Conservatives Are Fun People

We had a post here a few days ago inspired by a list of dumb liberal quotes. In the spirit of fairness, it is time to take a look at the Top 50 Dumbest Conservative Quotes. The credit/blame for introducing chamblee54 to these pages goes to Morgan K Freeberg. This is a repost.
We are going to look at three quotes today. Many of the top 50 are from the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Jerry Falwell, and should not be taken seriously. The three today are from actors in leading roles.
Number 1 on the list is from Richard Nixon. “When the President does it, that means that it’s not illegal.” This was said during a TV interview with David Frost, after he was out of office. A bit of digging found a bit of back story.
“Interviewer David Frost has a difficult time with his subject, former President Richard Nixon, in the day’s early questioning (see April 6, 1977). Frost attempts to recoup with a line of questioning suggested by his adviser James Reston, Jr., one used in the trial of former Nixon aide John Ehrlichman (see January 1, 1975). Were there no limits to what a president can do, even if the president wants to do something plainly illegal? he asks. Could he do anything despite the law? Burglary? Forgery? Even murder? “If the president does it, that means it’s not illegal,” Nixon retorts. … Frost asks if the dividing line between, for example, a police burglary and the murder of an antiwar protester is only the president’s judgment? Nixon agrees, and adds: “There’s nothing specific that the Constitution contemplates in that respect. I haven’t read every word, every jot and every tittle, but I do know this: That it has been, however, argued that as far as a president is concerned, that in war time, a president does have certain extraordinary powers which would make acts that would otherwise be unlawful, lawful if undertaken for the purpose of preserving the nation and the Constitution, which is essential for the rights we’re all talking about.”
The current POTUS is involved in a controversy about whether or not to kill Americans abroad. Perhaps BHO could study the thoughts of his predecessor…If he is the President, then it is legal.
The next quote is from the fun loving Supreme Court Justice, Antonin Scalia. “I even accept for the sake of argument that sexual orgies eliminate social tensions and ought to be encouraged.” In contrast to the other two quotes, the backup on this came up quickly on Google.
In 2004, Mr. Scalia gave a speech at Harvard University . If you get a chance to read the article, you will see that he made a few other choice comments that night.
Mr. Scalia has shown himself to be quotable before. In an opinion in the Troy Davis case, he said “This Court has never held that the Constitution forbids the execution of a convicted defendant who has had a full and fair trial but is later able to convince a habeas court that he is “actually” innocent.”
The last quote is from another POTUS who is no longer with us, Ronald Reagan. “I am not worried about the deficit. It is big enough to take care of itself.” Mr. Reagan was a professional actor, and he knew the value of a good script.
This slogan is another one that Mr. Obama may find handy. It should be noted that it was a big deal when the national debt (the grand total of the deficits) went over a trillion dollars. This was during the first term of Mr. Reagan. Today, under Mr. Obama, the annual deficit is over a trillion dollars. Sooner or later, you are talking about real money.
PG suffered brain damage trying to find out more about the quote from Mr. Reagan. He went through six pages of google. There must be 25 sites which have lists of quotes from Mr. Reagan, and all of them feature this quote.
What was the context? When did he first say it? One site says it was “(during the latter years of his administration)”. Another site says it was “Said often during his presidency, 1981-1989”. Maybe this is an urban legend.
