Two Law Enforcement Officers died in reported incidents this week. “Colorado Springs Police Chief Pete Carey also said during the press conference that the officers were responding to a motor vehicle theft, encountered a suspect, Manuel Zetina, struggled with him and then gun shots rang out around 4 p.m. local time. A civilian was injured and rushed to a local hospital. Two El Paso County Sheriff officers were struck and are hospitalized. A male suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.” “El Paso County Sheriff Bill Elder said Deputy Micah Flick, 34, was killed on what was his 11th anniversary at the sheriff’s office.” (127)
” Authorities identified Officer Chase Maddox, 26, as the Locust Grove police officer that was killed during the incident.” “According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, deputies Michael D. Corley and Ralph Sidwell Callaway were serving a bench warrant on a suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Tierre Guthrie for failure to appear in Locust Grove municipal court. “It became apparent that the suspect was not going to go with police, which is why a Locust Grove officer was called in to assist,” said Henry County Sheriff Kenneth McBrayer. An altercation occurred and the suspect fired shots through the door, authorities said. The suspect was shot and killed by police on the scene, which was inside a home on St. Francis Court near the Tanger Outlet.” (135)
” Police responded to a Main Street residence just before 4 p.m. for a report of an alleged assault involving the victim, who was a household member. The reported victim of the assault was no longer in the residence when the police arrived. His identity and whereabouts are not known at this time. Police located the suspect (Alan Greenough) inside the residence, which was dead-bolted from the inside. By the time officers were able to enter the residence the suspect had fled the premises, say police. Reading police searched the surrounding areas for the man until around 4:30 p.m., when a Reading police officer located and fired at the suspect.” (121)
“Sheriff’s deputies were searching for the man, who was suspected of criminal activity. They found him in his backyard in the 40,000 block of 176th Street East in Lake Los Angeles, an unincorporated community east of Palmdale. A sheriff’s spokesman said that although the man was initially cooperative, he suddenly turned and punched a deputy, sending him to the ground. The man then jumped onto the fallen deputy and continued to attack him, the spokesman said. A second deputy used a Taser on the man. But according to a spokesman, the shock had no effect. The man then turned and tackled the deputy to the ground, the spokesman said. A neighbor intervened and the man was ultimately placed in handcuffs. Soon after, deputies reportedly noticed the man’s breathing was labored and that he was unresponsive. They tried to revive him with CPR, as did officials with the fire department, but their efforts were unsuccessful, officials said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of his death remains under investigation. Neighbors told NBC4 that the man was a former Marine who may have suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.” (122)
“Authorities say deputies were called to the area because a young man (Anthony Weber) was reported pointing a handgun at a motorist. Arriving deputies said the boy had a handgun tucked into his waistband before he ran, prompting the deputies to chase after him. According to sheriff’s spokeswoman Deputy Wally Bracks, when the boy turned toward the deputies, they fired at him. “The subject was struck several times in the upper body by gunfire and collapsed at the location,” she said. He was pronounced dead at the scene and no gun has been found yet. “Deputies saw a gun when the shooting occurred. Then with the 30 to 40 people that came out of the apartment complex. They were trying to maintain security of that and they believe that at some point somebody may have reached in and may have taken the gun,” said LA County Sheriff’s Department Capt. “James Hobbs, 59, was a fugitive on the run when he was shot and killed at a St. Augustine hotel Tuesday. The U.S. Marshals Office and the FBI were tracking him since he fled from New Hampshire to Florida following a warrant for his arrest on charges of aggravated sexual assault on a child. Previously, Hobbs practiced law as an attorney in New Hampshire until he was charged with defrauding several clients out of thousands of dollars back in 2005 and the Supreme Court requested he be disbarred…. Public Information Officer Chuck Mulligan said all three law enforcement officers fired multiple shots after Hughes answered the door at the hotel. “At some point, he did not comply and made sudden movements that all three people perceived as a threat and each person fired their gun multiple times,” Mulligan said, they cannot rule out “suicide by cop” as an attempt by Hobbs since he was not armed at the door, nor did he have any weapons in his room.” (128)
“At about 9:30 a.m., authorities heard that the man shot a woman at a shopping center in the 1600 block of South Dixie Highway in Lake Worth, just north of Lantana. When Fire-Rescue workers arrived, the woman was gone; people told them she had been driven to a hospital. But she was in the car with the man (Hugo Steven Selva) who shot her. “About 15 minutes after that, we started getting calls that there was a vehicle, a black Nissan Rogue, on the northbound lane going south,” Bradshaw told reporters along the highway’s off-ramp. The sheriff’s office said late Wednesday that it believes the man entered I-95 at Southern Boulevard. A Palm Beach Post editor said he was heading to work at about 9:45 a.m. and was northbound just north of 10th Avenue North when a black SUV raced south past him in the breakdown lane, coming so close it shook his car. The chase ended with the three crashes near Lantana Road, where the motorist’s car became disabled and caught fire. Several deputies and an FHP trooper confronted the driver, whom authorities hadn’t identified as of Wednesday evening. The trooper tried to subdue him with a Taser, but it misfired, Bradshaw said. At that point, he said, a deputy standing alongside shot and killed the man.” (131)
“Mono was struck by gunfire after deputies responded to the 600 block of Avenida Sevilla, located in the retirement community of Laguna Woods Village, following a report of “shots fired” in the area on Tuesday afternoon. Contractor Dennis Metzler, who witnessed the deputy-involved shooting, told KTLA he was in the process of remodeling Mono’s home when he and one his colleagues — a realtor he identified as Jennifer — stopped by the residence to deliver floor plans to their client. Metzler said he was waiting outside while his colleague chatted with the man about the remodel when the situation abruptly escalated. “He started screaming and yelling and doing things, then he threatened me by name. Said he wanted to kill me. Then I heard Jennifer say, ‘Paul put the gun down,'” Metzler recalled. At that point, he called 911, and authorities arrived on scene around 2:10 p.m. Deputies entered the home and ordered the man to surrender and drop his weapon, according to Metzler. He said he heard his client yell for deputies to shoot him. It was unclear what transpired immediately after that, but Metzler recalled hearing five gunshots. After that, Mono was transported to a hospital in unknown condition.” (132)
“Police say a 35-year-old Olympia woman died after she was “chemically restrained.” Olympia Police Lt. Sam Costello says firefighters responded to a fire alarm at an apartment complex early Wednesday and learned that a woman (Vaneesa L. Hopson) had pulled the fire alarm while in crisis. Police say the woman apparently was “suffering from mental illness and/or acute effects of substance abuse.” Police say officers talked to the woman and determined she needed to be detained for a mental health evaluation. Police say the officers got the woman into restraints and that she began fighting them. Police say officers placed the woman on the ground and restrained her while paramedics administered medication to her. Police say shortly thereafter the woman stopped breathing and efforts to revive her were unsuccessful. Costello said he didn’t know exactly what type of medication she was given.” (133)
“A call was circulated for a memorial march this evening, drawing links between disability justice and police abolition. Approximately 50 people gathered at Percival Landing. There were a few words shared, then a moment of silence for Vaneesa, then the group took to the streets led by a banner which read “John T. Williams – Kayla Moore – Vaneesa Hopson – Disability Justice Means Abolish the State.” The group marched to city hall and back to Percival Landing chanting “Say her name! Vaneesa Hopson! and “OPD are murderers!” Protesters wrote graffiti including “ACAB” and other expressions of hatred for the police. Many bystanders were engaged in conversation and informed that OPD killed someone this morning some joined the march and the numbers grew. It’s important to not let the city sweep Vaneesa under the rug. Memory is a weapon. This whole time the police were noticeably absent. One would not typically expect them to take such a hands-off approach to a 40+ person march with a significant faction in black. The group turned around again after reaching the western end of downtown, spotted a police cruiser on Capitol, and walked toward it. Upon coming within half a block of the cruiser, it pulled a u-turn and sped away from the group, which then started up 4th again. At this point an angry driver in a silver Toyota Tundra (Washington license plate C02957G) decided he was tired of being reminded of the violence of the state and began inching forward into the crowd. Many people got in front of him to prevent him from plowing through. Unfortunately he then accelerated, hitting multiple protesters and sending several people flying. He sped off going east through downtown. At this point it got pretty chaotic. Medics got the most seriously injured person – who hit the pavement face down – off to the sidewalk and began administering first aid. Others attempted to keep other motorists back, at which point another angry driver in a small blue car pulled a gun and began threatening the crowd. Then the cops showed up in riot gear with rifles drawn, and advanced on the group from the direction of Washington Street. Of course the cops ignored people yelling “He’s got a gun!” The cops pointed their “less lethal” guns at the crowd including the medics and their patients forcing them to clear the area.” (133)
“Harris was seen driving a car on Golf Course Road and a police officer recognized him as someone who had a federal warrant for his arrest that listed him as “armed and dangerous,” according to police. Harris was also wanted in connection with a recent felony assault that occurred in a different jurisdiction in the Bay Area, and was a person of interest in a previous Antioch homicide case, authorities said. … After being contacted by police on Thursday, Harris did not respond to an officer’s commands and was shot while in his vehicle. When he was removed from the car, a realistic-looking BB gun fell to the ground from Harris’ waist.” (134)
“According to GBI spokesperson Nelly Miles, the situation began around 2:20 p.m. when Atlanta officers spotted a stolen vehicle out of Gwinnett County and requested help from the Georgia State Patrol. Miles said Atlanta officers attempted to pull over the vehicle but the driver refused. A trooper then attempted to disable the vehicle with a PIT maneuver on Doane Street but it failed. The suspect continued trying to evade the trooper but ended up hitting an Atlanta police patrol vehicle. “From that point during the collision, the trooper did fire shots striking him,” Miles said. But the driver continued his getaway attempt ultimately crashing into another car along the street. What followed is still a matter of investigation, however, Miles said. What she could confirm was that the trooper is OK while the suspect is dead. It’s still unclear if the suspect was killed by the shots, the collisions or a combination of the two.” (136)
“It happened at about 4 p.m. on Honey Lane in Grant-Valkaria. A family member said Ricardo Enrique Colon, 35, was in the process of cutting his arms. Deputies Kelly Dobson and Jose Santos responded to the 911 call and tried to stop him. “He aggressively came toward them, and again, they attempted to use (something) less lethal in the deployment of a Taser, but that was unsuccessful,” said Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey. Deputies said the man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. It’s unclear if both deputies opened fire or how many times the man was shot. Colon died Friday at the hospital.” (137)

