … The car in front of me has this thing around his license plate saying Phi Beta Sigma. I think that’s one of those black fraternities.
That is it for the drive through narration. BK seemed to be having a slow service night. I eventually got my Whopper Juniors, and went home. I put them in the microwave for 93 seconds, which improved the taste. Pictures today are from The Library of Congress. Stanford Bad Words List
This content was posted December 24, 2022. … Elimination of Harmful Language Initiative arrived on a slow news day this week. Produced by a committee at Stanford University, the document lists some language that we should not be using. The screed got an unkind reaction, and was hidden from the general population. Fortunately, some thoughtful archivists saved a copy.
EHLI comes in a three part format. First is the contraindicated phrase. Second is a suggested alternative, and third is a commentary. The replacement is usually longer, and clumsier, than the original. Is “died by suicide” really any better than “committed suicide”?
abusive relationship … relationship with an abusive person … The relationship doesn’t commit abuse. A person does, so it is important to make that fact clear.
African-American … Black … Black people who were born in the United States can interpret hyphenating their identity as “othering.” As with many of the terms we’re highlighting, some people do prefer to use/be addressed by this term, so it’s best to ask a person which term they prefer to have used when addressing them. When used to refer to a person, the “b” should always be capitalized.
American … US Citizen … This term often refers to people from the US only, thereby insinuating that the US is the most important country in the Americas (which is actually made up of 42 countries).
brown bag … lunch and learn, tech talk … Historically associated with the “brown paper bag test” that certain Black sororities and fraternities used to judge skin color. Those whose skin color was darker than the brown bag were not allowed to join.
gangbusters … very successful … Unnecessarily invokes the notion of police action against “gangs” in a positive light, which may have racial undertones.
Hispanic … Latinx, use country of origin … Although widely used to describe people from Spanish-speaking countries outside of Spain, its roots lie in Spain’s colonization of South American countries. Instead of referring to someone as Hispanic because of their name or appearance, ask them how they identify themselves first.
Karen … demanding or entitled White woman … This term is used to ridicule or demean a certain group of people based on their behaviors.
people of color (used generically) … BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) … If speaking about a specific group, name that group.
“preferred” pronouns … pronouns … The word “preferred” suggests that non-binary gender identity is a choice and a preference.
shemale … transgender woman, trans woman … This slur is often used disparagingly to refer to people who don’t conform to gender expectations. Some in the community do identify with and self-describe as the term, though.
straight … heterosexual … Implies that anyone who is not heterosexual is bent or not “normal.”
stupid … boring, uncool … Once used to describe a person who could not speak and implied the person was incapable of expressing themselves.
tranny, trannie … transgender person, trans or non-gendering conforming folk … This slur is often used disparagingly to refer to people who don’t conform to gender expectations. Some in the community do identify with and self-describe as the term, though.
uppity … arrogant, stuck up … Although the term originated in the Black community to describe another Black person who didn’t know their socioeconomic place, it was quickly adopted by White Supremacists to describe any Black person who didn’t act as “expected.”
In several of the categories, you are invited to ask the person how they wish to be identified. This reinforces the “otherness” of people in these categories. English speaking White people are assumed to be the norm, and in no need of categorization. This is precisely the privilege that initiatives like the EHLI purport to be fighting, when in reality they do the opposite.
“Karen … demanding or entitled White woman …” Many of the banned words claim to be fighting the white=good trope. In the case of Karen, EHLI goes in the other direction, suggesting “entitled White woman” as an alternative. At least EHLI capitalized White. EHLI also capitalized “Latinx,” while leaving “country of origin” in lower case.
EHLI is clearly … all commentaries on social justice issues must say clearly … the work of a committee. They … assuming that is the correct pronoun here … have good intentions. Unfortunately, as we all know in 2022, it is outcome that is important, and not intentions. Maybe someone should just yell bingo, and go cash in their card. Hypertension Industrial Complex
This content was posted December 12, 2020. … Prescription medication is a part of life. Most of mine deal with hypertension, aka high blood pressure. According to this website, hypertension is the number one co-morbidity for covid-19. It is helpful to take care of this.
I go to a doctor, who sends a script to the pharmacy. The doctor is part of a hospital/medical company. All the stages of this procedure are regulated, and financed, by an insurance company. Since I am over 65, this means medicare, or another layer of nonsense. I will use nick names today. The doctor/hospital is Curly. The pharmacy is Larry. The insurance company is Moe.
