This is my 911 story. I repeat it every year at this time. If you saw it last year, it has not changed. Feel free to skip the text and look at the pictures.

I was at work, and someone called out that someone had run a plane into the World Trade Center. I didn’t think much of it, until I heard that the second tower had been hit, then the Pentagon, then the towers collapsed, then a plane crashed in Pennsylvania.

I focused on my job most of the day. There was always a lot of melodrama at that facility, and concentrating on my production duties helped to keep me saner. This was roughly the halfway point of my seven year tenure at this place.

One of the other workers was a bully for Jesus. He was a hateful loudmouth. After the extent of the damage became known, he shouted “They are doing this for Allah,” and prayed at his desk. The spectacle of the BFJ praying made me want to puke.

I became alienated from Jesus during these years. Once, I had once been tolerant of Christians and Jesus, as one would be with an eccentric relative. I began to loath the entire affair. I hear of others who found comfort in religion during this difficult time. That option simply was not available for me.

Have you ever heard of The Jefferson Bible ?

It used to b handed-out to new members of Congress.

I do not know why this tradition ceased; I have my suspicious, though.

I suggest you read it, because it is a different take on Jesus, and because it’s mere existence sends the unthinking Fundie-types into an apoplectic fit.

But mostly I suggest it because it’s a crucial piece of American history that has been aggressively and actively repressed.

    My 911 story.

I slept in that day and was living on the West coast. I was walking to visit someone, and stopped in front of a news kiosk.
The front page of the afternoon paper had the towers burning on it, having been to the WTC, I was extremely distressed.

I stood there, in the hot afternoon sun, frozen, staring, as people walked by. For a long time.

That night it was deathly quiet in the city, as the planes had all been grounded. I remarked to the roomies that this odd and disturbing silence reminded me of something uncanny, but could not put my finger on what it was I was remembering that sent a chill down my spine.

Later that night whilst smoking a jay with the roomies I remembered and exclaimed

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL ! ! !

They didn’t get it. I ran out imminently and rented it and made them watch it.

Was Flash Gordon there, in silver underwear?

That would be the giant robot, Gort.

For a 1950 flick, despite the dated special effects, it’s amazing and a very *SWEET* film.
Particularly as a Cold War protest movie, given they had to contend with censors on the set !
Patricia Neal was pretty great in it too.
Have you seen it ? If not, you must. It’s not really Flash Gordon-y at all…
