The Jezebel Revival

This content was published July 18, 2020. … “Don’t trust anybody who’d rather be grammatically correct than have a good time.” When perusing lists of salient quotes from Skinny Legs and All, this one will be there. Like many quotes separated from context, it is much more fun to find in the text. Quotes are like perfume. A tasteful drop behind the ear can liven things up. Too many quotes, applied without proper care, can leave the reader running away, gasping for air.

” an old sedan rattled up to the crosswalk, full of music, smoke, and rust. When the light changed, it pooted and tooted in the direction of New Jersey, but not before the objects noted a sticker on its bumper that announced “I’d rather be partying.” Can o’ Beans imagined it to be an infraction of taste, if not of grammar, declaring, “You should never trust anyone who uses ‘party’ as a verb. He/she felt appropriately chastised, when Dirty Sock growled and shot back, “Uh-huh, and don’t trust anybody who’d rather be grammatically correct than have a good time.”

Perspicacious readers might note that this exchange was between a Can o’ Beans, and a Dirty Sock. Since the o’ in Co’B is lower case, it is probable that this is an abbreviation for of, and not an Irish surname. “He’s not Irish” is an old-fashioned way of saying that a person is Jewish. Since the Co’B presumably contained pork, it is unlikely that it was Jewish. The national identity of Co’B must remain a mystery, along with the idea that it was talking to DS.

Tom Robbins novels are, generally, both grammatically correct and purveyors of good times. This does not mean that they always make sense. Co’B and DS are in the basement of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. They are watching a performance artist named Turn Around Norman, who stands on Fifth Avenue and slowly, slowly, slowly does a 270 degree turn. This appeals to Co’B and DS, as well as their departed associate Spoon.

The inanimate threesome was left behind in an Idaho cave. Former, and future, owner Ellen Cherry Charles Petway took them into the cave, intending to have Co’B as lunch. This after husband Boomer Petway intended to have Ellen Cherry for dessert, before eating the more solid food. Boomer wore Dirty Sock into the cave. All was going well, until Ellen Cherry demanded that her hubby call her Jezebel. This woke up Painted Stick and Conch Shell. PS/CS woke up after a millennium long slumber, after hearing the name of a Goddess admirer. If this is getting confusing, maybe you should just go ahead to the pictures. They are from The Library of Congress.

PS/CS were worship objects from ancient Phoenicia. This is a neighbor of Israel, later known as Lebanon. At the time SLAA was set, Lebanon was a hell hole, not least because of its proximity to Israel. After Ellen Cherry cried Jezebel, PS/CS decided that it was time to go to Jerusalem, where grammatically incorrect good times are always abloom. The fact that they were inanimate objects did not stop them from traveling. This is one part of the SLAA fantasy that is not adequately explained, and it probably just attributable to some good mushrooms turning up in the Robbins household.

Jezebel is a historic nickname for a painted, good time woman. Her biblical infamy is probably not deserved, which doesn’t stop the fun. Back before Buckhead became gussified beyond recognition, an apartment building on East Paces Ferry Road featured the Jezebel lounge on the ground floor.

SLAA was written sometime in the late eighties, and published in 1990. At that time, the concept of Singular They had not, mercifully, emerged. The one advantage of ST is referring to objects of uncertain gender. They works much better than he/she. Fwiw, Dirty Sock and Painted Stick are male, while Conch Shell and Spoon are Robbinesque celebrations of femininity. One ponders the chauvinism of he/she. Good manners say that ladies should go first.

I took a facebook break, and stumbled onto a video. The poet wrote this when he was fifteen +/-, and starred in a performance as an adult. It is about “toxic masculinity” and is filmed on an in-town sidewalk. I did a screen capture of the money shot. A no-parking sign is growing out of his head. Part one of this commentary was published twelve days ago. Pictures today are from The Library of Congress. Losing IQ Points

Posted in Library of Congress, Path Journal by chamblee54 on July 17, 2026

0710-0947 – The path journal episode for last week, Da Vinci Code For Morons, was posted this morning. The walk today was pretty good. The construction equipment and leaf blowers were quiet, as was the foot dizziness. I got 36 minutes in without any problems.

The first podcast was the last 15 minutes of Why Are Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s Kids Dropping “Pitt” from Their Names?, from Infamous. “Brangelina” is another reminder that celebrities are not always friendly, well adjusted individuals. The second show was Wendy O. Williams: The Shocking Final Act of a Shock Rock Provocateur, from Disgraceland. Wendy Orlean Williams (her real name) was a misfit teenager. She wound up as a domanatrix in a Times Square sex show, “Captain Kink’s Theater”. WOW and CK had many groovy adventures together. Unfortunately, this story does not have a happy ending. There was no encore at this concert.