Once a year, I go see Curly. He takes a blood sample, and a few instrument readings. Curly sees that I have not died yet, and approves my medications for another year. I did this a few weeks ago.
Friday afternoon, I called Moe. The idea is to get a 90 day supply of the meds. After wading through Moe’s telephone system, and waiting on hold, I am directed to a telephone operator. I tell Moe what scripts I want to order.
I say carefully, and repeatedly, that I want these medications shipped mail order. It is cheaper, and easier, than going to see Larry in person. For some reason, this point often gets lost when medical machines try to work together. I say, over and over, send the meds by mail order. Unfortunately, this is prescription renewal time. Moe needs to call Curly, to confirm that the prescription is valid. Between Curly, Larry, and Moe, something is going to get screwed up.
The call to Moe takes place on friday afternoon. All goes well until 7:41 pm, when a text arrives from Larry. The prescriptions are ready for pickup. The script was sent to the pharmacy, not the mail order house. Buying hypertension medication can make your blood pressure go up.
Larry has an especially stupid phone system. I finally get to talk to a pharmacist. She explains that Curly sent them the prescription, and there is nothing that can be done about it.
This is blood pressure medication. This is not something that people take to have fun. This is boring old amlodipine and benezapril. If something this basic can get screwed up, I can only imagine what would happen with a complicated illness like cancer, or HIV. The idea that Larry is going to distribute the covid vaccine is cause for great concern.
The next step is to call Moe. The phone menu is having a bad day, and asks me to repeat my account number twice. Finally, I get through to a lady, who speaks with a serious accent. The lady asks me to repeat the account number one more time. The lady says that Curly sent the script to Larry, and there is nothing Moe can do about it. I am beyond angry.
It is now friday night. Curly has quit doing business. I will have to wait until Monday morning. Curly has an obnoxious phone system of his own. Curly is a giant bureaucracy. I have no idea who to talk to about this. I just have to wait until Monday morning, call the phone number, and hope for the best. Sometimes, if the first attempt does not work, then the second try will turn out better.
Eventually, this is going to work out. It has so far every time in the past. It can be frustrating, though, and scary. This is a non emergency situation. What would happen if I had to deal with the institutional shadiness of Curly/Larry/Moe, when every second counts?
2025 Update: I now repeatedly tell the doctor to send the drugs by the mail order pharmacy. The last time I had to deal with the local pharmacy, the phone system was so dysfunctional that I do all my business in person. … Pictures today are from The Library of Congress. Coleman Hughes V. Darryl Cooper
Coleman Cruz Hughes recently did a show attacking Nicholas Joseph Fuentes. While going after NJF, CCH went on the attack against Darryl Cooper. Both NJF and DC are critics of Israel’s dirty wars, which might be the ultimate motivation for these attacks.
NJF is a gnarly piece of work, who is currently getting plenty of bad press. Darryl Cooper is different. I am a fan of the MartyrMade podcast. Earlier this year I did a deep dive into “Fear and Loathing in the New Jerusalem”. The chamblee54 commentary is linked here.
I disagree with DC about many things, including his notorious comment about Winston Churchill. However, I have mad respect for MartyrMade podcast. Does DC make mistakes? Maybe. If you produce 27 hours of content on a subject, you probably will get some things wrong. Especially when you consider that a lot of these matters have two hotly contested sides.
DC made an infamous appearance on the Tucker Carlson show, saying that Winston Churchill was the primary villain of World War II. CCH mentioned it, of course. CCH then quoted a story from Mother Jones, How a Nazi-Obsessed Amateur Historian Went From Obscurity to the Top of Substack. (CCH does not have show notes. Fortunately, google still works when it wants to.)
As it turns out, I recently listened to a MM episode about Mother Jones, the historic figure. “Whose America” is about the coal wars in West Virginia. The show features a picture of Mother Jones with red coals in her eyes. “The magazine Mother Jones is directly named after the legendary labor activist Mary Harris “Mother” Jones, who was a fierce organizer for workers’ rights in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, inspiring the magazine’s focus on progressive causes and investigative journalism.” Sometimes, “progressive causes” include discrediting a podcaster who is critical of Israel.
