Rachel Maddow On Gaza
Rachel Anne Maddow is the personification of so much that is wrong about american media. Her polemic pushing is entertaining to millions of people. She does for the left what the blowdrys at Fox do for the right. It is the information equivalent of eating all your meals at Burger King.
UN calls Gaza destruction by Israel ‘tragedy of colossal proportions’ This feature will not look at the Palestinian horror from a perspective of Team Israel or Team Gaza. Instead, we will consider what Rachel Maddow, a media actor trusted by millions, says about the war in Gaza.
I am cable challenged, and do not watch MSNBC. Youtube is little help. I have decided to go to facebook, where The Rachel Maddow Show posts several times a day. I scrolled back to December 12, and did not see one comment about Gaza.
@maddow is not especially active on twitter these days. If you go back to November 4, she retweets a video of Barack Obama. To his credit, Barry uses the word listen, although not as much as talk. Most of Barry’s remarks were about the complexity of the Gaza story. This is similar to Donald Trump saying there are “very fine people, on both sides.”
RAM is also on Instagram, where she posts mostly head shots. It is tough to quickly tell what she is talking about. Pictures today are from The Library of Congress
UPDATE I stumbled onto a quote from RAM about Gaza. “you can’t say, it doesn’t matter what the truth is here” The quote is from October 17, “Rachel Maddow and Nicolle Wallace react to the latest developments out of Gaza after the bombing of a hospital which has left hundreds dead.” 50 seconds after RAM says truth, Nicolle Wallace says “we … does not include Hamas terrorists. They don’t care what the truth is. … Hamas will use Palestinian civilians as human shields. Its what they do.”

The well meaning crew at BAR has produced their annual internet nonsense quiz. The dumbest online events of the year is not behind a paywall, loaded with popup ads and cookie disclaimers. TDOEOTY is of limited value, but a writing prompt is a writing prompt. Bari Weiss And Refaat Alareer
This might be a mistake. I am listening to blocked and reported #195 while trying to finish a poem. Certified poopyhead @bariweiss is one of the main topics today. The thought enters my pointed little head to take notes. Nothing good is going to come out of this.
Something happens at 8:33. Jesse … or is it Katie … is talking about a notorious twitter account @zei_squirrel. I pause the show, and look in the show notes for the url to zs. “You’re blocked You can’t follow or see @zei_squirrel’s posts.” There is nothing like going to an x account, for the first time, and learning you have been blocked.
The main story boils down to the question: did Bari Weiss order the IDF targeted assassination of Refaat Alareer? IMO, Bari does not have a buddy in the IDF that can arrange a targeted killing. When the IDF mows the lawn, they do not target a specific weed.
Bari does not get out of this unblemished. She has spewed out high octane rhetoric against Gaza for a long, long time. Take this quote from 2021.
“I am writing to you from the waiting room of my fertility clinic. Getting pregnant when you are gay is not so romantic, so we try to do little things to make it nice. Last night I took a bath. We watched “Mare of Easttown.” Nellie opened a bottle of red. Then she grabbed my stomach and gave me a shot to trigger ovulation.” Does Bari Weiss have a certain amount of privilege?
“I planned to take the morning off. The doctor says that stress is not good for baby-making. But sitting here, scrolling through my phone, looking at the tsunami of lies — lies that have permeated every Instagram story and every viral meme and every TikTok video and every popular Twitter account — I am weeping.” Bari Weiss enjoys over the top writing.
“It appears that standing up for the right of innocent people to protect themselves from a genocidal terrorist organization has become extremely risky to one’s “brand.” And so lies have replaced truth. Memes have replaced morality. Hashtags have replaced history. I’m speaking, of course, about Israel.”
When the killing was over in 2021, there were a lot more Gazans killed than Israelis. There is no way to tell how many of them were women and children, or how many were Hamas. Bari probably did not call her connection at the IDF to order Operation Wall Guardian. Her purple prose did help justify it. When you start a fire, you don’t get to say where it stops. … Wall Guardian is an ironic name for the 2021 operation. An alert wall guardian would have been helpful on October 7.