Texas Death Row Ladies
It has been a big week for capital punishment. Troy Davis lost his battle in Georgia. Rick Perry put another notch on his belt. Alabama is planning to off someone tonight. To top it all off, Texas announced that it will no longer serve a last meal to inmates about to die. They will have to eat regular prison food, which might kill them anyway. Total punishment is a big deal in Texas. They have a web site for Death Row Information. They have ten ladies on death row, who are photo featured in this story. They have a chart with information about the 475 executions performed since 1982. This chart is the source of the final statements quoted below. The rest of this story is final statements made by executed persons in Texas. One is from 1998, one from 2004, and the rest are from 2011. The pictures are from The Library of Congress . The men are part of the conspiracy to kill Abraham Lincoln. The screen shot is from the internet. The death row ladies are from Death Row Information. No, I have no final statement. Lawrence Russell Brewer /// You’re not about to witness an execution, you are about to witness a murder. I am strapped down for something Marcus Rhodes did. I never killed nobody, never. I love you, Mom. I love you, Tali. This is wrong. This whole thing is wrong. I can’t believe you are going to let Marcus Rhodes walk around free. Justice has let me down. Somebody completely screwed this up. I love you too, Mom. Well Warden, if you are going to murder someone, go ahead and do it. Pull the trigger. It’s coming. I can feel it coming. Goodbye. Steven Woods /// I love you Israel. Martin Robles /// Even though I lay on this gurney, seconds away from my death, I am at total peace. May the Lord Jesus Christ be with me. I am at peace. Hate is going on in this world and it has to stop. Hate causes a lifetime of pain. Even though I lay here I am still at peace. I am still a proud American, Texas loud, Texas proud. God bless America, God bless everyone. Let’s do this damn thing. Director Hazelwood, thank you very much. Thank you everyone. Spark, I love you, all of you. L love you Conna. It’s all good, it’s been a great honor. I feel it; I am going to sleep now. Goodnight, 1,2 there it goes. Mark Stroman /// I am sorry for everything that I have done. I’ve hurt a lot of people. For years I have never thought that I deserved any type of forgiveness. Lord Jesus Christ in my life, I know He has forgiven me, I have accepted His forgiveness. I have accepted everything. Let this be final and be done. I take the full blame for this. I am sorry and forgive me. I am truly sorry. I ask for forgiveness. Life goes on and it surely does. I am sorry for the victim’s family for what I had did. May they forgive me. I don’t know if you believe me, life goes on. I am sure it does. To the man to the right of me, I ask for forgiveness for you. Life goes on, it surely does. I ask for forgiveness. I am truly sorry. That is all. Let’s get this show on the road. One more thing, Viva Mexico, Viva Mexico. Humberto Leal /// Yes, sir. I just want to say to all my supporters, family and friends; I love ya’ll and appreciate ya’ll. To the ones representing me today, thank you for everything. The system has failed me. This is a miscarriage of justice. There are people on death row that need help. I love my family. I love you too, Mom. I am alright. I asked the Lord to have mercy on me and I hope He has mercy on these people carrying out this mass slaughter. They have no respect for humanity. To Melanie, I never meant to hurt you. You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I am not asking for your forgiveness. All I have to worry about is God forgiving me. I hope you get better and for the doctors to continue to take care of you. Take care of my mother for me. To everybody, know that I love you and I am ok. Lord, have mercy on my soul. Lord, have mercy on my soul. Lord, have mercy on these peoples’ soul. Life is not supposed to end this way. No more pain and frustration. When I knock at the gates, they will open up and let me in. To my mom and everybody, I love you. I can feel it right now. My life, my life. Milton Mathis /// Yes, sir. Jennifer, I love you. Mom, I love you. Rick, take care of you. For all of you people, I defended myself when I killed your family member. Prison is a bad place. There was eight against me. I didn’t set out to kill him. I am sorry that I killed him, but he would not have been in prison if he was a saint. I hope ya’ll understand that. I love you, baby. I hope people understand the grave injustice by the state. There are 300 people on death row, and everyone is not a monster. Texas is carrying out a very inhumane and injustice. It’s not right to kill anybody just because I killed your people. Everyone changes, right? Life is about experience and people change. I love you, Jennifer. Mom, I love you and all my friends that I have known over the years that have always been there for me. I am ready to teleport. I love