The MJ story is a hit job, with very few links. This quote sets the tone: “Cooper, for example, wrote “Guten morgen” to a user on X last August, along with a picture of himself holding a coffee mug. It might take a moment to realize the user is a self-identified Nazi, and the mug Cooper holds is sold on a website where you can buy a T-shirt in which a Nazi SS sword plunges through the Star of David.”
Later, MJ ties DC to David Irving, a notorious holocaust denier. In the Carlson interview, DC mentioned that Winston Churchill had financial problems, and was bailed out by Zionist financiers. This information is easily available from other sources. However, DC did mention that he found this information in Irving’s writings. After making this connection … without linking to the source … MJ rants about David Irving for several paragraphs.
There is one quote from MJ about David Irving that is remarkable: “Irving is essentially an ideologue who uses history for his own political purposes; he is not primarily concerned with discovering and interpreting what happened in the past, he is concerned merely to give a selective and tendentious account of it in order to further his own ideological ends in the present.”
If you were to take out “Irving” and put a blank space in its spot, you could describe a substantial percentage of the rhetoric mongers today. It would definitely apply to Coleman Hughes. … Pictures today are from The Library of Congress. Jack Delano took the social media picture in August 1941. “The family of Mr. Dan Sampson. What BHO Said About Gaza In 2008
This content was published December 30, 2008. … There is a war going on in the Gaza Strip. BHO and GWB are on vacation. In the case of GWB, this is probably for the best. Meanwhile, BHO is dodging the hot potato in Gaza, and hoping the inauguration can be moved back to March 4.
BHO has a dandy website, change.gov. A big part of it is devoted to his agenda. It is interesting to see what this says about foreign policy. The first section is about the “greatest threat” to America. To BHO, this is the resurgence of the Taliban and Al Queda. The call is for increased troop levels in Afghanistan. As for the ticking time bomb (with nukes) in Pakistan, there is one sentence … ” Obama and Biden will increase nonmilitary aid to Pakistan and hold them accountable for security in the border region with Afghanistan”
The next section is about the “gravest danger” (as opposed to greatest threat). This refers to the spread of nuclear weapons. There is no mention of Israel getting rid of its nukes. … Skipping over “Iran” and “Energy Security”, we get to the section “Renewing American Diplomacy”. The third “bullet point” is the Israeli Palestinian conflict. “Obama and Biden will make progress on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict a key diplomatic priority from day one. They will make a sustained push — working with Israelis and Palestinians — to achieve the goal of two states, a Jewish state in Israel and a Palestinian state, living side by side in peace and security.”
The next section is Israel. At this point we see where BHO’s heart lies. This is directly related to what his campaign contributors have told him to think. “Barack Obama and Joe Biden strongly support the U.S.-Israel relationship, and believe that our first and incontrovertible commitment in the Middle East must be to the security of Israel, America’s strongest ally in the region. They support this closeness, and have stated that the United States will never distance itself from Israel.
During the July 2006 Lebanon war, Barack Obama stood up strongly for Israel’s right to defend itself from Hezbollah raids and rocket attacks, cosponsoring a Senate resolution against Iran and Syria’s involvement in the war, and insisting that Israel should not be pressured into a ceasefire that did not deal with the threat of Hezbollah missiles. He and Joe Biden believe strongly in Israel’s right to protect its citizens. … Barack Obama and Joe Biden have consistently supported foreign assistance to Israel. They defend and support the annual foreign aid package that involves both military and economic assistance to Israel and have advocated increased foreign aid budgets to ensure that these funding priorities are met. They have called for continuing U.S. cooperation with Israel in the development of missile defense systems.”