4 of the cases were in Georgia. “A man died while in custody after he was tasered by a local sheriff’s office on Saturday, officials confirm. Now, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the case. According to the GBI, officials were moving Charles “Charlie” Williams, 30, from one facility to the Barrow County Detention Center around 2:30 that afternoon. Williams was already under arrest through the Auburn Police Department for charges of battery and cruelty to children, related to a physical confrontation in Auburn, Georgia. According to the GBI, Williams “became combative before making it into the jail. He fought with deputies for several moments and did damage to the patrol car he was transported in.” The GBI investigation indicates a Williams managed to move his handcuffs from behind his back to his front. Personnel tried to talk him out of the vehicle, but he continued to struggle. Sometime during that altercation, a Barrow County deputy used a taser on him, though it reportedly did not subdue him. The GBI has not released how many times he was hit with the taser. During the altercation, he stopped fighting back when he “experienced medical duress and stopped breathing,” the GBI writes.” (098)
“Investigators said a little after 1 a.m., a gunman first opened fire on New Peachtree Road, in a drive-by shooting. Chamblee police found a man who was shot in the hand. Ten minutes later, investigators said a 911 caller alerted them the man was now shooting at passing cars from the parking lot of a QuikTrip on Chamblee-Tucker Road. Police said as they arrived, the shooter ran to Quantum Lane and kept shooting. Officers said they were afraid for their safety and the public’s safety, so an officer fired one shot, which later killed the man.” (099)
“A Clayton police officer initiated a traffic stop for speeding just after 3 a.m. Thursday on Georgia Highway 441 South. The Honda Accord was traveling 68 miles per hour in a 45 miles per hour zone. When the officer initiated the stop, the Accord accelerated and a chase ensued. The Accord turned onto Rickman Road and then crashed on a private drive at 547 Warwoman Road. When officers arrived at the scene, the officer gave verbal commands for the subject to remain in the vehicle. The subject then exited the vehicle through the rear window and made his way onto the roof of the vehicle. The subject, armed with a knife, jumped off the hood of the vehicle toward the officer, advancing and swinging the knife. The officer fired multiple shots at the subject, striking the subject.” video (116)
“The GBI said a suspect robbed an auto parts store and then tried to carjack someone across the street. The suspect encountered police and there was a shootout. “We do have at least one witness who actually saw him shoot at Atlanta police officers. The officers returned fire and from that particular point it just turned into a running gun battle,” GBI spokesperson Nelly Miles said. Authorities said the suspect was shot and killed. No officers were injured.” (119)
“Baltimore police media relations Chief T.J. Smith said the incident started as a traffic stop on Westgate Avenue and that the driver fled. The Foxtrot helicopter tracked the vehicle as it took off. On video, the suspect, Billy Lewis Rucker, 33, can be heard yelling, “Y’all can’t stop me.” The vehicle was found abandoned near Roslyn Avenue and Gwynns Falls Parkway, and officers spotted Rucker and a female passenger on Gwynns Falls, police said. Police said Rucker ran, pulled out a gun and pointed it at officers. During a foot chase, Rucker dropped a magazine from a gun, police said. Police said the footage shows a muzzle flash from the gun before the officer fired his service weapon, striking Rucker, who died at a hospital.” video (101)
“Police responded to a 911 call around 4:30 p.m. reporting that an emotionally disturbed man had locked himself inside his bedroom on Reservoir Avenue. When they arrived, police stood outside the bedroom door of Dwayne Pritchett, 48, and tried to get him to come out. Cops said Pritchett suddenly opened the door and they spotted drugs and a gun on the floor. When they attempted to put him in handcuffs, police said Pritchett tried to pull a gun from one of the holster of an officer. Officers gained control of him and pulled him from the bedroom, but Pritchett then lost consciousness and became unresponsive, according to police. EMS tried to revive him on the scene and he was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police said Pritchett had a warrant out for his arrest. A cause of death has not yet been determined.” “The officers entered the room and began to handcuff Pritchett — who sources say had a lengthy rap sheet. Pritchett was reportedly sweating profusely when he tried to pull the cop’s gun from its holster. Pritchett passed out suddenly after officers removed him from his bedroom, police said. EMS administered Narcan — a medication used to block the effects of opioids — and tried to save Pritchett’s life by administering CPR. He was taken to New York-Presbyterian The Allen Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Pritchett has a history of drug abuse and has been in rehab before, a police source added.” (103)
“Capt. Sekou Kinebrew told reporters that a bicycle officer reported at about 7:30 a.m. Monday that he saw a car driving erratically near Broad and Bigler. Kinebrew said the driver (Khalil Lawal) “was apparently attempting to run people over.” One person was hit by the vehicle but the injuries weren’t believed to be life-threatening. Another driver had blocked the path of the suspect’s car, and the off-duty officer approached him and struggled with him. During the struggle, the officer shot the man once in the head, critically injuring him. The man later died, police said.” “Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross … said that he had “concerns” about the incident. “I do have some concerns about the shooting, in particular whether all the shots were necessary,” … Ross also addressed initial reports that Lawal was targeting multiple pedestrians with his car. “Right now we have not been able to confirm this at all,” Ross said. “The only thing we know is of this one incident at this point in time that we are still investigating.” Police also don’t believe the incident was a case of domestic terrorism.” (104)
“… the incident began unfolding late Wednesday morning when Nicollet County sheriff’s deputies spotted a vehicle in Lafayette that had been reported stolen in New Ulm. A pursuit ensued involving six law enforcement agencies. Eventually the male driver was identified and the pursuit terminated for safety reasons. A half-hour later, the vehicle was spotted in St. James. Officers followed the vehicle until the driver got stuck in a snowbank. He then fled into a business in the 600 block of Second Avenue South, where he hid alone in an office. Officers from the St. James Police Department, Watonwan County sheriff’s office and Minnesota State Patrol entered the business. Officers deployed multiple stun gun rounds before one officer discharged a firearm, striking Gilbert Salas.” (108)
“A caller reported a male at the residence was bleeding from self-inflicted injuries and was feeling “suicidal,” Dutton said. “When deputies got to the residence [the caller] told them he had a gun, a pistol,” Dutton said. Dutton confirmed that fact in an interview with the Independent Record Friday morning. Deputies attempted to engage the suspect in verbal negotiations to set down the gun for about an hour, Dutton said. “Unfortunately, he forced the hand of a deputy, and the deputy in protecting himself and other deputies had to shoot,” Dutton said.” (117)
“Massey’s video shows fire personnel following slowly behind Charlie Shoupe as he walked around, holding a knife, for about 3 minutes. Massey said he was standing outside the apartment building when he saw a white man, later identified as Shoupe, “come outside screaming ‘shoot me.’” He began recording the scene. Shoupe appeared to be using a knife to harm himself and he was threatening fire department officials who were responding to the mother’s 911 call, Massey said. When a CMPD officer arrived, Shoupe and the fire personnel appear to walk toward the direction of the patrol car. Police say Flynn gave verbal commands for Shoupe to drop his knife and that Flynn “retreated multiple times to try to put distance between him and Mr. Shoupe.” “Mr. Shoupe refused to comply and instead continued to charge at Officer Flynn, closing the distance between the two of them. Officer Flynn then fired his service weapon, striking Mr. Shoupe,” CMPD said in a news statement.” (118)
“The sheriff’s office got a 911 call at 9:20 a.m. Friday about a man who had fired a shot inside a home on FM 2405, north of Winters, while family members were inside. He was “believed to be in mental distress,” said Squyres. When deputies and officers from the Winters Police Department arrived, they saw a man inside the home with a rifle. After failing to establish communication, they called the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office which brought its tactical team and a negotiator. Department of Public Safety officers and Texas Rangers also came to assist. Still unable to establish communication, officers saw the man pacing back and forth, holding the rifle. At one point, he pointed the rifle at officers through a window. About 1:15 p.m., the man walked out onto the patio, shouldered his rifle and aimed it at deputies. “Deputies were forced to fire a single round, striking the individual,” Squyres said. A neighbor who did not want to be identified told KTXS “he was just a sick man. He was sick. He didn’t know they were cops. He thought it was someone trying to break into his house.” (120)