you, baby. I hope you don’t find satisfaction in this, watching a human being die. Lee Taylor /// Noel, I love you man. You have been there for me through thick and thin, you and Brigitta. Be there for each other. I am at peace, we have no worries, just as I have no more worries. To the victim’s family, may you be at peace also. Gayland Bradford /// Yes, Tell my sister Tracey, I love you. Nicole, thank you and I love you. Wanda and all of my friends, I love you and thank you for your support. To the State of Texas, I am an innocent man. Never trust a court-appointed attorney. I am ready Warden. Thank you, Brad, I’m sorry. Check that DNA, check Scott. Here we go. Lord Jesus, Jesus. Cary D. Kerr /// No last statement given. Timothy Wayne Adams /// First of all I would like to give my sincere apology to Amy’s family. We caused a lot of heartache, grief, pain and suffering, and I am sorry. I know it won’t bring her back. I would like to sing, I would like to sing for that person’s dead. The old is gone. I am not the same person that I used to be, that person is dead. It’s up to you if you would find it in your heart to forgive. As for my family, I am sorry I let you down. I caused a lot of heartache, and I ask for your forgiveness. I am not crying for myself, I am crying for the lost and those that are dying for their sins, those that are committing suicide, those that don’t know God and have never been set free. I’ve been locked up 13 years. I am not locked up inside, all of these years I have been free. Christ has changed me. Even though I have to die for my mistake, he paid for mine by wages I could never pay. Here I am a big strong youngster, crying like a baby. I am man enough to show my emotions and I am sorry. I am sorry for everything. I wish I could take it back, but I can’t. Michael Wayne Hall /// Yes sir, I would like to say to all of you – the Thornton family and Jerry Dean’s family that I am so sorry. I hope God will give you peace with this. Baby, I love you. Ron, give Peggy a hug for me. Everybody has been so good to me. I love all of you very much. I am going to be face to face with Jesus now. Warden Baggett, thank all of you so much. You have been so good to me. I love all of you very much. I will see you all when you get there. I will wait for you. Karla Faye Tucker /// Yeah. The only statement I want to make is that I am an innocent man – convicted of a crime I did not commit. I have been persecuted for 12 years for something I did not do. From God’s dust I came and to dust I will return – so the earth shall become my throne. I gotta go, road dog. I love you Gabby. [Remaining portion of statement omitted due to profanity.] Cameron Todd Willingham.
Fresh And Safe
“The Chinese government has banned a traditional carnival in the east of the country in which dogs are eaten after being chopped up alive in the street following a public uproar that the festival was cruel, state media reported on Wednesday. The tradition in Qianxi in the wealthy coastal province of Zhejiang dates back 600 years to celebrate a local military victory and is normally held every October, the official Xinhua news agency said. “The ancient fair was replaced by a modern commodity fair in the 1980s, but dog-eating has been kept as a tradition,” it reported. “However, vendors began to butcher dogs in public a few years ago to show their dog meat is fresh and safe, as a way to ease buyers’ worry that the meat may be refrigerator-preserved or even contaminated.”
HT to World Class Stupid for this story. If you look to Mr. Google for more information, you will see the original Reuters story repeated. When you view the original, you will see links to stories “you might also like”. Some of these stories: “France stakes future of EU on fate of euro currency”, “PETA to launch porn site in name of animal rights”, “Axe-wielding man kills four in China”.
A related story is Koreans beat the heat by eating dog soup. “The reason why I eat dog soup is because it boosts my energy, even when I’m most tired,” remarked 56-year-old Shin Gwan-sup who was interviewed yesterday by Reuters reporter Tae-Yi Kim .”Compared to other meats, it has more protein and less fat. I think it is healthy and clean, a more suitable meat for us.”
PG tuned into the Repub debate during while Rick Santorum was talking about DADT. If PG had tuned in a minute earlier, he could have hear the crowd boo an American soldier on combat deployment in Iraq. (To be fair to the crowd, it was just a few scattered people that shouted boo. It was not as enthusiastic as the cheers for Rick Perry wasting 234 235 prisoners.)
Before the debate, PG listened to a conversation with Christopher Dickey. He is the son of James Dickey, and an accomplished journalist. Mr. Dickey got a job as a stand in when the film “Deliverance” was made. He was standing in for Ned Beatty when they filmed the most famous scene in the movie. (PG hears the bs detector beeping as he writes this.) Later in the interview, Mr. Dickey discusses his mother.