The Israel fact sheet has this: “Barack Obama and Joe Biden believe in working towards a two-state solution, with both states living side by side in peace and security. To that end, Senators Obama and Biden are cosponsors of the Palestinian Anti-Terrorism Act of 2006. Introduced in the wake of Hamas’ victory in the Palestinian elections, this act outlaws direct assistance to any entity of the Palestinian Authority controlled by Hamas until it meets the conditions of the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations to renounce violence, recognize Israel, and agree to abide by all agreements signed by the Palestinian Authority.“
Operation Cast Lead was the 2008 tragedy in Gaza. “Hamas won the 2006 Palestinian legislative council elections. Following its election victory, the United States, European Union and Israel imposed severe economic sanctions on the Palestinian territories. … In June 2008, Egypt brokered a six-month ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. Hamas promised to halt rocket attacks while Israel agreed to ease an embargo that had stopped humanitarian aid from getting through, and to stop military raids into Gaza. On November 4, 2008, Israel launched a military incursion into a residential area of Dayr al-Balah in Central Gaza in an attempt to arrest Hamas members. Israel insisted that this was not a violation of the ceasefire. After several weeks of repeated flare-ups in violence, Hamas announced the end of its truce with Israel. … The Gaza war, also known as Operation Cast Lead, began on December 27, 2008. Israel immediately launched a widespread aerial bombing campaign, targeting more than 100 locations in the densely-populated Gaza Strip, including residential homes, police stations, schools, United Nations buildings, and hospitals. An Israeli ground assault was launched on January 3, 2009. During the operation, Israeli forces fired shells containing white phosphorus, an illegal weapon that burns indiscriminately. The conflict ended in a unilateral Israeli-declared ceasefire on January 18”
BHO became POTUS on January 20, 2009, and served two full terms. His foreign policy was one of the worst parts of his administration. Israel conducted Operation Pillar of Defense in 2012, and Operation Protective Edge in 2014. Thousands of Gazans were killed, and Israel did not become safer. The dirty war in Syria started under BHO, with Al-Queda as our ally. The Maidan Revolution took place in Ukraine, leading to the current war with Russia. Ukraine was not mentioned on the foreign policy page. … Pictures today are from The Library of Congress. John Vachon took the social media picture in May 1940. “Hands

Esoteric and Pedantic
This content was published November 18, 2021. … There is something to be said for wanting to speak up, but not having anything to say. To prove that, I am going to talk about a word…esoteric. According to Wiktionary, esoteric is :”1. Having to do with concepts that are highly theoretical and without obvious practical application. 2. Understood only by a chosen few or an inner circle.”
The “E word” plays a role in a story from 10th grade English. We were discussing a story, “The Rocking Horse Winner”, by D.H. Lawrence. The story was boring and obscure, just like most of what I have seen by Mr. Lawrence.
The summer after 10th grade I worked in a movie theater. The ushers wore ghastly yellow uniforms, and saw the movies over and over. When I started, the Lenox Square 2 theater was showing “Women in Love”, based on a novel by D.H. Lawrence. Glenda Jackson copped an oscar for her portrayal of Gudrun Brangwen, and young Larry Kramer was one of the screenwriters. It did not improve my opinion of D.H. Lawrence. If the censors had not touched “Lady Chatterly’s Lover”, D.H. Lawrence would be forgotten today.
Back to 10th grade english. We were discussing this wretched story, and a girl raised her hand. Why would any author write something so esoteric? The teacher had never heard of this word before, and was amazed to hear it.
The Lenox Square 2 theater was a long, slender thing with a small screen. This was in 1970. The multiplex concept had not matured. LS2 was under a grocery store. When their automatic door openers operated, you could hear the motors in the theater below. The movies the rest of the summer were Fellini Satyricon, The Christine Jorgenson Story, and The Landlord.
Back to esoteric…or did I ever go away? Before you can understand esoteric, you must plumb the depths of pedantic “1. Like a pedant, overly concerned with formal rules and trivial points of learning. 2. Being showy of one’s knowledge, often in a boring manner. 3. Often used to describe a person who emphasizes his/her knowledge through the use of vocabulary; ostentatious in one’s learning. 4. Being finicky or picky with language.”
Pedantic is an adjective that describes itself. The technical term for this is autological. Here is a poem using autological words. Pictures today are from The Library of Congress. Marion Post Wolcott took the social media picture in May 1939.

Tom Watson
This content was published November 15, 2008. … There is a twelve foot tall statue of Tom Watson in front of the steps to the Georgia State Capital. It is on the west side, looking at Central Avenue and Atlanta City Hall. The green metal likeness of Mr. Watson, with his left arm raised in rhetorical combat, has seen many things over the years.
Today, there was a rally for the right of same sex couples to marry. The expression on the statue did not change during the event. One suspects that the anti-Catholic crusader would have been amused by the call for the church to mind its own business. The rally was a happy, friendly event. There have been reports of racial unrest at previous Prop 8 rallies, but that was not seen by this reporter. In fact, the best costume of the day was worn by a black lady. Another black lady spoke, and said “we are not fighting hate, we are fighting ignorance.”