0711-1057 – The walk was good, even if I nearly melted. July in Georgia is no joke. The podcast was “Judy Collins Reflects on Six Decades of Legendary Songwriting and Performances” on Takin’ A Walk. There were some cool stories, which might be true.

“It was 1967 and I was sound asleep. I woke up to the phone at three in the morning and it was Al Kooper. I said, why are you calling me? … So he said, I’m at the club and there’s a girl here and she said that she wrote songs. Then he put her on the phone and it was Joni Mitchell, and she sang me Both Sides Now. So I mean, that’s a very convenient way to collect songs. I guess we don’t have much control over it, but there it is. And I said I’ll be right over, which I did. I came over in the morning and I took Jack Holsmand with me and I recorded that song with my producer and it was incredible.”

“I had a job at, I forget the name of the club. … It was that hot club in the village and I was the headliner in 1961. That was amazing because I’d just been doing this since 1959, so I’d only been out on the road for a total of two and a half years. And I got to the little club and I was the headliner and my opener was a thirteen year old named Arlo Guthrie. And everybody in town was there. … I thought, Oh, they’re coming to see me. They were coming to see Arlo because Arlo was thirteen. He was having his first gig at this little club … And everybody was there.”

0712-1002 – The walk today was great. The podcast was Bryan Washington Reads “Gatekeeping” from The New Yorker. Bryan Washington is a favorite at tny. Today’s tale is about a wheelchair pusher at Houston’s airport. The actor has a collection of elderly people to propel to their flights, several of whom hit on him. The actor has an Asian “buddy,” but gets nervous when people say boyfriend. The story is an hour long, and I stayed on the path, with no foot issues, for the entire show.

@NewYorker “My brother answered the phone. He told me that there’d been an accident but not to panic.” · @chamblee54 “I listened to this on my morning walk. When brother said “your bf”, you said f*** n*****. America’s two favorite forbidden words.”

0713-0846 – The walk today was nice. Mild overcast weather, with barely noticeable foot dizziness. The first podcast was Episode 316: Graham Cracker Crumbles on Blocked and Reported. If only the show was as clever as the title. Jesse and Katie were talking about a wokeness incident in California before they talked about Graham Platner. Neither subject held much interest. The show I listened to the most was Maggie Haberman on Talk Easy. Maggie Lindsy Haberman has been covering New York, and Donald Trump, since 1996.

They originally said that the ballroom was going to be near but not touching the East Wing. · And that’s also how he approaches his relationship to his wife.”

Re: “This whole handling of the Epstein files in the summer of 2025.” “From everyone we’ve spoken to who’s deep inside Trump’s world and our reporting, that really was the moment that he started to lose altitude with his own base. He’s so used to telling his supporters, “Believe me and not that.” And it generally has worked. Uh this one didn’t. and he is testing the limits on how long you can tell people two different things related to the same issue.”

0714-0915 – The walk today happened. The first show was For The Love Of Dogs: The Scam Shelters Abusing Animals For Clicks on Chameleon. It was about animal rescue scams based in Uganda, and it was as boring as it sounds. The host said that if you were upset by animal abuse, then you should skip the next few minutes. I decided to skip the rest of the episode. The next show was Happy Mondays: How Thieves, Drug Dealers, and Would-Be Kidnappers Took Over Madchester’s Music Scene on Disgraceland. Happy Mondays were a bunch of fun loving English deplorables. They started a band. What could possibly go wrong?

0715-0931 – The walk today was spectacular. I walked for over an hour with minimal foot discomfort. The entertainment product today was #448 – “Kirk BULLET!” – Death Investigator BREAKS SILENCE on Charlie Kirk | Joseph Scott Morgan on Julian Dorey Podcast. They were mostly discussing the Charlie Kirk case. The first hour included a detailed look at what happened to Mr. Kirk when he was hit, and about the autopsy procedure.

One of the huge problems with this case just in general, regardless of what the truth is or isn’t, but it’s a huge problem that I think needs to be raised, is the complete fuckupery of every optic that you could have if you are trying to generate public trust in investigations.”

But one of the things that was like, oh my god, who on earth told you to press send on this tweet was nine days afterwards or 10 days afterwards, Andrew Kolvet put out a tweet regarding what the doctors told him about Charlie’s wound.” This refers to a tweet from @AndrewKolvet This refers to a tweet from Andrew Kolvet. “His bone was so healthy and the density was so impressive that he’s like the man of steel. It should have just gone through and through.” We are entering the twilight zone.