Cynic
“A cynic is a man who knows the price of everything, and the value of nothing.” ― Oscar Wilde. This quote is one of Oscar’s greatest hits. If you think about it for a minute, it is not totally accurate. You are not supposed to think. Quoting Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde is about sounding clever, not making sense. Did he really create that definition of a cynic? This is a repost.
Oscar Wilde is a quote magnet. This is more than something you put on your refrigerator. When people hear something clever, odds are good that Oscar will get the blame. As Dorothy Parker wrote: “If, with the literate, I am, Impelled to try an epigram, I never seek to take the credit; We all assume that Oscar said it. [Life Magazine, June 2, 1927]”
Wikiquote says this line is from Act III of Lady Windermere’s Fan. It was spoken by Lord Darlington. Did the play write intend for the line to be taken seriously, or was he making the character look foolish by saying it? With Oscar Wilde, it could be both of these things at the same time.
Principle Four, of the four principles of quotations, reads “Only quote from works that you have read.” In the case of Lady Windemere’s Fan, this would mean a youtube video of the play. There is a posh BBC production available. You don’t have to watch the cell phone recording of high school players.
Lady Windemere’s Fan is a production where upper class Brits say clever things in glorious costumes. Nobody ever goes to the bathroom, or looks less than perfect. Lady Windemere’s six month old child is neither seen, nor heard. Lady Windemere finds out her husband, Lord Windemere, is having an affair with a Mrs. Erlynne. The Lord proceeds to invite the floozy to Lady Windemere’s birthday party.
After the party, the men go to their club, then to Lord Darlington’s room. There are five men in the conversation, beginning with Lord Windemere. Lord Darlington has just told Lady Windemere that he loves her, and wants her to run off with him. Lady Windemere said no. Lord Augustus is a suitor of Mrs. Erlynne, and is begging her to marry him. Cecil Graham, and Mr. Dumby, wear their splendid costumes with conviction.
The scene starts with the men saying clever things, most of them insulting to someone. Lord Augustus, or Tuppy, is the butt of many jokes. Before long, we get this exchange:
Dumby. I don’t think we are bad. I think we are all good, except Tuppy.
Lord Darlington. No, we are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.
Dumby. We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars? Upon my word, you are very romantic to-night, Darlington.
Cecil Graham. Too romantic! You must be in love. Who is the girl?
Lord Darlington. The woman I love is not free, or thinks she isn’t. [Glances instinctively at Lord Windermere while he speaks.]
A few minutes later, we hear another famous Oscarism.

The Fall Of Minneapolis
The Fall of Minneapolis, a documentary about the death of George Perry Floyd, Jr. I have followed this case, along with the rest of America. Until recently I believed the conventional wisdom. Minneapolis police officer Derek Michael Chauvin put his knee on GPF’s neck for 8:46, and caused GPF to die. We are learning that the truth might be different.
I decided to watch TFOM, and write about it. I was also putting it off. Part of this process was finding things to include in my report. There was a report that said TFOM was conservatives pushing an agenda. Other people people have opinions on the matter. Finally, I heard The Truth about George Floyd’s Death with Glenn Loury and John Mcwhorter.
One thing I wanted was a copy of the autopsy report. Recently, parts of it have been released. The report shows high levels of Fentanyl and Methamphetamine in GPF’s system. I googled “George Floyd Autopsy,” and found a lot of commentary. Next, I did the same search on duckduckgo. The top result was the HENNEPIN COUNTY AUTOPSY REPORT ME NO.: 20-3700. The document clearly states “No life-threatening injuries identified.”
Finally, I ran out of excuses, and turned the show on. The first few minutes was body cam videos. It was downright fascinating. GPF was BOMBED. The store clerk commented on this in his 911 call, after GPF allegedly tried to pass a counterfeit twenty. The clerk then pointed to a parked car across the street, where GPF was sitting in the driver’s seat.