According to a preliminary investigation, Boyd began shooting at the officers and police returned fire. A metro police sergeant was also injured during the shooting.” (080)
“The shooting happened shortly before 4 a.m. near the Shell gas station on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Sugar Hill. Police received a call about an armed man walking along the roadway. When officers confronted the man, he allegedly pulled a gun out of his waistband and began to raise it towards them. The man has been identified as 27-year-old Steven Hutchins of Buford. One of the officers then fired shots at Hutchins, striking him at least once. Hutchins was later pronounced dead at the scene.” (087)
“Our deputies at that time attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle that was driving erratically.” The pursuit led to the decision for stop-sticks to be deployed several times, flattening three of the car’s tires. Lawson continued north on U.S. 1. A pit maneuver, used by patrol cars to push vehicles, was used to bring an end to the chase near Rockledge. Turbeville then approached Lawson, then fired once Lawson made his “overt action.” (070)
“Oneida police arrived around 4:15 a.m. Monday on Route 5 in Oneida in response to a call about a man, later identified as Havener, standing in the street, shouting at drivers, Thompson said. Oneida police found Havener and described his conduct as “just generally being very disorderly … flagging down vehicles and obstructing traffic,” he said. Officers also discovered a disabled vehicle in the snow bank, which Havener had driven and possibly crashed, Thompson said. Thompson would not say whether there was anyone else was in the vehicle. Thompson said officers tried talking him out of the road, but Havener became violent. “What our officers did was try to verbally direct this person out of the roadway and see what the problem was,” Thompson said. “He remained very violent and attempted to fight with our officers.” … Thompson said Oneida police called for backup from other local police agencies. First, Canastota police officers arrived, followed by Madison County Sheriff’s Office deputies and then New York State Police officers, he said. “At some point during the encounter a Taser was deployed,” Thompson said. “At 5:20 p.m., the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office released a statement on the matter, explaining that at approximately 10:47 a.m. Edward C. Gandy, age 47, of Dock Street, in Millville, called 911 and reported that he had a loaded firearm and was located at High and McNeal streets in Millville. According to the statement, police were called to the area and located Gandy. The statement goes on to say: “An Officer Involved Shooting took place. Gandy was shot and later pronounced deceased. “A man and woman were arguing at a gas station on the 3000 block of Cortez Road West at about 9:20 p.m., and once deputies arrived, the man (Corey Mobley) drove off in a vehicle, the sheriff’s office said. An investigator went outside, and the man and several deputies became involved in an altercation. “They tased him,” Entrekin said. “According to Conroe police, everything began with a home invasion Wednesday morning at the victim’s home on Tyler Lane. He and his 12-year-old son were reportedly bound with duct tape. Conroe police Chief Philip Dupuis said two suspects took the father (Ulises Valladares) with them and left the child behind. The boy later managed to get free and run to a neighbor’s house where police were called. Over the next three hours, the kidnappers called the man’s brother and made demands. Conroe police contacted the FBI for assistance in the case. Authorities tracked down two of the three suspects to a hotel in the Clear Lake area, along Bay Area Boulevard near the Gulf Freeway. The suspects were arrested. Police were able to locate the victim to a home on Elbert Street in northeast Houston, where authorities moved in and made contact with the third remaining suspect. The details of exactly what happened are not yet clear, but one FBI agent fired shots.” (087)

Around 6:30 p.m., the San Antonio Police Department says that an officer-involved shooting occurred on Loop 410 near San Pedro following a robbery at a nearby Target. SAPD Chief William McManus says that the suspect, a man in his early 20s, robbed the store and then used a BMX-type bike to escape security. He went on to say that security called police and officers in the area pursued the suspect as he rode his bike onto eastbound Loop 410. Edwards, a habitual traffic offender, was driving with a revoked license, and in fact was facing yet another felony charge of driving without a license at the time of the shooting. He also may have been using license plates from another car, which might explain why police were attempting to pull him over. In addition, Edwards has an extensive criminal history in Whiteside County dating back 20 years. Ten orders of protection by at least three women had been filed against him since 1999. Tony Slocum says Cass County sheriff’s deputies were called about 4 a.m. Saturday to a home about a man stabbing himself with a knife. Slocum says a confrontation followed and deputies shot the man, later identified as William Pollard. The deputies weren’t injured. Pollard was pronounced dead at the scene.” (095)

Police barged in the door and found the woman holding a glock pistol to her head, McManus said. The officers went into the home, and the subject of the warrant – Shayla Lynette Towles Pierce – was handcuffed, then gunfire came from the second floor. A man left the home, gunfire was exchanged, and he was killed. The marshal died, and two officers were injured. … Christopher David Hill died Thursday after he was shot during a police-involved shooting in Harrisburg. The officer killed in the gunfire was Deputy U.S. Marshal Christopher David Hill, 45, of Conewago Township, York County. Hill was shot in the chest.” (062)

“Terry Amons of Antioch was killed by Pittsburg police inside a Nation’s parking lot. A witness reported what they described as a drug deal between two cars outside the Nation’s on Railroad Ave., according to Pittsburg Police Department. When officers arrived, they found the car described as the one from which drugs were being sold. Two officers approached the car and noticed a man sitting in the driver’s seat. Officers say they spotted a gun next to him in the center console. “Both officers immediately began instructing the man to place his hands up and not to touch the gun,” police said. Police say at first the man cooperated, and put his hands on the steering wheel. Then the man allegedly dropped his right arm “in an attempt to retrieve the handgun from the center console.” As the man began to raise his arm again, one of the officers fired his gun, striking the man.” (044)

As officers approached the man, they noticed that he was in possession of a firearm, according to reports. “El Paso County sheriff’s investigators are looking at the possibility of self-defense in a fatal shooting by an off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent, a spokeswoman said Thursday. … Socorro police found Juan Daniel Jacques, 33, shot to death when officers responded to a call of an aggravated assault in progress, sheriff’s officials said. … The agent was identified Thursday as Luis Chavez. A sheriff’s spokeswoman said that the shooting did not involve the agent’s work. “Officials said the bloodshed unfolded just before 5 p.m. when a stolen Honda Accord was spotted in the 500 block of Clairmont Drive in unincorporated Lane County. “As the male driver got out of the vehicle, the Deputy approached and confronted him. The driver was not cooperative with the Deputy, he was in possession of a firearm and was shot by the Deputy. “The deputy was called to the Pinetree Village Apartments at 7520 Broadway about some type of disturbance. When the deputy arrived he encountered the suspect in the hallway, Morgen said. The suspect, whose name has not been released, became aggressive despite the deputy’s attempts to calm him down by speaking to him. A fight ensued. The deputy discharged his Taser. “At 11:22 p.m., officers were dispatched to an address on the 900 block of Brunswick Street on the report of a disturbance, police said. Officers say family members were struggling with the suspect when they arrived. The officers intervened, and after a brief struggle, they were able to restrain the suspect. During the struggle, a taser was used on the suspect, police said. Soon after being placed in handcuffs, the officers noticed the suspect was not responsive and immediately took life-saving measures, according to police.” “They’re looking into Ragudo’s mental health history and the possibility that he’d ingested some kind of drugs. Wagstaffe said Ragudo’s father called the police because his son was acting out of control, yelling, screaming and shaking. “Growling was the term used at one point,” Wagstaffe said. “We don’t know what would make him act the way he was, such that his father would call the police.” After officers arrived, Ragudo became aggressive and angry. He didn’t attack them, but was physically uncooperative when the officers needed to bring him under control to assess whether he needed psychiatric evaluation or some sort of medical attention, according to Wagstaffe.” (054)