UPDATE: In 2013, the statue of Tom Watson was moved to Georgia Plaza Park. On June 26, 2015, Obergefell v. Hodges was issued. The Supreme Court ruling “requires a state to license a marriage between two people of the same sex.”
Thomas Edward Watson was a piece of work. TEW rose to fame as a Populist politician, fighting for issues that I don’t understand 140 years later. At some point, TEW became a well known hater of Black people, Catholics, and Jews. TEW was a prominent rabble rouser in the Leo Frank case. Later, he opposed the entry of the United States into World War One.
“The test of this belief was not long in coming. Watson’s campaign for reelection to Congress in 1892 was opposed by powerful conservative Democrats who were determined to keep him out of Washington. His district was gerrymandered and his life was threatened; many of his speeches were made from platforms surrounded by armed Populist guards. Because he solicited the black vote and frequently shared the platform with black speakers, he was accused of undermining white supremacy and of being a socialist. When a young black minister supporting Watson was threatened, a call went out to the countryside, producing, as Watson pointed out in an editorial, a spectacle very rare indeed in Georgia, “the sight of white farmers riding all night to save a Negro from lynching.”… During the 1892 campaign Watson published “The Negro Question in the South” in a national magazine, The Arena (October 1892), presenting the Populist view that the ruling elite encourages animosity between the races in order to keep them from joining forces in pursuit of political power; the poor, he said, would be better advised to put class interests above racial interests.”
“Probably more important was his stand against American intervention in World War I, which he blamed on “ravenous commercialism.” He carried on a vigorous campaign against conscription until the U.S. Post Office banned his publications, and he ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1918 and in the presidential primary of 1920 on a platform endorsing the restoration of civil liberties revoked during wartime and American rejection of the League of Nations. Elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in 1920, he briefly returned to his old ideals, showing support for the Soviet Union and organized labor. He died two years into his term, at the age of sixty-six, of a stroke brought on by severe attacks of bronchial asthma.”
“Not long before the Frank lynching, Watson was calling himself “a red socialist through and through” and risking imprisonment for opposition to U.S. participation in World War I. In terms of the relative importance of the demons that beset his imagination, it was notable that he saved his most violent hostility for … Woodrow Wilson, the “insufferable prig” he viewed as championing the interests of capitalist elites.” … Pictures today are from The Library of Congress. War On Christmas
This content was published November 27, 2008. … I was in a hostel, in Brunswick GA. Before dinner, everyone had to say something they were thankful for. I was ready to eat. When it was my turn, I said “I would like to thank all of you at this meeting who keep their comments down to a short sentence.” … Muskrat has suggested that people say five things they are grateful for. That sounds fair enough. · I am grateful for good health, at least below the neck. I have had a few close calls over the years, but somehow made it to 54.
I am grateful for the ability to think. Some things I believe, some I don’t. I try not to be a sheep. · I am grateful that America is going to have a change in leadership at the top. I am not optimistic that much will change, at least not right away. Nonetheless, the fact that we can have this change through a peaceful election instead of a bloody revolution says good things about America. · I am grateful for the advances in technology that allow me to share this gratitude with the world. I am also glad that the world has the freedom to ignore this if they choose.
This content was published November 28, 2008. … The day after thanksgiving is the official start of the christmas season. The last few years, I have grown weary of the turf fighting. Christians like to think that they are the only ones entitled to a holiday. It gets nasty. … The truth is, as long as I remember, Christmas has been a secular holiday, with a religious element. The parties and gift giving are a great way to wind up the year. The so called birth of Jesus really has very little to do with it.
In the early days of christianism, the pagan romans had a major celebration around the winter solstice. This is the longest night, and the end of the annual cycle of birth, death, and revival. The early Christians decided to have a comparable celebration. It is uncertain when Jesus was technically born, and many scholars today believe that it was sometime in the spring.