Mr. DICKEY: She died in a hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. LAMB: Of what?Mr. DICKEY: She died of a complication from cirrhosis of the liver, or from hardening of the liver, where you get varicose veins in your esophagus and then they rupture and you bleed to death through your mouth. LAMB: And was she a drinker all her life? Mr. DICKEY: She drank all her life, but she was a heavy drinker the last 10 years of her life, a really heavy drinker, co–a co–a constant drinker. Anybody who was at our house in the ’70s remembers the tinkling of ice cubes at about 6 in the morning when she would get up and start making breakfast for everybody and make herself a Cutty Sark and soda.

11:08 PM
Democracy Now had a six hour live broadcast outside the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson, GA. (Amy Goodman called it the Death Row Prison.) Inside the big house, Troy Davis was put to death. He passed away at 11:08 pm.
The night was full of drama. At the original execution time of 7:00 pm, a cheer went up in the crowd. Word was that a reprieve had been granted. The United States Supreme Court was going to be consulted on the case. At roughly 10:30, word got back that SCOTUS was not interested in the case. The execution followed soon after. The fishwrapper had a reporter on the scene. This is part of their report:
Then he asked Davis if he has any final words. Yes, the condemned man said and he raised his head so he could look at Mark MacPhail Jr., who was an infant when his father was murdered, and William MacPhail, the dead officer’s brother. “I’m sorry for your loss,” Davis said. Mark MacPhail, who was leaning forward, and his uncle did not move. They stared at the man who killed their loved one.
“I did not personally kill your son, father and brother,” Davis said. “I am innocent. “ He asked his family and friends to continue to search for the truth. And to the prison officials he said “may God have mercy on your souls. May God bless your souls.” He then lowered his head. He turned down an offer for a prayer.”
One part of the Democracy Now broadcast caught PG’s attention. Amy Goodman was talking to Kathryn Hamoudah, who is connected to Georgians for alternatives to the death penalty. (PG suspects that Ms. Hamoudah was one of the people who was rude to him in July, when PG attended an execution.) Ms. Hamoudah mentioned a company called Rainbow Medical Associates. RMA has a contract with the state to provide Doctors that supervise executions. (A prison employee sticks the needle in.) For these services, RMA gets $18,000 per execution.
Chamblee54 has written about Troy Davis five times. ( one, two , three , four , five ) Pictures today are from The Library of Congress.
Six Years Of Chamblee 54

On this day in 2005, the Chamblee54 blog posted a story. In 2006 and 2007 blogspot hosted Chamblee54. In early 2008, mysterious technical issues forced a move to WordPress. The story continued in 2009 and 2010. Writing for a potential audience of one billion people is addictive. It has been a learning experience. Thank you for stopping by.

Two Boxes
PG was suffering through jury duty. After a couple of hours, the worst was over. The drive to the courthouse, the speech from the judge (two of them today), the video…it was over. There was nothing to do now but read a magazine. (The video featured Amanda Williams , the drug court judge from hell.)
A man wearing a judge’s robe stood in front of the microphone. He was a Gwinnett county judge, who was helping out with a case. (All the Dekalb county judges had to recuse themselves. The man pleaded guilty anyway.) The Gwinnett dude wanted to say thank you for your jury service, but he had a story to throw in. The judge said he later found out that the story was true.
A young man was working at King and Spalding, and his mentor was Griffin Bell. Mr. Bell was the Attorney General under Jimmy Carter, and was a big deal in legal circles. The man walked by Mr. Bell’s office one day, and saw that he was reading the fishwrapper. The young attorney knocked on the door, and asked if he could talk.
It seems like whenever a neighbor had jury duty, they would seek out the young lawyer. You’re a lawyer, they would say, do you know how to get out of jury duty? This troubled the young attorney, and he asked his mentor what he should say.
Griffin Bell slammed the fishwrapper to his desk, and steam started to come out of his ears. “Young man, this country was founded on two boxes. The ballot box and the jury box. If you don’t jump into both feet first, then you don’t belong in this country”.