The parked car was not part of the overall narrative. Why did GPF sit there in the vehicle, instead of leaving? As high as GPF appears to be, was it a good idea for him to drive? An officer … not DMC … approached the vehicle. GPF opened the car door, instead of rolling down the window. Is this important in what happened later?
GPF is acting like a jerk, and resisting. GPF’s behavior is similar to the performance of Rayshard Brooks in his interrogation. GPF is taken outside the vehicle and handcuffed. GPF starts saying “I can’t breathe” at this point, which might be an indication that he could. Before long, DMC arrives, and GPF is on the ground.
Next, TFOM gets into the riots after GPF died. The Minneapolis government made some questionable decisions. The next part is the trial of DMC. It seems as though the judge made questionable calls about what evidence to admit. Many people say DMC did not receive a fair trial.
One especially controversial element here is the use of Maximal Restraint Technique, or MRT. Some people testified that MRT is not taught by Minneapolis police trainers. Others show pages from training manuals, and pictures of models demonstrating MRT. In bodycam pictures, DMC’s knee appears to be an the shoulder, and the side of the neck. This is not the story that inflamed America.
TFOM does appear to have a “conservative” approach to the story. It is tough to draw conclusions based on watching a documentary. If you want to learn more about GPF and DMC, google is ready when you are. Duckduckgo might be more helpful.

Made Myself Stupid

I made a copy of the 56AATSE. … This is a repost from 2021. Per Wikipedia, James Richardson is still alive.
It sat ignored on my desktop. until this morning. I was looking for something to work with, and started to pick out aphorisms that spoke to me. The first two to make the cut were #3 and #5, which are key players in the fibonacci sequence. Why not just eliminate all the players, except for the f-numbers? Then use those actors as a writing prompt.
First, we need to look into James Richardson. Turns out he is a recently retired English Professor at Princeton. A princeton.edu document has stories about Dr. Richardson: “Some of his colleagues in English will remember how, as department secretary, he recorded the minutes of meetings in rhyming couplets. … Jim is a philosopher-poet in the tradition of … his fellow baseball fan, Walt Whitman.” Apparently, Jim is a Yankees fan, which we can forgive.
1 “No matter how fast you travel, life walks.” Dr. Richardson is fond of semantics.
2 “Desire’s most seductive promise is not pleasure but change, not that you might possess your object but that you might become the one who belongs with it.” Ditto.
3 “There are silences harder to take back than words.” This is the first one that was noteworthy. This does not mean that I agree. Sometimes, the best thing to say is nothing at all. This goes against a commodity wisdom crowd-pleaser. “The Only Thing Necessary for the Triumph of Evil is that Good Men Say Nothing.” As Mike Hunt once said, “Don’t just do something, stand there.”
Kyle Rittenhouse might have a few things to say about this. He heard stories of angry mobs ransacking businesses, and decided to do something. Mr. Rittenhouse was severely punished for his decision to help out. Many of the people who spoke out, about the trial, should have kept their thoughts to themself. Justice is not a popularity contest.
5 “If it can be used again, it is not wisdom but theory.” 90% of the time, when people say theory, they really should say hypothesis. It is not known how this relates to reuseable wisdom.
8 “Everyone loves the Revolution. We only disagree on whether it has occurred.” There is a activist recipe. “To make an omelette, you have to break eggs.” Whenever I hear this, I feel like an egg.

Somehow I can’t help liking them for that. Somehow I can’t help feeling that they like me liking them.” Like Joni Mitchell, Dr. Richardson really doesn’t know clouds at all. We are talking about an atmospheric mass of water droplets, and a big rock traveling 403,000 kilometers away from earth.
21 “Birds are amazing, newspapers, stoves, friends. All that happens is amazing, if you think about it. All that doesn’t happen is even more amazing, because there’s so much more of it. Only habit keeps us from seeing all this. Habit is really amazing.” Is Dr. Richardson talking to newspapers, stoves, or friends? Maybe he is talking to all three. Of course, this was back when print media was much more popular than today, so maybe a newspaper was his friend. This does not account for the stove.