“Officials told Channel 2’s Steve Gehlbach a suspect in an armed robbery, which occurred at the Kroger at 8465 Holcomb Bridge Road in Johns Creek, had pulled into the parking lot. Officers were told that the suspect, armed with a handgun, forced his way into a register at the Kroger. Police told Gehlbach a witness followed the suspect to the parking lot on Winters Chapel Road where Dunwoody police officers and a Johns Creek police officer located the vehicle and suspect. When confronted by officers, police said the suspect did not obey their commands and exited the vehicle. About a quarter mile from the home, a deputy saw a man walking down the road matching the description of the suspect. State authorities say the man was carrying a baseball bat. Officials say the deputy made contact with the man, identified as 39-year-old Jonathan William LeRoy. During that contact, the man reportedly began swinging the bat. The deputy then fired his weapon.” (021)

The teen is then patted down, during which he is heard saying “I can’t go to jail.” Gunfire is then heard and the video, edited and slowed down, shows a gun in Smith’s hands as shooting begins. Chief Davis told reporters that the first two gunshots came from Smith, one of them narrowly missing an officer’s face. Officers were called about midnight Sunday to Luna Lodge … A Lodge resident said he called 911 to report that a “suspicious character” (Daniel Arreola-Saavedra) wearing a hoodie was inside of a vacant first-floor unit in the complex. “He saw me, and I presumed because he saw me, he left the property,” the neighbor said, “but when I doubled back, I heard a kick and he entered through the door.” The neighbor helped direct officers to the apartment, and, later gunshots rang out, he said. “Things went south very, very fast,” he said.” (025)
“Just before 8 p.m., a man flagged down a Lauderhill police officer at 800 N. State Road 7 to report he had been robbed of his backpack at gunpoint moments earlier. The officer learned the robbery happened at a bus stop in nearby Plantation, but the robber headed into Lauderhill, according to Lauderhill Lt. Mike Santiago. Lauderhill police set up a perimeter and Plantation and Davie police officers joined the hunt. Santiago said the search came to an end about an hour later when the suspect was spotted. “Shots rang out,” he said. More than one officer from Davie and Plantation opened fire, he said. No Lauderhill officers were involved in the shooting, he said. The suspect died behind the home in the 700 block of Northwest 39th Avenue. It was not clear whose home it was. “Trayvon Mitchell, 38, of Fort Lauderdale, died Sunday around 7:40 p.m. He was suspected of pointing a gun at a man and stealing his book bag at a Plantation bus stop. … At the time of his death, Mitchell, of Fort Lauderdale, was found to be wearing an ankle monitor. Mitchell was previously affiliated with two charter school companies, Ivy Schools II, Inc. and Next Generation Charter School, Inc. In January, 2016, he was charged with two counts of grand theft, accused of stealing more than $40,000 but less than $100,000 in 2013 from the Broward County School Board. Mitchell had pleaded not guilty. A Broward Sheriff’s detective found school board money that was supposed to have been spent on students — more than $55,000 — was deposited into Mitchell’s personal bank account, according to an arrest report. Mitchell spent about $20,000 of stolen funds on school operations. A school check card was used to spend more than $2,700 on Louis Vuitton bags at a Neiman Marcus store; some of the bags were returned to the department store and a credit was made to Mitchell’s personal account, police said.” (video) (026)

“Police on Thursday identified the two officers who shot and killed an armed intruder at a South San Jose power plant earlier this week. Adam Hutson and Timothy Faye . … were called to the Metcalf Energy Center at 1 Blanchard Road about 5 p.m. Tuesday after a suspicious vehicle was spotted at the front gate. A man was seen pulling a large object out of the trunk. The officers arrived to find a black Mercedes-Benz unoccupied with a large sword in the driver’s seat, police said. They went through the gate and found a man armed with a 6-foot-long pipe and an ax. Police said the man ignored an officer’s commands to drop the weapons and walked away. The officers followed and continued to tell him to put the ax and pipe down, but he again refused and reportedly yelled “shoot me, kill me” several times, police said. The man then turned around and advanced toward the officers. One officer shot him when he was 5 to 6 feet away and the other opened fire when the man continued toward him, police said. All told, Hutson and Faye ordered the man to drop the weapons 23 times, police said. … A search of the man turned up half a dozen throwing knives, pepper spray and a second ax, police said The man had a criminal history that included resisting arrest and drug and weapons violations, police said. In September, he was admitted to a hospital for a 72-hour psychiatric evaluation.” “Officials described the man as an Asian male in his late 20s, 5′ 6″ tall and 145 pounds. “Investigators have learned this incident began at approximately 8:04 p.m. in the city of Victorville, when a cell phone retail store was robbed by 4 armed male black adult suspects. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies located the suspect vehicle in the unincorporated city of Adelanto, and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The suspects failed to yield, and a pursuit ensued with the suspects travelling recklessly on various highways at high rates of speed, and at times, on the wrong side of the road. The pursuit ultimately culminated on 48th Street East at East Avenue R-8, in the city of Palmdale, after San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies initiated a pursuit intervention technique. Shortly thereafter, a traffic collision occurred between the deputy and suspect vehicles, at which time the pursuit terminated, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. The three additional suspects fled the vehicle into the surrounding neighborhood. They were subsequently located and arrested without further incident. One male black adult suspect was struck at least once in the torso by deputy gunfire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.” (035)