For a long time, I was able to ignore the religious hoopla, and focus on the joy of the season. In recent years, Christians have made more of an issue out of the “War on Christmas”. Bill O’Reilly, with his instinct for a divisive issue, has been a ringleader. Where once the secular and religious people could celebrate a happy season together … and, truth be told, many still do … there is now a conflict. The Christmas make an exclusive claim to the festivities, and those who don’t agree with them are out of luck. It has become a fighting issue whether to say happy holidays or merry christmas. I would like to get back to peace on earth, and good will towards men.

Tony Hovater
New York Times reporter Richard Fausset went to smalltown Ohio to meet Tony Hovater. “In 2015, he helped start the Traditionalist Worker Party, one of the extreme right-wing groups that marched in Charlottesville, Va. … The mission is to “fight for the interests of White Americans.’’
Virtual America is not pleased. Twitter screeds by @magi_jay and @bessbell have been widely shared. This facebook comment speaks for many: “The article serves to humanize and normalize him/far-right extremism/Nazism — which was one of Tony Havater’s stated desires/goals re: his present involvement in the white nationalist/Nazi movement. By normalizing them, they are given a seat at the table of political discourse which is absolutely a back-asswards step.”
When you see a tweetstorm like this, the first step is to find the original material. Read the article, not what @ShaunKing says about it. When you read the original, you wonder if it is the same article. The original is full of snide references, and logical fallacies. Maybe what the masses want is a ritual denunciation of the anointed poopyhead. As one online publication put it, “ensure that white supremacists and Nazis are thought of and treated the same way you might treat a roach scurrying across a kitchen counter.” Lets look at some quotes from the NYT article.
“Mr. Hovater’s face is narrow and punctuated with sharply peaked eyebrows, like a pair of air quotes, and he tends to deliver his favorite adjective, “edgy,” with a flat affect and maximum sarcastic intent. It is a sort of implicit running assertion that the edges of acceptable American political discourse — edges set by previous generations, like the one that fought the Nazis — are laughable.”
The previous generations of America are a mixed bag. Yes, they fought the Germans in WW2. They also fought Native Americans, and said “the only good Indian is a dead Indian.” “The edges of acceptable American political discourse” once included Jim Crow laws. American political discourse is an ever-changing work in progress.
“After he attended the Charlottesville rally, in which a white nationalist plowed his car into a group of left-wing protesters, killing one of them, Mr. Hovater wrote that he was proud of the comrades who joined him there: “We made history. Hail victory.” In German, “Hail victory” is “Sieg heil.””
James Alex Fields is accused of killing Heather Meyer with a Dodge Challenger. We don’t know if he was acting on orders, where those orders came from, or if he is a loose cannon, acting on his own. While the march organizers certainly bear some responsibility for that tragedy, we do not know the entire story. In any event, that has nothing to do with the German translation of “Hail Victory.”
I Interviewed a White Nationalist and Fascist. What Was I Left With? was published after the backlash hit. It is a commentary by the author, in which he laments not finding the “rosebud” to this story. There is a revealing quote near the end. “I saw, on his bookshelf, two volumes of Helena Blavatsky’s “The Secret Doctrine,” 19th-century work of esoteric spiritualism whose anti-Semitism influenced Nazi thinking. But even if I had called Mr. Hovater yet again — even if we had discussed Blavatsky at length, the way we did his ideas about the Federal Reserve Bank — I’m not sure it would have answered the question. What makes a man start fires?”
Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (Еле́на Петро́вна Блава́тская) is a 19th century Russian that few people know about. This obscurity allows Mr. Fausset to fill in the blanks with a gratuitous comment about anti-Semitism. This inclusion also assumes that Mr. Hovater has read the books.
The reference to the Federal Reserve Bank is more telling. If you listen to this podcast, you learn that Mr. Hovater is more concerned with economics than white nationalism. You will also learn that many of his ideas are not well thought out. Mr. Hovater, a former drummer in a heavy metal band, is similar to that libertarian in the break room … the one who will not shut up, and go back to work.
Saying Tony Hovater is poorly informed will not satisfy the keyboard warrior. Talking about economics is not as much fun as denouncing the Third Reich … as if the LARP-tikitorch crowd is the same as the Schutzstaffel. SJW twitter does not like subtlety. This is what they want to hear: “Of course, profiles on the people directly harmed by this hate speech and violence would be much more compelling. But that would require whiteness—white maleness, specifically—to be uncentered. And uncentering whiteness is harder than eating just one Lay’s potato chip, apparently.”