34 “I seem to need a larger vocabulary to talk to you than to talk to myself.” There are things that you know, that you never have to describe. When you talk to another person, you need to explain.
55 “Happiness is gratitude in search of something to be owed to.” Dr. Jim is probably grateful to the University of Michigan, for publishing his 56 Bright Ideas. When you are a high level academic, you need to publish things. UM is playing Georgia on New Years Eve. Many people in Alabama would be grateful if Georgia wins. People will argue about anything. ~ I enjoy listening to his videos about Gaza. Is William Scott Ritter a reliable source? I don’t know, even if I find a lot of what he says to be plausible. I like that he is taking a mostly military approach to the war, which is what it is. According to WSR, Hamas is winning militarily. I also find his take on the Iron Dome to be plausible. According to WSR, the Iron Dome uses interceptor missiles to take down incoming missiles. There is a limited number of these interceptors, and Hezbollah has a lot more missiles. This is both plausible, and something the corporate press is quiet about. ~ Pitrolux® works through the combination of deodorant and testosterone. “The “refreshing juniper scent” caused teenage girls to steal it out of daddy’s medicine cabinet, and grow beards.” This is a Florida story. ~ “is this binary the dumbest thing you’ve ever heard?” idk, some of the racism binaries I have heard are pretty stupid ~ This is a repost from 2017. Maybe it was my easily amused tuesday state of mind that led me to listen to the entire thing. ~ the problem here is the yes/no nature of the question. If the person is sincerely calling for a final solution 2.0, then yes it is bullying/harassment. However, very few people are calling for a literal elimination of Jews. A Real Jefferson Quote
“Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom” Thomas Jefferson. So says an unsightly graphic on /r/QuotesPorn. As the reader(s) of this blog know, I am fond of debunking quotes. Quotes about “honesty” are particularly appealing to those who enjoy quotation pedantry.
The quote is real. Mr. Jefferson wrote a letter to Nathaniel Macon on January 12, 1819. This was a reply to a letter Mr. Macon sent January 4, 1819. The exchange is included in The papers of Thomas Jefferson Retirement series, published by Princeton University Press in 2004. The Library of Congress has a photograph of the Jefferson letter.
The letter to Mr. Macon began with a delightful quote. “Dear Sir The problem you had wished to propose to me was one which I could not have solved; for I know nothing of the facts. I read no newspaper now but Ritchie’s, and in that chiefly the advertisements, for they contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper.”
Sally’s babydaddy was a man of many words. More Tales Of The City
This is a repost from 2017. It was a simpler time. Looking back six years, we had it pretty good in 2017. Our biggest problem was an orange haired idiot in the White House. In three years we would melt down over Covid. In five years Russia would invade Ukraine. In six years, Israel would crank up the lawn mower. In these six years, the national debt has gone from $20t to $34t. That is a $14t increase in six years. By comparison, the total debt in 2011 was $14t. America has borrowed more in the last six years, than it did in 235 years previously. … So much for today’s fantasy. This repost is a book report of More Tales Of The City, another fantasy from a more innocent time. MTOTC took place in the San Francisco of 1977. Talk about not knowing when you had it good. … Whales of the city is about books four and six of the Tales of the City series. In this report, your humble scribe realizes that he has yard sale copies of books two and three, but does not know if he read them. He soon learns that he had not read those two books.
More Tales Of The City, book two of TOTC, is the subject of today’s book report. It begins with Micheal Tolliver’s Valentines Day Resolutions for 1977. “3. I will stop expecting to meet Jan-Michael Vincent at the tubs. 4. I will inhale poppers only through the mouth.” Cruise ship people wonder why Michael wore a T shirt advertising Crisco.