Adrian Escobar put a gun to his head and threatened to kill himself when police arrived, (Yakima Police Captain Jeff) Schneider said. Escobar fired shots at officers from the house before SWAT teams from Yakima and Benton County arrived, and officers attempted to negotiate with him six times, according to police. Schneider said the Benton County SWAT team was brought in to provide relief for officers working in the cold weather during the six-hour standoff. Schneider said Escobar fired at officers again, and Ward, a Yakima SWAT team member, shot him about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. Escobar died from a single gunshot to the head.” (1166)
“Yakima police responded around 7:30 p.m. Monday evening to reports of a man (Jose Miguel Garcia) at the Cascade Apartments threatening residents with a gun, according to a Yakima Police Department news release. When officers arrived, they found a 31-year-old man barricaded in his apartment. The man was blind and had an “extensive criminal history” of assault behavior, police said. Over the next five hours, officers attempted to negotiated with the man and heard him talking as if someone else was inside the apartment, according to the release. Once they obtained a search warrant, officers eventually “breached” the door to the apartment but continued to try to negotiate with the man, officers said. “…after a few minutes the situation deteriorated and two officers fired shots at the suspect killing him,” … A firearm was found in the apartment.” (1171)
These stories were considered noteworthy. “A 26-year-old Enfield man was attempting to avoid being arrested on an outstanding warrant when he was shot by a state trooper in a field, according to his fiancee, who was a passenger in the car that police had tried to stop along Route 4 in Canaan Saturday night. In an interview on Wednesday, Saeti Tobin said she and Jesse J. Champney had set out on Saturday to go to a convenience store in Canaan and return a car they had borrowed. Before they could do so, the pair noticed they were being followed by police, so Champney turned onto Switch Road. But when he did, the car plowed into a snow-covered field, Tobin said. Champney told her to run and he himself fled toward the woods, she said. “He was never trying to advance on anyone, he was trying to get away,” said the 23-year-old Tobin, who also has had run-ins with police. “There was no high-speed chase, there were no drugs involved, there were no weapons involved, there was no stolen car and there was no serious crime committed. … The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office has confirmed that Champney was shot four times, and on Wednesday identified New Hampshire State Trooper Christopher O’Toole as the officer who fired the fatal round. Authorities also said Canaan police officer Samuel Provenza was at the scene during the incident. He did not discharge his firearm, according to a news release. Tobin was more specific about the circumstances surrounding the stop than she was about the shooting itself. The incident took place around 6:30 p.m., when it was dark, and Tobin stayed with the vehicle after Champney fled, placing her some distance from where the shooting occurred. She said she believes Champney was not armed at the time. (Champney’s brother, Josh, who also was present for the interview at a home in Danbury, N.H., said Jesse Champney sometimes carried a pocketknife.) … Tobin and Josh Champney both asserted that Provenza had it out for Jesse Champney. They said they feel he was targeted. … Jesse Champney had his run-ins with the law. In May 2016, Champney was arrested in Lebanon on a felony charge of possession of heroin with intent to sell and resisting arrest. He failed to appear for a court date in that case, which prompted the warrant to be issued for his arrest. Champney also was convicted of a few other nonviolent crimes, including theft in 2012, for which he served prison time, Tobin said. Prison changed him, and although he took some college courses while there, he left addicted to opiates, Tobin said. He had, however, recently turned his life around and had been in a Suboxone program — medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction — for the last few months, she said. “He was a tough kid because he was made to be that way,” Tobin said. “But he was the biggest sweetheart.” (1159)
“Tammy Murillo said her 32-year-old son, Jesse Murillo — whom authorities say was a battery suspect armed with a metal bar — was a Navy veteran who had been deployed overseas for a time. “We called 9-1-1 to have the police come and help calm the situation; never did we anticipate the outcome,” … Around 7:10 p.m. Saturday, Los Angeles Police Department officers from the Topanga Division responded to a radio call of a battery … Upon arrival, an officer was met by a victim at the house, who police said had an injured shoulder. While they were speaking to the victim, the suspect exited the home armed with what officers initially described as a possible machete. It was later determined to be a metal bar, Madison said. Officers broadcast a call for help and the suspect fled on foot, he said. “They located him in an alley to the rear of the home and there was an officer-involved shooting,” Madison said. The suspect was struck by gunfire and taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, authorities said. Tammy Murillo said her fiancé had called 9-1-1 after her son and daughter had gotten into a verbal argument and the fiancé intervened, which unintentionally escalated the situation. Following that call, the son injured her fiancé’s arm, she said. “What set my son off was the 9-1-1 call,” Murillo said. “He didn’t want cops involved at all. “One woman is dead and a man is in the hospital after an officer-involved shooting in Grundy County. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, 20-year old Shelby Comer was found dead in a car following the shooting. The suspect, Jackie Wayne Bean, per the Sheriff. was taken into custody and transported to the hospital around 8:00 Sunday morning. Sheriff Shrum said it’s unclear if Comer died during the shooting, or before. The shooting happened around 10:30 Saturday night in the Coalmont area, according to the TBI. A Grundy County Sheriff’s deputy attempted a traffic stop on B Mine Road, when the driver allegedly pointed a firearm at the deputy. The deputy then fired into the vehicle several times, according to the TBI, then the vehicle drove away, hitting the police cruiser. Roughly 20 minutes later, a person saw the suspected vehicle crash off the side of the road. According to the TBI, the suspect said he was shot and asked for the citizen’s vehicle. That person drove off and called police. When officers arrived, the suspect was gone, but Comer was found dead in the back of the car. … Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum says that 32-year-old Jacky Wayne Bean, of Soddy Daisy, is being held without bond following Saturday’s incident. Bean has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, evading arrest, 3 charges of reckless endangerment, DUI, and violation of implied consent. More charges are expected later this week.” (1161)
“Multiple sources confirm to News 4 part-time Grundy County Deputy Mike Holmes fired a shot that may have struck 20-year-old Shelby Comer on Saturday evening. … When reached by phone Thursday, Deputy Holmes, who is also the fire chief of Monteagle, TN, declined to comment. Sheriff Shrum said he “will not confirm or deny at this point” whether Holmes is the deputy who fired the shots into the car. There are also questions about how much law enforcement training Deputy Holmes has received in the past. “A Progreso police officer shot and killed a man Sunday who was carrying a machete, according to a Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office news release. Deputies responded to Encino Street in Progreso where the officer shot the man at about 9:24 p.m. Initially, officers were called out to the area to investigate a disturbance involving a man who was wielding a machete. “The officer made contact with the male subject and a struggle ensured,” according to the news release. “During the struggle, the officer discharged his weapon fatally shooting the male.”” (1164)
“Monday’s events began when a neighbor called police to say the man, Jacob Craig, pointed a gun at him, (Capt. Mike) Williams said. The neighbor reported that the man has caused several disturbances in the past. When the officer arrived in the neighborhood, he was confronted by the naked man, who either ran out of a home or appeared from between two homes, carrying a gun. Williams said the man was given several commands to put the gun down, but he “continued to aggress” the officer, who fired multiple shots. The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The encounter lasted “a matter of seconds,” the captain said. “Craig’s mother, Kim Flanagan, told the Tulsa World her son was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression after witnessing the death of his pregnant fiancee about 10 years ago. The woman reportedly died after their vehicle was struck by a drunken driver. She said Craig tried to revive her but couldn’t. Flanagan said her son’s issues with mental illness surfaced after the death of his father when he was 8. “That was trauma one,” she said. “With his fiancee, that just pushed him over the edge. He couldn’t recover from that.” Craig, who had an 8-year-old son, began experiencing significant paranoia and depression to the point where he rarely left his room. Before, according to his mom, he was outgoing and funny. The tragedy changed his entire personality. Medication he took for the paranoia and depression helped relieve the symptoms. Flanagan said he stopped taking it about 6 months ago because he could no longer afford insurance and the price became too high. Since then, he had struggled to overcome his emotions and made multiple attempts to kill himself, she said. He also experienced bouts of anger but nothing that was extreme, she added. “It just got worse and deteriorated,” she said. “I could tell he was getting more and more depressed.”” (1165)
“Around 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, police said a suspect, Joshua Spottedhorse, walked into the Safeway on Northwest Blvd and threatened a clerk with a gun. Police said a witness followed the suspect and then the suspect began firing a weapon. Witnesses backed off and police took over the pursuit to a neighborhood near Madison and Sharp. “During the course of developing that tactical plan, the subject did try to leave in the vehicle,” said Spokane Police Chief Craig Meidl. “Officers moved to block the vehicle in and the subject then fled on foot.” At some point, an officer opened fire and shot and killed the suspect.” (1167)
“28-year-old Jesse Scarsbrook … was involved in an armed robbery at a local hobby shop. When police arrived, they say Scarsbook stole a car and led officers on a chase. He later crashed the stolen car at the intersection of 46th and Mitthoeffer and carjacked another vehicle while two people were still inside. The police pursuit continued to Pendleton Pike and Post Road, where Scarsbrook crashed. He then got out of the car and fired at officers, who returned fire. Investigators say Scarsbrook was hit and killed in the shootout.” “Witnesses say Scarsbrook got out of a vehicle Tuesday, after crashing it, like a madman. They say he started shooting with no regard for the busy intersection of Pendleton Pike and Post Road, or nearby businesses. “I’m thankful the cops, they didn’t start returning fire until us vehicles had got out,” said Craig Walker, who witnessed the shootout. … Tuesday’s shootout with officers isn’t the first time Scarsbrook has faced trouble with police. According to online records, he was found guilty of armed robbery in 2009. His projected release date was November of 2016. “A woman was killed and a Farmers Branch police officer was wounded in a shootout during a traffic stop late Tuesday, police say. Brooke Camacho, 38, who was a passenger in the car that was stopped, pulled a gun and fired on the officer about 11:30 p.m. … stop, police said, the officer asked the woman in the passenger seat to get out of the car. Police caught up with Plowden three blocks away, where he’d crashed into two parked cars at Nedro and Opal Street. He got out of the car, and things turned bloody. “After repeated commands by the plainclothes officer to show his hands, he makes a furtive abrupt movement, and the officer fires one shot, striking the male in the head,” Patterson said. “Preliminary information from law enforcement agencies indicates the Georgia State Patrol and Columbus police were conducting a DUI checkpoint near Cusseta Road when a Kia driven by Jarvis Lykes turned around before reaching officers about 9:30 p.m. A trooper attempted to stop the driver but Lykes failed to pullover. The trooper pursued Lykes who drove into a residential neighborhood on Lumpkin Court, a dead-end street. After stopping his vehicle, Lykes exited the car and a physical altercation between Lykes and the trooper occurred as Lykes attempted to re-enter his vehicle. The story of the week was told in Texas. “A Bexar County sheriff’s deputy killed a 6-year-old boy Thursday afternoon while chasing down a wanted felon at a Schertz mobile home park. The felon, 30-year-old Amanda Lenee Jones, was trying to break into the boy’s family trailer at Pecan Grove Manufactured Home Community when she was apprehended by four deputies. They fatally shot her. One of their bullets, however, pierced through the trailer wall and hit the boy, identified as Kameron Prescott. Kameron, who was home early after his Cibolo elementary school released students at noon for Christmas break, was later pronounced dead at University Hospital. According to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, Jones had no apparent connection with Kameron or his family — she was just trying to evade police. Jones’ death concluded a nearly 2-hour chase, that began when a man called the sheriff’s office to report a stolen car around 11 a.m., and directed deputies to where he thought the Jones had taken it. The ensuing chase involved deputies swimming across Cibolo Creek and through the woods to track her down. … Salazar told reporters Thursday that he didn’t know what prompted deputies to fire at Jones, who was unarmed at the time of her death. Deputies alleged that she was carrying a gun earlier in the chase.
“The incident began at 10:48 a.m. when a man reported a woman had stolen his car. The caller said he knew who the woman was and where they could find her. Deputies were informed she was armed, Salazar said. Deputies eventually found her hiding in a closet at a house in the 11200 block of FM 1518, at which point she showed a gun and threatened to shoot a deputy, Salazar said. The woman then bolted from the home and ran away, going down a ravine and crossing a creek before disappearing into a wooded area. … During a 90-minute search of the wooded area, tracking dogs picked up and lost the woman’s scent several times. The woman eventually ran to the mobile home park, where two residents who crossed her path reported that she physically threatened them, Salazar said. The pilot of a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter circling overhead also reported the woman reached for her waistband several times, indicating she may be armed, the sheriff said. The pilot watched as the woman tried breaking into several mobile homes in the area. She then made her way to the child’s home, where deputies closed in on her.”
In an exclusive interview with News 4 San Antonio, the family shared the final words they told Amanda Lenee Jones, 30, just moments before Bexar County Deputies shot and killed her. Jessica is Jones’ girlfriend. She told News 4 San Antonio Jones’ had called her from a trailer at the Pecan Grove neighborhood. “She said, I’m naked. I’m scared and I’m running in boxers and my bra. I think they are (going to) get me. I have to go, I love you,” explained Jessica. … “She didn’t deserve to die, neither did that boy,” said Renee Jones, the suspect’s mother. … Amanda Jones does have an extensive criminal history, mostly drug charges. Bexar County Deputies are still searching for a handgun they say Jones had at some point Thursday during a prolonged pursuit. Officials say Crumbley came out of the residence but refused the troopers’ request to have a peaceful resolution. They say Crumbley demanded to see the family members he had threatened, stating there would be a shootout if his demand was not met. Police say Crumbley grabbed a shovel and went towards the residence, where the family members were. The troopers were unable to apprehend Crumbley.Officials say Crumbley attempted to strike troopers with the shovel, before throwing the shovel and making a move toward what troopers believed to be another weapon. “The man called police at about 6:25 p.m. from a home in the 23000 block of Avon and told them he had a firearm and hatchet, indicating “he was going to shoot up the neighborhood,” said Steve Cooper, director at the city’s Public Safety Department. When officers arrived at the home, they talked to the caller’s mother, escorted her to the porch and went inside, Cooper said. There, the man, 48, confronted them and “advanced toward the officers wielding the hatchet in a threatening manner,” Cooper said. “One of the officers was forced to shoot the subject.” (1143)