This is not a miracle. This is physics.” · “Like an exploding microphone. No, it’s · so you’re out on the exploding microphone. Okay, here we go. · So I think I lost points off of my IQ just by saying exploding microphone.” · “I can in fact see why people would have trouble grasping the idea that he is walking stiff-legged up that stairwell with that weapon in his pants.”

0716-0934 – The walk today happened. The feet worked, the heat and humidity were obnoxious, and the construction equipment at the school made noise. I lasted appx 44 minutes. 44 was Hank Aaron’s number, and is said by some to be a magic number. The entertainment product today was the last twenty minutes of #448 – “Kirk BULLET!” – Death Investigator BREAKS SILENCE on Charlie Kirk | Joseph Scott Morgan on Julian Dorey Podcast. JSM was throwing some DNA meganumbers around, and believes Tyler James Robinson was definitely at the crime scene. There are lots of unanswered questions. One regards the trajectory of the bullet that hit Charles James Kirk. … middle name synchronicity … These calculations have been made impossible by the renovation of the crime scene.

The inevitable comments about Lance Twiggs being trans were made. (The DOB and middle name of Mr. Twiggs are not available. Considering that all we have seen is a low-fi video of the gentleman, is it fair to speculate that Mr. Twiggs is an AI creation?) We do know that Twiggs/Robinson lived in St. George UT, 266 miles from UVU in Orem UT. · Utah Gov. Spencer Cox announced “The roommate was a romantic partner, a male transitioning to female.” I questioned this at the time. I think the Governor was trying to foment prejudice against TJR. The trans thing has been neither denied nor confirmed, but is constantly mentioned in talk about TJR.

Another bit of weirdness is George Hodgson Zinn. He is at the scene of the shooting, and announces that he is the killer. This makes no sense at all. Later, GHZ consents to a search of his phone, and LEO find “Child Sex Abuse Material.” How convenient. Julian Dorey makes a comment about this. “The George Zinn guy being there and then he finally goes down. He’s been arrested over the years for so many different things, but now they find CP on his stuff and he goes to prison for that as he should by the way, obviously.” … Pictures today are from The Library of Congress. Annabelle

Posted in Georgia History, Library of Congress, Religion by chamblee54 on July 16, 2026

This content was posted July 21, 2014. … Annabelle is a song by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. It is quite lovely. Annabelle is the daughter, and the one bright spot in a hard life. This life of toil lasts until we are “gone to Jesus.”

I have had a tough time with Jesus. Rudeness, disrespect, verbal abuse, and humiliation have been landmarks on the journey. When you don’t agree with the plan for life after death, you wonder if the bad parts of Jesus are worth it. To me, the negatives overwhelmingly outweigh the positives. Just hearing a passing reference to Jesus can set me to brooding.

One day, I was driving past the oil tanks in Doraville, and heard “Annabelle.” The sadness that Jesus causes became overwhelming. Is it always going to be like this? When people talk/sing/act out for Jesus, is it always going to remind me of the pain? The Jesus worshipers have so much fun with their noise, that they scarcely notice the discomfort of others. They usually don’t care.

I see Jesus in the words and deeds of his believers. It has been a horrible experience. When you decide that Jesus was killed for being a trouble maker, and his death has nothing to do with what happens to you when you die … it takes away the one justification for all the abuse. Slaughterhouse-Five Part Two

Posted in Book Reports, GSU photo archive by chamblee54 on July 15, 2026

This product was posted July 29, 2015. … This is part two of an excavation of Slaughterhouse-Five, a story by Kurt Vonnegut. … The second chapter is the beginning of the story. The first eight words sum up the plot nicely. “LISTEN: Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time.” The first word is the most important, and the most likely to be ignored. People love to talk, but do not like to listen. If they do quit talking, and allow the other person to speak, then they are thinking of a clever comeback. If only people were as proud of the ability to listen, as they are of the clever things they say.

Billy Pilgrim, or BP, is the main character of this story. By trade, he was an optometrist in Ilium, NY. BP led a reasonably pleasant life, in spite of, or perhaps because of, being shaped like a Coca Cola bottle. His father was a barber, also in the mythical town of Ilium, NY, until he died in a hunting accident. This incident motivates KV to write “So it goes.” This will be abbreviated as SIG006.

BP … which under no circumstances should be confused with British Petroleum … survives infantry duty in World War II, and a plane crash in 1968. This crash killed everyone except BP and the co-pilot. SIG007. The plane crash is an important moment in the movie version of SF. I saw the SF movie, while a UGA student, at the PJ auditorium. That is enough initials for one paragraph.