MTOTC occupies a totally different world from the 1988 scenery of Sure of You, book six. Consuming these stories out of sequence can lead to some head scratching. Either Armistead Maupin could see the future, and had a perverted sense of humor, or synchronicity is real. SPOILER ALERT Things in various parts of TOTC will be discussed below. The end of MTOTC shows Michael Tolliver and Mary Ann Singleton bemoaning the departure of Burke Andrew. Mary Ann met Burke on a cruise ship. They had their moment, and Burke got a job in New York. Micheal goes back to his southern queen roots, and quotes Scarlett O’Hara… tomorrow is another day. Fast forward four books/eleven years. Burke is a married New York hotshot. He gets Mary Ann to leave San Francisco, finally, and move on to national stardom in the Big Apple.
86 is an expression meaning get out of here. On page 86 of MTOTC, we see this 1977 comment: “There are – and this is conservatively speaking – one hundred and twenty thousand practicing homosexuals within the city limits of San Francisco. … Those one hundred and twenty thousand homosexuals are going to grow old together, Arch. ….Think of it! The first gay nursing home in the history of the world!” The Arch mentioned in this sales pitch is Archibald Anson Gidde. He will die in book six. The obituary will use a euphemism.
A lot of those 120K P.H. were going to die between book two and book six. One of them is Dr. Jon Fielding, an on-and-off bf of Michael Tolliver. The two re-connect on the same cruise ship that facilitated Mary Ann’s romance. On page 109, Michael is fantasizing about having a decadent funeral. Jon listens appreciatively, then says “Don’t die, O.K.? Not until I’m through with you.” In less than five years, Jon will be through with Micheal, and everything else.
MTOTC is a fun book. It is not a documentary. A few of the plot twists will stretch your credibility. It is escapism, and is set in a more innocent era… back when things were still fun. Razor Girl is a story by Carl Hiaasen. The unpronounceable one specializes is Florida crime stories. Criminals are mustache twirling dastardly. Damsels dwell in fallen angel distress. Lawmen are a citizen complaint away from being criminals. Mr. H, a newspaper dude, says he never makes up anything, but waters down the technicolor reality.
Which brings us to Pitrolux®. This is a combination of deodorant and testosterone. The “refreshing juniper scent” caused teenage girls to steal it out of daddy’s medicine cabinet, and grow beards. The Journal of Sexual Medicine gets down and dirty with “Effect of Deodorant and Antiperspirant Use and Presence or Absence of Axillary Hair on Absorption of Testosterone 2% Solution Applied to Men’s Axillae.” Axillary hair is the stuff that grows under your arms. Conclusions: “Absorption of testosterone 2% solution was unaffected by use of deodorant/antiperspirant or by the presence or absence of axillary hair. This is a repost from December 3, 2017. For 29 weeks, I published a post about people killed by police. 645 incidents were considered, with key statistics broken down in the summary. The series got very little attention. For all the hoopla certain cases generate, most people are not interested in the day to day grind. The 22 people shown below are remembered only by their families.

(1085, 1094) 1098 Quinton Shane Lee may have been suicidal. 1101 Rufus Cedric Baker was killed in a Walmart parking lot. 10 of the cases are considered noteworthy.