It was not much longer before PG was sent home. While waiting to get out of the parking deck, the radio told of a decision by the board of pardons and paroles. They refused clemency for Troy Davis . Pictures today are from ” The Special Collections and Archives,Georgia State University Library”
Four More Years

The United States is currently in the second longest streak of Presidents living to finish their term in office. The last POTUS to die in office was John F. Kennedy, who met his maker on November 22, 1963. In a few weeks, that will be 48 years ago.
The first President to not finish his term for mortal reasons was William Henry Harrison. He perished April 4, 1841. This was roughly 52 years after George Washington was sworn in, on April 30, 1789. If the POTUS can get through *four more years* without passing away, then America will have a new record. This will seem odd to many of a certain age, who remember the Kennedy shooting as though it happened yesterday.
On the other side of the Atlantic, a four year countdown is in progress. Victoria served as Queen of England from June 20, 1837 to January 22, 1901, or 63 years. The current monarch, Elizabeth II, began her reign February 6, 1952. This was 59 years ago. In another four years, unless her purse explodes and kills her, Elizabeth will be the longest serving ruler of England. She recently passed George III, who served 59 years. Elizabeth did not have a revolution in the colonies to concern her.

The Avitable Pledge
One of the digital depths that PG sinks to is a blog called Avitable. (The spell check suggestions are Inevitable, Visitable, Veritable, Editable) The perp is a Florida resident named Adam Heath Avitable. AHA is, the last time we checked, a stand up comedian. This is a humor blog. When PG last checked up on Avitable, he was promoting something called “The Avitable Pledge”. It is repeated below. PG looked at it, and agreed with most of it. There was something about dealing with bullies, which can get you mixed up in useless battles. You should never wrestle with a hog…you will get dirty, and the pig enjoys it. There is one more reason for PG to not sign TAP. Almost no one reads Chamblee54. Non spam comments are few and far between. While being thoughtful and honest are good traits, it does little good when no one is watching. If a tree falls in an empty forest, does the chain saw make a noise? This blog is always looking for text to put between the pictures. As a compromise, Chamblee54 is going to post TAP, in a rainbow font, and post pictures from The Library of Congress . It is worth what it costs you. If you feel the need to sign TAP, then, by all means go to Avitable and sign it. You will no doubt be a better person. The Avitable Pledge I am proud to have higher brain functions. I will apply critical thinking and react with clear thought when I am faced with unknown, stressful or difficult situations. I pledge to view ignorance and anonymity as weaknesses. Those who wield those traits as weapons are to be pitied but they have earned whatever punishment occurs. They do not deserve our sympathy or respect. I believe that there is no situation that cannot be approached with a sense of humor. That said, each person has at least one thing that they will never find funny or appreciate, and that’s okay. I stand up against bullying and harassment in all its forms. I will not shy away from calling out bullies and harassers in public forums, and I will not tacitly support their actions by remaining silent. I refuse to apply any standards to others that I will not apply to myself. Only by striving to be the best can I expect that from any other person. I want to see your point of view. Putting myself in your shoes can be difficult, but I will try my hardest to realize that my perspective is rarely objective. I affirm that I will be honest with you and trust you at your word. If at all possible I will avoid lying and omitting truths. There is never a good reason to lie and there are hundreds of reasons not to. If you lie to me and betray that trust, that’s not my fault. I’m an elitist condescending intellectual perverted asshole, but I manage to follow this pledge to the best of my ability. What about you? Will you take the Avitable pledge? P.S. This post originally started as a parody of the Mom Pledge, but then as I started writing it, I realized I wanted to write a sincere post. For those of you who are getting sick of my serious posts, here is a joke for you: You’ve got to hand it to midgets. No, literally. They usually can’t reach.
The Report On The Idiot Box

This is a repost from four years ago today. Some say the we won the war in Babylon. It is too late for one soldier to enjoy. Pictures are from The Library of Congress.