While recovering from the plane crash, BP’s wife dies of carbon monoxide poisoning. SIG008. (In the note taking that preceded this text, I missed SIG008. If this was a scholarly dissertation, this would be a big deal. To a slack blogger, it is not. While I will try to chronicle all 106 SIG in SF, I am not making any promises.) After the plane crash, BP comes out of the time travel closet. BP tells earth people about the wonders of Tralfamadore. These folks are two feet tall, green, and shaped like plungers. Tralfamadorians feel sorry for earth people.

I have long suspected that I am a Zorlac, from the planet Thrunombulax. I am quiet about this, as prejudice against Zorlacs is acceptable by polite people. Many white people are trying so, so, hard not to appear prejudiced against anyone. When they see an approved target for their tribal rage, white people lose it. Just look at the way people with deviant attitudes about race relations are portrayed. With this in mind, I have learned to keep quiet about his Thrunombulaxian origin. The relationship of Thrunombulax to Tralfamadore is unknown.

A letter was written to the Ilium News Leader by BP. He tells about the lessons he learned on Tralfamadore. This was in 1967, on the eve of BP’s daughter’s wedding. Trallies see a person who is dead, and say that he/she is having a bad day. It is a Trally custom to say, about death, so it goes. SIG009. Number nine, number nine, number nine. Turn me on dead man. The Beatles white album was recorded at approximately the same time as BP going to Tralfamadore.

A wonderful tool is now available for the production of this SF commentary, and SIG inventory. The text of SF … not to be confused with science fiction or San Francisco … is available electronically in the sf_pdf. Alas, it is an imperfect tool. You can download a copy to your machine. On this copy you can highlight certain words in yellow magic marker, but you cannot copy text. You can copy text from the online version, but it comes out funny and you have to do so much editing that it might be easier to just manually copy the text.

While working on the letter about Trallies, BP is visited by his daughter, Barbara. At a young age, she had to manage her mother’s funeral, and take care of her senile father. KV, who has a way with words, describes the young lady as a “a bitchy flibbertigibbet … legs like an Edwardian grand piano.” Barbara … we might know her married name later … asks her dad why he waited until 1968 to talk about time travel. He did not think the time was ripe.

The tale segues into the first experiences with time travel. This was in World War II. BP was a chaplain’s assistant, which is not a well thought of position. One day on maneuvers, BP was playing A Mighty Fortress Is Our God on the organ. (KV made a mistake here. AMFIOG was written by Martin Luther, without any assistance from Johann Sebastian Bach.) A war game umpire showed up, and told everyone that they were dead. Before long, BP got word that his father had been killed while hunting deer. SIG010. The offending shot was fired by his human friend, and not by a deer.

When BP returns from the funeral, there are orders for him to go to Europe. A chaplain’s assistant has been killed in action. SIG011. Soon, BP participates in the Battle of the Bulge. BP has no weapon, helmet, or boots. BP looks alternately like a box of kitchen matches, and a filthy flamingo. BP meets foulmouthed Pittsburgh refugee Roland Weary, who saves BP numerous times before trying to kill him. Roland Weary was the only member of a gun crew to survive a 88mm German tank gun. SIG011.

The name Roland means many things to me. Rowland NC, with an ornamental w, is the hometown of my father. Roland Cofer is a former co-worker. Roland Cofer was the cheerful son of Willie Simpson, the store manager. The fact that Roland is black, and Willie is white, should not concern the reader. It did not concern Roland or Willie.

The father of Roland Weary was a plumber. He collected guns, knives, and torture devices. The noname dad gave his wife a model of an iron maiden, which was a torture device before it was a heavy metal band. The device was a small chamber, with doors on hinges. The doors were lined with spikes, which impale the guest when the doors are closed. There is a drain in the bottom, for elimination of blood. SIG012. No mention is made of who cleans the iron maiden, or if it was cleaned. Eventually the smell would make the spikes redundant.

Roland Weary was a bully. He saw BP as a good target for his tough talk. Once, he described a torture where someone was tied down, with his eyes facing the sky. The eyelids are cut off, so there is no stopping the sun. SIG013.

BP is showing signs of common sense. He lets the motor mouth ramble without protest or argument. It turns out that BP is no stranger to gore. (This is blood and guts, not slick Willie’s VPOTUS.) BP had an explicit crucifix in his bedroom. Though nominally nondenominational, the Pilgrim family made sure young Billy knew all about the terrible things that happened to Jesus. SIG014.