“Off-duty officer shoots, kills man who brandished gun at Lenexa Costco An off-duty police officer shot and killed a man who brandished a gun inside a Costco Wholesale store on Sunday. Police got a call about 11 a.m. about a man who was brandishing a firearm at the store. Witnesses said that the man was yelling and pointing a gun. When officers arrived, they found that the man had been shot by someone inside the store and he was pronounced dead. They then learned that an off-duty police officer, who was shopping there, engaged the man inside the store and fatally shot him. …. “You could hear from the front of the store,” one woman said. “A bunch of people were yelling, ‘Everybody get down! Everybody get to the back of the store!'” “We just kind of ran through the neighborhoods to see how far away we could get from the building,” she said. “I just really hope and pray that things get better across the country.” ~ Miguel Robles, a Costco employee, said, “I saw a gentleman standing at the door yelling at everybody. It looked like a .45 revolver in his hand. I just turned around and I started clearing people away from the door and pushing people away. I saw kids and told everybody to grab their kids and keep going, keep going, keep going.” ~ Costco employee Ryan Vacca said, “It was this weird moment for me where I could hear and sense a lot of commotion going on, but it wasn’t really registering with me. I was just kind of watching it ensue.” Vacca said the man was “yelling something about the fire marshal and the doors. It sounded like gibberish.” ~ Bill Payne was shopping with his friend when the incident happened. He said, “I was looking at the TVs and somebody hollered, ‘Man coming in with a gun!’ We ran towards the back and out the side door,” he said, “and when I got to the back, I counted 8 shots. It’s scary.” … Employees have returned to the store, which is expected to reopen on Monday. Armed man in Costco left behind little family, was living in his long-haul truck The screaming man with a gun who terrorized fleeing customers in a Lenexa Costco on Sunday morning was a tractor-trailer driver who, like many long-haul truckers, apparently lived in the cab of his truck. Ronald O. Hunt, 58, left his truck for the last time in the Costco parking lot when — for reasons still unknown to investigators — he walked menacingly into the store where he eventually was gunned down inside by an off-duty lawman.” (1084)
Man Holding Baby Daughter Hostage During Standoff in Covina Is Fatally Shot by Police; Family Questions Use of Force “The nearly 7-hour-long ordeal began about 3 p.m. Sunday when the man, identified by family members as 22-year-old Daniel Navarro, was sitting in a car with his girlfriend and 7-month-old daughter in the 700 block of North Glendora Avenue. The couple apparently got into some sort of argument, prompting a response from the Covina Police Department. At some point, the woman got out of the car but Navarro refused to exit. Authorities said the man in the vehicle made threatening statements and was armed with a knife. … “He picks the baby up and … sometimes he’ll put the baby in front of him to kind of like block the police,” said Jean Claisse. “[The police] were saying ‘We want to help you ‘We want to help you’. And he was saying some bad words back to them.” … Officers said they feared for the girl’s safety because of the man’s statements and devised a plan to rescue her, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release Monday. A loud explosion occurred at the front of the vehicle and officers immediately rushed in and pulled Navarro out. Several shots were fired as Navarro was being dragged out of the vehicle. video (1087)
“On Monday November 27, 2017, Bijan C. Ghaisar died after being on life support for 10 days. Authorities pursued his Jeep sport-utility vehicle on the evening of November 17, 2017, because it had been involved in a hit-and-run accident on the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Alexandria, Virginia. The pursuit ended in the Fort Hunt area of Fairfax County. Ghaisar was then shot by U.S. Park Police after a short chase. His family stated that he had been shot three times in the head and suffered irreversible brain damage…. no weapons were found in his vehicle.” (1090)
Bicyclist killed by deputy cruiser responding to call “POMPANO BEACH, FL. Authorities say a bicyclist has died following a collision with a Florida deputy’s patrol car. Broward Sheriff’s Office officials say the crash happened Tuesday afternoon in Pompano Beach. The bicyclist, who wasn’t immediately named, died at the scene. Authorities say the deputy was responding to a call but wasn’t using lights or sirens when the victim was struck.” (1095)
Statement by … U.S. Border Patrol “A U.S. Border Patrol agent discharged his service issued firearm, striking an assaultive male subject at approximately 11:30 a.m. (MST) on Wednesday, Nov. 29, in a remote area of the Baboquivari Mountain Range west of Three Points, Arizona. The assaultive subject later died as a result of his wounds. Two agents were following a group of suspected illegal aliens through a rugged and remote mountainous area in response to a sensor activation. Both agents encountered the group of men 21 miles north of the U.S./Mexico border. One of the subjects attacked an agent attempting to arrest him and gained control of the agent’s weapon. The other agent shot the subject in response. One agent suffered non-life threating injuries during the assault and was later transported to a Tucson hospital for treatment. Agents arrested three other members of the group – all adult male Guatemalan nationals – for immigration violations.” (1096)