“SDSO deputies from the Vista substation began a pursuit of a vehicle in Vista for unknown reasons sometime before 3:10 p.m., SDSO said. The man driving a dark blue or black sedan had a female passenger inside while leading deputies east towards Oceanside at speeds of about 50 miles per hour, Oceanside Police Department (OPD) Officer Thomas Bussey said. The driver headed towards a residential area on Roselle Avenue, off College Boulevard, where the dark sedan struck another car. That is when the driver attempted to bail out of the vehicle, Bussey said. One deputy fired on the man. It was not clear if the driver was armed at the time and the situation leading up to the shooting was not made available. The driver was declared dead at the scene.” (1148)
Officials with FPD say that around 6:20 p.m. on Thursday an officer with the department was at the intersection of McCormick School Road and Broadway “when he heard a female screaming for help” from the passenger seat of a truck being driven by Frankie Larry Anchondo. When the officer tried to stop the truck, it sped off and began to drive recklessly, police say. Eventually it stopped moments after the female “either fell or jumped out of the passenger side” of the truck, and Anchondo stepped out of the truck as well. At some point the officer fired at him, killing him. It’s unclear at this time what transpired before the gun was discharged.” (1149)
“A burglary suspect was shot and killed by a Sonoma County sheriff’s detective at a Ukiah (Mendocino County) motel Thursday night after her accomplice leveled a gun at officers, officials said Friday. The dead woman, whose name was not released, was also armed, said Sgt. Spencer Crum of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. The woman was found inside the Sunrise Inn after the detective fired an unknown number of rounds at her companion, Crum said. ,,, deputies from Sonoma and Mendocino counties and Ukiah police went to the budget motel at about 8 p.m. after receiving information that the two Sonoma County burglary suspects were there. “One detective shot an undetermined amount of rounds and a male suspect was ultimately taken into custody. The second suspect was found deceased,” Crum said. … A woman who identified herself as the motel manager said multiple shots were fired into the motel room. The shots “were from outside, and they broke the glass in the bathroom, and the lady was in the bathroom,” said the manager, who would give only her first name, Mira. Mira said the dead woman’s name was Mary and that she and her companion had checked in on Monday and had stayed inside the nonsmoking room, smoking cigarettes. “The first shooting took place at about 4:10 p.m. when Ahmed Aminamin El-Mofty allegedly opened fire on a Capitol Police officer in his cruiser, striking the vehicle several times, but missing the officer. The shooting took place just steps from the Pennsylvania state Capitol Building. About a half hour later, the same man is suspected to have opened fire on a female officer who was struck once, but is in good condition at a local hospital, according to (Dauphin County District Attorney Ed) Marsico. Capital Police pursued the suspect to a residential area, who then allegedly opened fire on them with two handguns, Marsico said. The officers fired back, striking and killing the suspect. None of the officers were struck. Marsico said there was “no doubt” the man was targeting police officers.” (1156)

Chesnee SC The Chesnee police said one person was dead and another person was hurt after a car pulled out in front of a Chesnee police officer who was driving to work Friday morning…. the initial reports were that a car pulled in front of the officer on US 221 and was struck on the driver’s side of the vehicle. Troopers said the officer was injured and transported to Spartanburg Regional. The officer was wearing a seatbelt, troopers said. … The driver and passenger were not wearing seatbelts … The deceased driver was later identified as 30-year-old Devan Rachad Stevenson.” (1158)

They went to the gas station after robbing a Waffle House on Evans Mill Road about six miles to the east. According to authorities, after an extended stand-off at the gas station, there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and police, which left one of the suspects dead. Sheriff’s Office IDs woman, deputy in apparent ‘suicide by cop’ “Springfield GA— Officials are investigating an apparent ‘suicide by cop’ . … Effingham County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Paddleford Drive at Goshen Road around 7 p.m. Tuesday in response to an attempted suicide. Authorities say 50-year-old Marcia Metzger Aiken of Effingham was threatening suicide and was reportedly in possession of a firearm. According to a release from ECSO, deputies attempted to make contact with Aiken and “the situation escalated very quickly, resulting in the woman being shot.” Aiken was pronounced dead at the scene.” (1130)

Bo Matthews, with the Oklahoma City Police Department, said the incident began with an officer responding to a call about a man lying in the grass on the side of Southeast 59th Street and Mackleman Drive. Matthews said the man, later identified as 28-year-old Kyle Anthony Mihecoby, was not cooperating with the officer, Bethany Sears, so the officer used pepper spray on him, who then punched her in the face. An altercation ensued, Matthews said, and the officer used a Taser on the man. According to Matthews, the man was able to take the Taser away from the officer ;and attempted to use it on her. At that point, the officer fired her weapon, Matthews said. Mihecoby died at the scene, according to Matthews. The officer was taken to the hospital and is being treated for injuries to her face and hands.” (1124)
Man dies while in police custody in Pueblo; police asking for witnesses “Pueblo CO – A man behaving erratically on the interstate died Sunday after a struggle with Pueblo officers. On Wednesday, the coroner announced he could not immediately determine a cause of death. Further testing will likely take about 4-6 weeks according to Pueblo County Coroner Brian Cotter. The police department says officers were dispatched to I-25 near Eagle Ridge Boulevard just before 3:30 p.m. on reports of a man, Emanuel Miera, 26, walking back and forth across the interstate. He reportedly kept darting through traffic even after officers showed up and tried to talk with him. Police say they finally got the man off the interstate, but he still wouldn’t cooperate with officers. During the struggle, officers tased him once, which didn’t subdue him. Police finally got the man handcuffed and took him to Parkview Medical Center, where he later died.” (1126)
Body cam video shows moments officers fatally shot robbery suspect in Seattle park “The Seattle Police Department has released body camera video that shows the moments leading up to the fatal shooting of a robbery suspect by officers in a popular park. A woman was taken into custody. The shooting stemmed from a string of incidents that happened after a reported robbery at Forever 21 in the Northgate Mall about 10 p.m. Monday. Police said the two were shoplifting, and when a store manager confronted the couple, the man displayed a handgun, causing the manager to back away. The man and woman then fled to an apartment complex near the mall. When the apartment manager saw what he thought was a suspicious car in the parking lot, he went to investigate. Smartphone video shows the exchange between the apartment manager and the suspects. The suspects shouted profanities at the manager, who asked them to move their cars. As the suspects finally walked away, the man fired his gun into the ground toward the manager. The manager reported the incident to police as the couple drove away in an Audi. The gunman then drove off and the woman contacted police sometime after leaving the apartment complex. They found her at Holman Road and took her into custody. When officers noticed the man watching her at Holman Road, a car chase began with Seattle police. During the pursuit, the man fired multiple gunshots at officers in the 100 block of Northeast 80th Street. No officers were hurt. The pursuit continued as the driver entered Magnuson Park and came to a stop near the boat ramp. 1 Dead After Early Morning Officer-Involved Shooting “Northglenn CO Officers opened fire on two suspects in a stolen vehicle that accelerated toward them early Wednesday morning, leaving one dead and one injured, the Northglenn Police Department said. The shooting happened about 3:30 a.m. in the 10400 block of Franklin Way as officers investigated a stolen vehicle, police said. As officers tried making contact, the vehicle accelerated toward them, police said. Officers opened fire, hitting one of two suspects in the vehicle. … One suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and the second suspect was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries.” (1131)
KCSO investigating in-custody death in Boron “Bkersfield CA Kern County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating a man’s death, after he stopped breathing while in custody Wednesday. On Dec. 13 around 6:00 p.m. deputies were called out to the 24000 block of Juniper Avenue in Boron after reports of a man threatening neighbors. Deputies say the man was under the influence of drugs and he was touching himself inappropriately. When deputies tried to arrest the man, he started to resist…. With help from a bystander, they were able to arrest him. But KCSO says once the man was handcuffed, they realized he wasn’t breathing. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.” (1133)