Roland Weary had a pornographic picture, which BP saw numerous times. The legend was that André Le Fèvre was an assistant to Louis J. M. Daguerre was busted for selling a print of this photograph. Mr. Le Fèvre died in prison. SIG015. A killjoy website, mental floss, says this never happened. Roland Weary later fantasizes being the only survivor of a German attack. SIG016.

It was about this time that BP starts to time travel. The first visit is to the YMCA, where his father is teaching him how to swim. The second adventure is to 1965, when BP is 41 years old. His mother is in an old peoples home. (I once used the phrase “old folks home” at an estate sale, and was quickly told that OFH was considered rude.) While BP was at the OFH, a former marathon runner crossed the mortal finish line, and was wheeled out on a gurney. SIG017.

While sitting in a chair at the OFH, BP noticed a lump in the cushion. It was a book, The Execution of Private Slovik. Eddie Slovik was an American soldier, who was executed for desertion in 1945. SIG018. An excerpt from the court opinion in the case is quoted. It seems as though Pvt. Slovik was executed as a morale building exercise. SIG019.

The next time travel episode was a party in 1958. BP gets drunk, and screws a woman he is not married to. This is putting the tryst back in optometrist. When BP comes back to real time 1945, Roland Weary is about to kick him in the lower back. This effort at self expression is interrupted by the Germans, who take BP prisoner. This is the end of chapter two.

Walt Whitman And The War

Posted in Book Reports, Library of Congress, War by chamblee54 on July 14, 2026

This content was originally published July 4, 2024. … Every Night For A Thousand Years is a story about Walt Whitman’s time as a caregiver during the War Between the States. It appears this month on The New Yorker fiction podcast. ENFATY was written in the voice of Mr. Whitman by Chris Adrian, and read for the podcast by @NathanEnglander.

After looking for his wounded brother, Mr. Whitman was struck by the plight of wounded soldiers. He started to visit the soldiers, giving them candy and food, writing letters for them, and giving what comfort he could. ENFATY focuses on one soldier, Hank Smith. Doctors wanted to amputate his leg. Hank had a pistol, and would not let them. By the time Hank was tricked into allowing an amputation, it was too late.

Not everyone approved of Mr. Whitman. “One disapproving commissioner, Harriet Hawley, complained to her husband: “Here comes that odious Walt Whitman to talk evil and unbelief to my boys. I think I would rather see the evil one himself—at least if he had horns and hooves.”

Others saw things differently. “Union Colonel Richard Hinton met Whitman at Armory Square Hospital while recovering from a bullet wound suffered at Antietam … “When this old heathen came and gave me a pipe and tobacco, it was about the most joyous moment of my life. Walt Whitman’s funny stories, and his pipes and tobacco were worth more than all the preachers and tracts in Christendom. A wounded soldier don’t like to be reminded of his God more than twenty times a day. Walt Whitman didn’t bring any tracts or bibles; he didn’t ask if you loved the Lord, and didn’t seem to care whether you did nor not.”

Conditions conditions in the hospitals were beyond horrible. This was an era when many people said “I do not need to wash my hands every day!” One nurse asked Mr. Whitman if he had a Bible. She wanted to cheer up, by reading the Book of Job.

These hospitals, ranging in size from converted private mansions to filthy, mud-encrusted tents in contraband camps, were places to be feared by any thinking person. The great European medical advances in bacteriology and antisepsis were still tragically a few years in the future … the overworked and understaffed physicians continued to ascribe the soldiers’ ills to such fantastical causes as “malarial miasms, mephitic effluvia, … sewer emanations, and poisonous fungi in the atmosphere.” …

The predictable result of such hurried and horrific operations was postoperative infection. Pyemia, septicemia, erysipelas, osteomyelitis, tetanus, and gangrene were grouped together as “surgical fevers.” Pyemia, literally “pus in the blood,” was the most dreaded of all, with a mortality rate of 97.4 percent, but the other surgical fevers also claimed their deadly share of victims. Not without reason did Civil War soldiers fear doctors much more intensely than they feared the enemy. They had a greater chance of dying in the hospital than in the field.

That whole damned war business is about 999 parts diarrhea to one part glory.” The quote is on page 187 of Intimate with Walt – Selections from Whitman’s Conversations with Horace Traubel, 1882-1892. Pictures today are from The Library of Congress. The social media picture was taken in September 1864. “Petersburg, Va. Group of Company B, U.S. Engineer Battalion”

Jane Fonda

Posted in GSU photo archive, Politics, War by chamblee54 on July 12, 2026

This content was originally publishedMay 28, 2007. This is a work of speculation, and has no basis in proven fact. The thesis cannot be proven nor disproven.

