Oakland Cemetery Festival
There was “A Victorian Festival” in Oakland Cemetery Sunday. The parking was crowded, but a space turned up in the MARTA lot near the entrance.
The ads said a five dollar suggested donation, which gave cheapskate PG ideas about getting in free. A friendly man at the entrance said, ” I am here to take your money”.
The ads promised people in Victorian costume, live music, free tours, and open mausoleums. PG and Uzi heard a performance while walking up the hill from the Confederate section, but made it to the venue in time to hear the applause. A barbershop quartet gave a strolling show, and a lady by an open grave was telling stories.
The part PG enjoyed the most was the open mausoleums. The ornate doors are made of cast iron, and very heavy. PG pushed a door aside to take a picture, and a lady asked if she could hold it. The door was not going anywhere.
The unquestioned star of Oakland Cemetery is Margaret Mitchell. Her spot is unpretentious, with no gargoyles or angels. It has been 61 years since Mrs. Marsh left a cocktail hour,at the Atlanta Women’s Club, and stepped in front of a taxi.