It happened in the area of Chapman Street and Chapman court a little before 7 p.m. when police tried to stop a car. The car was suspected of having been involved in a series of armed carjackings in New Britain and surrounding towns over the past two weeks, police said. The most recent was on Monday, where police said shots were fired at one victim, and in a second incident a victim was pistol-whipped. Police said as officers tried to stop the car and apprehend the occupants, more than one officer fired their weapon. Three people were in the car, and were all hit by gunfire. … Police said there was at least one firearm in the car.” (1134)
“FBI Agent, Detective Shoot and Kill Robbery Suspect in Yonkers: Sources A bank robbery suspect was shot and killed by an FBI agent and a Yonkers detective Friday evening, three sources familiar with the investigation say. The agent and detective were conducting an investigation into the alleged bank robber near Van Cortlandt Park when they tried to pull him over at Aqueduct and McLean avenues for questioning, the sources told News 4. The two apparently saw the man with a weapon and fired at him, the sources said, adding that a gun believed to belong to the suspect was recovered at the scene. “Trooper fatally shoots driver after being dragged by vehicle Police say 30-year-old Adam Radcliffe of Wilmington was shot and killed when he attempted to flee police during a traffic stop, dragging a trooper as he fled. The incident began at 4:24 p.m. Friday. According to investigators, a trooper on patrol observed a burgundy Honda strike a pole and was driving erratically on Boxwood Road near Centerville Road in Wilmington. The driver, later identified as Radcliffe, then fled from the crash scene. The trooper followed Radcliffe’s vehicle to the Kirkwood Plaza Shopping Center on Kirkwood Highway. When the trooper approached the vehicle, Radcliffe allegedly took off with the trooper attached to the passenger side door, dragging him. The vehicle went down the access road for Kirkwood Plaza and turned left onto Farrand Drive. The trooper opened fire, striking Radcliffe. Radcliffe’s vehicle sped off down Farrand Drive. Police later located the burgundy Honda Civic off of Hammond Place at the end of Farrand Drive where it drove through a fence into a small creek. Radcliffe was removed from the vehicle and transported to the hospital where he died.” (1138)

“Off-duty officer shoots, kills man who brandished gun at Lenexa Costco An off-duty police officer shot and killed a man who brandished a gun inside a Costco Wholesale store on Sunday. Police got a call about 11 a.m. about a man who was brandishing a firearm at the store. Witnesses said that the man was yelling and pointing a gun. When officers arrived, they found that the man had been shot by someone inside the store and he was pronounced dead. They then learned that an off-duty police officer, who was shopping there, engaged the man inside the store and fatally shot him. …. “You could hear from the front of the store,” one woman said. “A bunch of people were yelling, ‘Everybody get down! Everybody get to the back of the store!'” “We just kind of ran through the neighborhoods to see how far away we could get from the building,” she said. “I just really hope and pray that things get better across the country.” ~ Miguel Robles, a Costco employee, said, “I saw a gentleman standing at the door yelling at everybody. It looked like a .45 revolver in his hand. I just turned around and I started clearing people away from the door and pushing people away. I saw kids and told everybody to grab their kids and keep going, keep going, keep going.” ~ Costco employee Ryan Vacca said, “It was this weird moment for me where I could hear and sense a lot of commotion going on, but it wasn’t really registering with me. I was just kind of watching it ensue.” Vacca said the man was “yelling something about the fire marshal and the doors. It sounded like gibberish.” ~ Bill Payne was shopping with his friend when the incident happened. He said, “I was looking at the TVs and somebody hollered, ‘Man coming in with a gun!’ We ran towards the back and out the side door,” he said, “and when I got to the back, I counted 8 shots. It’s scary.” … Employees have returned to the store, which is expected to reopen on Monday. Armed man in Costco left behind little family, was living in his long-haul truck The screaming man with a gun who terrorized fleeing customers in a Lenexa Costco on Sunday morning was a tractor-trailer driver who, like many long-haul truckers, apparently lived in the cab of his truck. Ronald O. Hunt, 58, left his truck for the last time in the Costco parking lot when — for reasons still unknown to investigators — he walked menacingly into the store where he eventually was gunned down inside by an off-duty lawman.” (1084)
Man Holding Baby Daughter Hostage During Standoff in Covina Is Fatally Shot by Police; Family Questions Use of Force “The nearly 7-hour-long ordeal began about 3 p.m. Sunday when the man, identified by family members as 22-year-old Daniel Navarro, was sitting in a car with his girlfriend and 7-month-old daughter in the 700 block of North Glendora Avenue. The couple apparently got into some sort of argument, prompting a response from the Covina Police Department. At some point, the woman got out of the car but Navarro refused to exit. Authorities said the man in the vehicle made threatening statements and was armed with a knife. … “He picks the baby up and … sometimes he’ll put the baby in front of him to kind of like block the police,” said Jean Claisse. “[The police] were saying ‘We want to help you ‘We want to help you’. And he was saying some bad words back to them.” … Officers said they feared for the girl’s safety because of the man’s statements and devised a plan to rescue her, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release Monday. A loud explosion occurred at the front of the vehicle and officers immediately rushed in and pulled Navarro out. Several shots were fired as Navarro was being dragged out of the vehicle. video (1087)