Listening to talk radio while you drive is a dangerous activity. You might start to think, and look at the man behind the screen. Neal Boortz was on a rant today about Jane Fonda. It is the same story you have heard many times … she gave aid and comfort to the enemy, she is a traitor, American troops died because of her, she should have been executed.

Sometimes when you hear something too many times, you begin to have doubts about what you heard. A light bulb went off in my head when I heard the Fonda Rant again … What if Jane Fonda was working for the US government when she went to Hanoi?

How would this benefit the government? This trip gave our government a discredited leader of the antiwar movement to denounce. When the government was trashing Jane Fonda, they did not have to defend the disastrous policies of that war.

Miss Fonda has been an icon of right wing hatred ever since, as well as of military training. One story has Miss Fonda giving the North Vietnamese information about activities by American forces. How would she get this information?

The infamous trip to Hanoi took place in the Summer of 1972. American troops were being withdrawn, and anti war protests lost most of their passion. (It was also soon after the death of F.B.I. Director J. Edgar Hoover, and the Watergate burglary) The war in Vietnam was essentially over for America. We were no longer trying to win, but to negotiate a face saving treaty. President Nixon called it “Peace with Honor.” Miss Fonda’s actions probably had little impact on these negotiations.

In 1967, Kurt Vonnegut published a book titled “Mother Night.” It tells the story of Howard W. Campbell Jr. Mr. Campbell made propaganda broadcasts for Germany in World War II, which were secretly used to pass coded messages to the Allies. He was condemned as a traitor after the war, but never prosecuted. He did not win an Academy Award.

Why would a woman known for her left wing activism do such a thing? Maybe, the FBI had some dirt on her, and blackmailed her. Perhaps Miss Fonda was sincere in her actions, but aided by the government. Miss Fonda was under surveillance in 1972. The government would have known about her plans to go to North Vietnam, and perhaps could have stopped her. But, because her going to Hanoi was to their advantage, the government allowed the trip to take place.

The above is speculation, and could be horribly wrong. The fact that Miss Fonda has expressed regrets over her trip neither proves nor disproves this. She got great movie roles, and won two Academy Awards, during the seventies. This may be a coincidence, or maybe it was a reward for her service.

Clearly, the trip she made to Hanoi had propaganda value to the US government. It has been a Godsend over the years. You should always consider who benefits from an action.

During his rant today, Mr. Boortz said that US troops died because of Miss Fonda. (He does not discuss the man who went to Nam in his place, after his draft deferment.) By saying this, he can ignore the tens of thousands of troops who died because Richard Nixon chose to wait until 1973 to sign a “peace treaty”. He could have made the same deal in 1969. Peace with honor indeed. … Pictures today are from Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library The social media picture: A&P Food Store ©Luther Mckinnon 2026 · selah

Da Vinci Code For Morons

Posted in Path Journal by chamblee54 on July 10, 2026

0703-0917 – The journal of last week is available. The walk went well today. The feet worked well. My back is starting to act cranky, which means drinking lots of water and otherwise taking it easy. 48 minutes on the path seems to agree with my spine.

The first podcast was Paul Yoon Reads Fiona McFarlane from The New Yorker. Once a month at TNY, somebody reads a story out of the archive. Today there was a male voice that was referring to “my husband.” Since the author is named Fiona, it is safe to say we have a female protagonist. The story was fun. A couple meets a Swiss girl. She is in a bad way, and the couple invites her to stay at their place. A few weeks later, the girl and her boyfriend disappear, and are later found murdered.

The second podcast was Louis C.K. on Tetragrammaton. Louis Alfred Székely is a famous comedian, whose content I have never made friends with. LCK talks in technical terms about comedy. “ I’ve been surprised sometimes by what bits have grown, but they’re seeds. Jokes are seeds. And sometimes they just polish and harden and stay the same size and they you end up with a nut and sometimes they sprout and grow roots and all kinds of [ __ ] like crazy [ __ ]”

0704-0944 – The walk was uneventful. There were no foot problems, and I did the standard 36 minutes. The podcasts were kinda blah. Chameleon had a rerun of an old show. I got bored quickly. Broken Records featured Joe Jackson, another 80s rockstar I never got into. Finally, I put on Wolfgang Van Halen on The Magnificent Others with Billy Corgan.