Man dies after shot by Chicago police in Washington Park neighborhood “A South Side man died after he was shot by police while armed with a semi-automatic pistol in the Washington Park neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. Officers responded to a call of shots fired around 2:15 p.m. in the 6100 block of South King Drive and encountered Aquoness Cathery, 24, holding a handgun, according to Chicago Deputy Police Chief Kevin Ryan. “At one point the officers fired and shot the offender, who was then taken into custody,” … Police said they recovered a gun but do not believe Cathery fired it at officers. … Witnesses said the shooting occurred after a police pursuit ended with an Audi crashing at 63rd Street and Vernon Avenue. Police would not comment. The officers were wearing body cameras, and the video will be reviewed as part of the investigation. The officers have been placed on a 30-day administrative leave, Ryan said.” (video) (1097)
Undercover Police Fatally Shoot Robbery Suspect in North Hollywood: LAPD “A suspected male robber was dead after being shot by undercover police in North Hollywood late Thursday afternoon, authorities said. Undercover Los Angeles Police Department officers were investigating a series of robberies in the area when they spotted the suspect at around 4:25 p.m. on the 12000 block of Vose Street, according to Lt. Chris Ramirez. Ramirez said the man jumped into a vehicle and attempted to flee. The suspect got out of the car after a short chase, at which point officers started shooting, Ramirez said. Asked whether the suspect knew the people who had their guns drawn at him were police, Ramirez said, “Usually our detectives always identify themselves as police officers.” Witnesses reported hearing around 10 gunshots with officers asking the suspect to show his hands. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died of gunshot wounds, according to police. It’s unclear what prompted officers to start shooting and whether the suspect was carrying a weapon. Authorities have not identified the suspect.” (1099)
Hendersonville police identify suspect, officer in fatal Walmart shooting ” Police have identified the suspect as Rufus Cedric Baker, a 32-year-old man from Buncombe County. … He said that when the officer tried to arrest Baker, whom Blake said was attempting to sell drugs, Baker tried to escape. The officer involved in the shooting said Baker was inside Baker’s car, and appeared to be reaching for a weapon in his waistband. The chief says officers at the scene recovered 14 bags of crystal meth and the suspect’s gun. Baker is a convicted felon with habitual felon status, whose criminal record includes theft, fraud, eluding arrest, robbery, breaking and entering, and receiving and possessing of stolen goods. He was released this year after serving five years in prison for various offenses. …The official statement from Chief Blake is below: Around 11 p.m. last night, Hendersonville Police Department responded to the scene of an undercover drug investigation at the Walmart Super Center, shot a suspect who was being placed under arrest and attempted to escape. The officer involved reported that the suspect appeared to be reaching for a weapon in his waistband.” (1101)
SF cop fatally shoots man who carjacked state lottery van “A San Francisco police officer shot and killed a suspected carjacker who had injured a state lottery worker, stole her minivan and led police on a chase into a public housing complex in the city’s Bayview neighborhood on Friday, officials said. … The episode began about 10:30 a.m. when police responded to reports that the driver of a California State Lottery van was carjacked in the 1800 block of 23rd Street in Potrero Hill, said Sgt. Michael Andraychak, a San Francisco police spokesman. … Witnesses told police a gold-colored sport utility vehicle drove away from the scene, and officers spotted both the van and the SUV “traveling together down the streets of the Bayview district,” Andraychak said. Police officers stopped the gold-colored SUV at Gilman Avenue and Ingalls Street. (37.7188, -122.388) The men in the vehicle were detained without incident. … additional officers chased the white lottery van into the housing complex to Griffith Street and Fitzgerald Avenue, police said. The driver hit a fence and got out of the van, at which point at least one officer opened fire, police said. It was not immediately clear whether the man was armed. A patrol car stopped behind the lottery van had a shattered front passenger-side window, but police did not say how it was broken. The suspected carjacker, identified by the city medical examiner’s office as 42-year-old Keita O’Neil, was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.” (1102)