It started out as a beautiful late summer day, but by 5:45 I was over it. This is normal, and being tired from a job is better than well rested unemployment. The traffic backed up at a key part of my ride, and I took another route the rest of the way. All in all, not the best mood, but not the worst either.
Getting home from work is the worst time of day for confrontations. I am tired, hungry, and more than a little bit crazy. I get in the house, leave the lunch dishes in the kitchen, go turn on the computer, and come back to fix a sandwich. My brother is watching the news in the room next to the kitchen. As I pull two slices of bread out of the sack, the report on the idiot box has a familiar turn. Something about the church where he was once an alter boy. But today, it was the scene of a tribute to his too short life.
It gets worse. I don’t remember the exact words, but it was a report from a soldier’s funeral in Carroll County. And it got worse and worse. Finally, I snap. I hope you are enjoying that poison. Another brave man has died in that useless war
There is plenty of anger to go around. My brother is watching the noise while I am fixing dinner. The TV station is exploiting the grief of the soldier’s family, to sell advertising. But most of all, I am boiling mad at THAT STINKING COCAINE ADDICT IN THE WHITE HOUSE.
The Mean Spirited Left
The following conversation was performed in August of this year. It is regarding a discussion on Blogginheads.tv. It was a religion oriented chat, with an emphasis on Michele Bachmann. PG made a comment, and the fun started.
chamblee54 wrote on 08/14/2011 at 10:50 AM – 1-Ms. Bailey has the sound up way too loud. There is a lot of distortion. The good news is that her lighting is flattering, and her camera is focused. 2- The New Yorker piece had some interesting comments about Mrs. Bachmann’s “career” as a tax lawyer. Her former co workers are not kind. While people are upset about her religious opinions, maybe a look at her work ethic, and her claims about it, are in order. 3- Marcus Bachmann, judging from the article, is not a very nice man. Maybe submission means that she WILL let him use her lipstick.
chamblee54 wrote on 08/14/2011 at 11:07 AM – Quoting Ocean:” Finally the GOP has a great sense of humor! “ – – – Are they dancing the YMCA?
Quoting bkjazfan: “A Los Angeles radio talk show host, John Phillips, who shared a dinner table at an event with the Bachmanns said that Michelle’s husband makes Paul Linde look like John Wayne.” – – – We have already confused Marion Morrison with John Wayne Gacy. Maybe it is John Wayne Bobbitt we should think of.
Sulla the Dictator wrote on 08/15/2011 at 03:29 AM – Quoting chamblee54: ” Marcus Bachmann, judging from the article, is not a very nice man. Maybe submission means that she WILL let him use her lipstick”. – – – 1. It is interesting how the spouses of conservatives are not off the table. From Nancy Reagan to Cindy McCain to Marcus Bachmann.
2. I have no reason to believe Marcus Bachmann is gay. But the mean spirited left seems to believe so. I notice, though, that they take the opportunity to free themselves from PC shackles to throw a variety of insulting, “hateful”, anti-gay attacks at the guy. Just like they can make misogynistic attacks against his wife, or Sarah Palin, or Anne Coulter, or any Conservative female. The left wing commentariat is starting to resemble one of those original Star Trek dystopias/morality tales.
I suspect that if I were to make jokes about Barney Frank cross dressing, or being an effete homosexual, it wouldn’t be as ‘cute’….and in his case there’s not even a dispute.

Quoting Sulla the Dictator: “2. I have no reason to believe Marcus Bachmann is gay. But the mean spirited left seems to believe so.” – – – Mr. Bachman has mannerisms that would get him beat up in Middle School. It really doesn’t matter who he plays with. The man is a sissy. When you consider how he makes their living, then the jokes just come naturally. Mix in some of the things that his *submissive* wife says, and it is an opportunity for comedians.

I think the left got pretty even with the Bush daughter jokes. Quoting chamblee54: “Mr. Bachman has mannerisms that would get him beat up in Middle School.” – – – And so the comics of the left are like playground bullies? Agreed.