0705-1001 – The walk was uneventful. The dizziness came up in the second lap, but never got too bad. The show was Danny McBride’s Delusions of Grandeur from Talk Easy. “Daniel Richard McBride is an American actor, comedian, producer, and writer.” DRB has his story. He describes the childhood experience of learning that adults don’t always know what they are talking about. “Well, once you’ve decoded that, the rest of life becomes very funny. You start seeing it everywhere. It’s like the Da Vinci Code of Morons. You get to just dissect them all. It’s great. · And so that’s how you would describe your childhood, a Da Vinci Code of Morons. · Yeah. Exactly. Then you could see the keys. You’re like, they’re everywhere. They’re all around us.” … DRB casually says “I have a very bad gambling problem.” This might be his Da Vinci code for morons.

0706-0929 – The walk today went well. The feet were not a problem. The entertainment was EP:53 – Kiev Burning from Provoked. Scott and Darryl were talking about the war in Ukraine.

“… it’s just like Dan Crenshaw said, like a lot of these guys have said, it’s just we get to trade dollars that we print, anyway, uh for Russian bodies. Sounds like a good deal to me. You know, that’s like what came out of Dan Crenshaw’s mouth.”

I was unable to verify this quote. However, you can find quotes by other people saying essentially the same thing. Support of Ukraine is seen as a way to weaken Russia. The dead conscripts, on both sides, are just the cost of doing business.

But Fiona Hill wasn’t man enough to say, “No, you stupid. That the point is not about …” Dr. Hill was “an intelligence analyst under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama from 2006 to 2009 with the National Intelligence Council.” If the photographs are accurate, Dr. Hill presents as female.

Jordan Peterson, I think he’s scum. I never was impressed by him whatsoever. And I read this hilarious thing by Nathan Robinson who writes Current Affairs. … he wrote this article about Jordan Peterson and about what an absolute fraud he is and how he just uses all these big words and lots of italics to try to make just absolute idiot basic truisms seem like these profound breakthroughs of, you know, meaningful whatever.” This is Scott talking. Darryl is more sympathetic to Dr. Peterson. Soon, Scott fought back. “I never paid attention to all that stuff, because I have a dad.”

0707-0933 – The walk today was fabulous. There was mild dizziness, and I walked 1.51 miles in 47:12. The podcast was Jim Morrison: Who Killed Jim Morrison?, from Disgraceland. Jim Morrison’s death was mysterious. One plot has Jimbo faking his death, and becoming Rush Limbaugh. Jake concludes that the most likely scenario has Jimbo confusing heroin for cocaine, and taking a terminal toot.

Another story I had not heard involves Janis Joplin. Allegedly, she kept a supply of cocaine in an amulet on her neck. If she felt an od coming on, she could snort some coke to snap out of it. Somehow, the cocaine was swapped out for heroin, with fatal results.

The first show ran out before the walk ended, and I went to the next show on the media player. It was Legendary Manager Freddy DeMann on The Magnificent Others with Billy Corgan Mr. DeMann is the former manager of Michael Jackson and Madonna. This show promises to be entertaining. “I used to smoke a little Reefer. And uh Reefer dates me, doesn’t it? · Yes, it does.”

0708-0953 – The walk today happened. I stopped after 36:00 minutes, with nuisance level dizziness throughout. The entertainment was more of Legendary Manager Freddy DeMann on The Magnificent Others with Billy Corgan. Freddy talked about Michael Jackson and Madonna.

Michael said to me, “Fred, I’m so glad you fought with Quincy and won. I didn’t have the nerve to talk to him, so I’m so glad you did.” Michael’s first solo album, Off the Wall, was being released. Quincy Jones wanted one song to be the first single, and Mr. DeMann wanted another. As it turns out, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” was a huge hit.

You know the record business rewards sociopaths. I’m not accusing Michael Jackson of being a sociopath, but there’s sociopathic behaviors that all artists have, and I would include myself in that. It’s a desire to be loved or cherished or celebrated or win, you know, all any combination of the above. Ambition being the central word in that.” This is Billy Corgan talking.

0709-0909 – The walk today was a bit tougher. The dizziness started, and never went away. A construction device at the top of the hill made a lot of noise. The show was The Sting That Exposed How Meta Endangers Kids from Question Everything. Host Brian Reed promoted the show on X. “@BriHReed In 2023, special investigators in the office of Internet Crimes Against Children created a Facebook account for a fictional 13-year-old girl named “Issa Bee.” (The name was inspired by the 21 Savage song.) They were trying to catch a specific sexual predator they were tracking.”

The state of New Mexico set up a sting operation to catch people who try to “date” underage girls. TSTEHMEK centers around a “13 yo girl” the LEO digitally created. Within a few weeks on facebook, “Issa Bee” had 5000 “friends” and over 7000 followers. How many of these digital pervs were real humans, and how many were bots? Is there an ai ourobouros of bots chasing after bots? … The case is in the New Mexico courts now. Whatever ruling the court issues will be appealed ad nauseam.

The pictures are haiku reductions created by some weirdo in Georgia.

Smash Cut

Posted in Book Reports, Library of Congress by chamblee54 on July 9, 2026

This content was published July 2, 2023. … Smash Cut by Brad Gooch, turned up at the Chamblee library. The subtitle is “A Memoir of Howard & Art & the ’70s & the ’80s.” The cover has a picture of Brad Gooch and Howard Eric Brookner. The 1979 picture shows BG (google does not know his middle name) and HEB is a small, well used kitchen. Someone wrote, and then scratched out, “at the Chelsea Hotel.” In the notes, we see that BG and HEB were boyfriends in 70s and 80s Manhattan. At some point in the story, HEB got AIDS.

April 27, 1989, was HEB’s last day on the planet. I was 16 weeks into not drinking. HEB was seven days older than me. There are many other parallels between my life, and the concurrent Brad/Howard story. Their story has a lot more famous people involved.

HEB was a filmmaker, with wealthy Jewish parents. He met BG at a bar in Lower Manhattan in 1978. They go back to Howard’s place, drink vodka, and crash. They quickly become boyfriends, and have a terrific time together when they aren’t quarreling about who is fucking who. Howard is working on a movie about William S. Burroughs. When you hang out with Mr. Burroughs, it is considered good manners to take heroin. This becomes a problem for HEB.

Meanwhile, BG was in grad school at Columbia, finishing a PhD in English. He wound up as an English professor at some college. You kind of wonder how BG had time to write a PhD dissertation, while diving into the full tilt sex and drugs of pre-aids Manhattan. Nor do we ever find out how they paid for all this high octane living.

BG becomes a model, hanging out in Europe for a while. HEB decides he doesn’t want to be BG’s boyfriend anymore. That continues off and on for a few years, until that day in 1987 when HEB finds out he is HIV positive. The first year it doesn’t really cause that many problems, but then it does. The last 40 pages of this book are incredibly tough to read. HEB goes into the hospital, it seems like he’s never going to come home. BG gets a job as a professor, and publishes a novel, in addition to being there for HEB. Eventually, HEB got another o.i., and moved on.

Smash Cut is the third book by BG I have started. The Flannery O’Connor book is excellent. The Rumi book has too many unpronounceable names. SC is an fun read, full of gossipy stories about people like Andy Warhol, Madonna, and Keith Haring. The publicity machine is already cranking up for book that BG wrote about Mr. Haring. If the last 40 pages of SC are too difficult, you can skip over it. You already know how it is going to turn out. Pictures today are from The Library of Congress. JD Vance

Posted in Library of Congress, Politics, War by chamblee54 on July 8, 2026

This content was published July 16, 2024. … @JDVance1 “Praying for our friends in Israel this morning. Just an awful situation.” 5:57 AM · Oct 7, 2023. This tweet is how I found out about the attack on Israel. The war that followed is a historic tragedy, no matter which team you are on.

John David Vance is going to be the Republican nominee for Vice President. The odds are very good that he will be elected. Since he is 39 years old, he should have a long career.

@JDVance1 “As we watch this horrible situation in Israel unfold, Americans must face a stark truth: our tax dollars funded this. Money is fungible, and many of the dollars we sent to Iran are being used to now kill innocent people. This must stop. Israel has every right to defend itself. I wish our friends well, but most of all I wish they weren’t fighting against weapons bought with our money.” 6:44 AM · @JDVance1 “We didn’t give them money we just unfroze their money.” “They promised they’d only spend it on humanitarian supplies. I’m sure they’re very trustworthy.” “I’ll ignore the $400m pallet of cash delivered by the last Democrat administration.” Complete idiocy.” 1:31 PM

The initial reactions of people to historic landmarks can be revealing. It is noteworthy that Sen. Vance chose to talk about Iran. The money was earned by selling Iranian oil. It was frozen in western banks because of sanctions against the Iranian regime. It was Iran’s money. We did not give them anything.

As a private citizen, I am not obligated to comment on current events. When Al-Aqsa Flood started, I knew two things. Israel would exponentially retaliate, and lose most of the world. The supporters of Israel would fight, using every trick of shady propaganda known to man. This was going to result in bitter, toxic arguments. I did not yet know the terms “hasbara” and “hannibal directive.”

Al-Aqsa Flood has already had a devastating impact on Palestine. There is a potential for greater conflict in the region, including war with Iran. A war with Iran could close the Strait of Hormuz, and shut down the world economy. It is telling that the reaction of Sen. Vance, on October 7, was to denounce Iran.