The pursuit ended in the Fort Hunt area of Fairfax County. Ghaisar was then shot by U.S. Park Police after a short chase. Bicyclist killed by deputy cruiser responding to call “POMPANO BEACH, FL. Authorities say a bicyclist has died following a collision with a Florida deputy’s patrol car. Broward Sheriff’s Office officials say the crash happened Tuesday afternoon in Pompano Beach. The bicyclist, who wasn’t immediately named, died at the scene. Authorities say the deputy was responding to a call but wasn’t using lights or sirens when the victim was struck.” (1095)
Statement by … U.S. Border Patrol “A U.S. Border Patrol agent discharged his service issued firearm, striking an assaultive male subject at approximately 11:30 a.m. (MST) on Wednesday, Nov. 29, in a remote area of the Baboquivari Mountain Range west of Three Points, Arizona. The assaultive subject later died as a result of his wounds. Two agents were following a group of suspected illegal aliens through a rugged and remote mountainous area in response to a sensor activation. Both agents encountered the group of men 21 miles north of the U.S./Mexico border. One of the subjects attacked an agent attempting to arrest him and gained control of the agent’s weapon. The other agent shot the subject in response. One agent suffered non-life threating injuries during the assault and was later transported to a Tucson hospital for treatment. Agents arrested three other members of the group – all adult male Guatemalan nationals – for immigration violations.” (1096)
Man dies after shot by Chicago police in Washington Park neighborhood “A South Side man died after he was shot by police while armed with a semi-automatic pistol in the Washington Park neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. Officers responded to a call of shots fired around 2:15 p.m. in the 6100 block of South King Drive and encountered Aquoness Cathery, 24, holding a handgun, according to Chicago Deputy Police Chief Kevin Ryan. “At one point the officers fired and shot the offender, who was then taken into custody,” … Police said they recovered a gun but do not believe Cathery fired it at officers. … Witnesses said the shooting occurred after a police pursuit ended with an Audi crashing at 63rd Street and Vernon Avenue. Undercover Police Fatally Shoot Robbery Suspect in North Hollywood: LAPD “A suspected male robber was dead after being shot by undercover police in North Hollywood late Thursday afternoon, authorities said. Undercover Los Angeles Police Department officers were investigating a series of robberies in the area when they spotted the suspect at around 4:25 p.m. on the 12000 block of Vose Street, according to Lt. Chris Ramirez. Ramirez said the man jumped into a vehicle and attempted to flee. The suspect got out of the car after a short chase, at which point officers started shooting, Ramirez said. Asked whether the suspect knew the people who had their guns drawn at him were police, Ramirez said, “Usually our detectives always identify themselves as police officers.” Witnesses reported hearing around 10 gunshots with officers asking the suspect to show his hands. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died of gunshot wounds, according to police. It’s unclear what prompted officers to start shooting and whether the suspect was carrying a weapon. Hendersonville police identify suspect, officer in fatal Walmart shooting ” Police have identified the suspect as Rufus Cedric Baker, a 32-year-old man from Buncombe County. … He said that when the officer tried to arrest Baker, whom Blake said was attempting to sell drugs, Baker tried to escape. The officer involved in the shooting said Baker was inside Baker’s car, and appeared to be reaching for a weapon in his waistband. The chief says officers at the scene recovered 14 bags of crystal meth and the suspect’s gun. Baker is a convicted felon with habitual felon status, whose criminal record includes theft, fraud, eluding arrest, robbery, breaking and entering, and receiving and possessing of stolen goods. He was released this year after serving five years in prison for various offenses. …The official statement from Chief Blake is below: Around 11 p.m. last night, Hendersonville Police Department responded to the scene of an undercover drug investigation at the Walmart Super Center, shot a suspect who was being placed under arrest and attempted to escape. Man Killed by Prichard Officer Was Unarmed “The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office confirms an investigation is underway into a fatal officer involved shooting in Prichard. Mobile Police says the it happened Saturday night at 9:30 during a traffic stop. It happened on First Avenue at Hanes Street. The Sheriff’s Office says Lawrence Hawkins was shot by a Prichard Police Officer. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The sheriff’s office says there is no other further information at this time and more details will be released as the investigation continues. News 5 spoke witnesses about what happened. Latreisha Williams tells News 5 she witnessed the officer follow Lawrence to his house, “He (Hawkins) got out his truck, reached in there to get his cell phone. The police were saying something, and all i heard was pow… pow… pow.” Williams says the officer never turned on his police lights until after he shot Lawrence. Several other witnesses from on the scene tell News 5 the same thing.” (1070)

Investigation Underway After Fort Worth Police Vehicle Hits, Kills Pedestrian “Police confirmed Friday evening that one of their units traveling southbound on Hemphill Street hit and killed a man walking across the street. Neighbors near the crash scene say their area is a bigger safety concern. The pedestrian’s body ended up on Fernado Florez’s yard. The victim, ” Leopoldo Castaneda-Solis, “… died at the scene. A cross has been planted on Florez’s yard. He says he is sad about what happened but is not shocked. Florez claims the street lights will be on and then suddenly turn off in the middle of the night. “If I had to go to the store, even just a couple of blocks, I’d call a cab. Death of inmate at county jail under investigation “The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an inmate’s death at the county jail early Friday. Fort Walton Beach police had arrested Nathaniel Harrison Edwards, 31, … shortly after midnight on an outstanding warrant of felony battery-domestic violence, … During a search at the jail, Edwards was caught trying to conceal a plastic bag containing methamphetamine. The Sheriff’s Office then charged him with possession of a controlled substance and smuggling contraband into a detention facility. Edwards became combative about 3:50 a.m. and had to be physically controlled by corrections staff, according to jail officials. Edwards became unresponsive and was taken to North Okaloosa Medical Center in Crestview, where he was pronounced dead.” (1065)
Two dead in stolen pickup after deputies open fire “… Sheriff Manuel Gonzales said the incident started around 3:50 a.m. when the BCSO helicopter spotted a white pickup truck that had been reported stolen. Albuquerque police officers had encountered the truck earlier in the night, but a spokesman did not have any information about it. North Valley-area command deputies responded to the report and tried to stop the truck. “They actually got out ahead of this and deployed a spike belt that was successful in spiking the vehicle,” Gonzales said. But, he said, the truck didn’t stop and instead continued to flee from authorities, driving erratically near Coors and Interstate 40. Deputies performed a “pursuit intervention technique” – in which a cruiser hits a fleeing vehicle to get it to stop – in a nearby neighborhood, and the truck came to a standstill about a quarter mile away on Coors and Glenrio NW. “Subsequently the deputies felt threatened,” Gonzales said. “We don’t know how many shots were fired.” Two people were found dead in the truck, and two people exited safely and were taken into custody, he said. He did not identify the people who were killed and did not know how old they were. He also did not identify the people who were taken into custody. Officer Involved Shooting in Klamath Falls “Police say earlier in the day at 4:30 p.m. officers and detectives from the Klamath Falls Police Department investigated an attempted murder incident at a home in Klamath Falls. They say during the investigation, officers developed probable cause to arrest the suspect for Attempted Muder, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Burglary in the first degree, Menacing, Assault in the fourth degree, and Reckless Endangering. Police say the suspect fled the residence prior to the arrival of law enforcement. Police say at 9:35 p.m. they contacted the suspect in the 2100 block of Darrow Drive and the shooting happened. The names of the officer and suspect are not being released at this time.” “Matthew David Borner, 52, was wanted on an outstanding felony warrant and suspected of stealing a vehicle when he was contacted by Klamath Falls police officers just after 8:30 a.m., a press release from the district attorney’s office said. A confrontation ensued and Borner was shot by one or more officers. District Attorney Rob Patridge could not say whether Borner had a weapon, or if one was fired, citing the fact that the investigation is ongoing.” (1079)

The death of 1042 Larry Ruiz-Barreto is considered suspicious. New Bedford man shot, killed by police in Fall River “A New Bedford man died overnight after he was shot by a police officer in Fall River, the office of Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III said, and several of his relatives and friends were later arrested during an altercation with police at Charlton Memorial Hospital. Megan Borges, a spokesperson for the DA’s office, said Monday that Larry Ruiz-Barreto, 19 was pronounced dead at the hospital following the shooting. According to Borges, police responded just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday to a report of possible gunshots near the intersection of Riggenbach and Airport Roads. Upon arrival, Borges said a number of vehicles were seen leaving the area and police attempted to pull one of them over. It was during that encounter that an officer opened fire into the car and shot the driver, Ruiz-Barreto. Fall River police said the 911 caller had reported a car was smoking, and they heard two bangs that could have been gunshots. Police did not comment on why the officer decided to use deadly force.” (1042)
3 pedestrians were killed, in 2 incidents, in Southern California on Thursday. 2 Children Dead After On-Duty Deputy Vehicle Strikes 5 Pedestrians in Boyle Heights Area: LAPD “Two children were killed, (Marco Antonio Hernandez, Jose Luis Hernandez ) and three others were injured when several pedestrians were struck during a multivehicle crash involving an on-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy vehicle Thursday night in the Boyle Heights area, authorities said. The crash occurred shortly after 7:20 p.m. in the area of Indiana Street and Whittier Boulevard, according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Tony Im. The location is on the border of East L.A. and Boyle Heights. The deputies were responding to an emergency call of a gunshot victim and traveling southbound on Indiana when a three-vehicle collision took place near Whittier, LAPD Captain Alfonso Lopez said at a late-night news conference at the scene. The sheriff’s vehicle struck five pedestrians on the southeast corner of the street. One of victims died at the scene. An investigation is underway after a Riverside County sheriff’s vehicle fatally struck a pedestrian on Nov. 16, 2017. About 8:40 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a collision involving a Riverside sheriff’s unit in the area of Perris Boulevard and Nuevo Road, according to Deputy Mike Vasquez. The patient was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, the Riverside County Fire Department said. Vasquez later confirmed the individual died. His or her name has not yet been released.” Teenage Girl Fatally Struck by Sheriff’s Vehicle After Running Across Lanes “A teenage girl was struck and killed by a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department vehicle Thursday in Perris after she ran across lanes on Perris Boulevard.”(1055)
1045 Kevin Janson Neal was a mass killer. 4 Dead, Gunman Killed In Northern California Shooting Rampage “Authorities Tuesday evening identified the gunman who killed four people and wounded at least ten others, including children, during a shooting rampage in a small Northern California community before being fatally shot by law enforcement. The Tehama County District Attorney announced that the gunman was 43-year-old Kevin Janson Neal … Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston … said around 7:50 a.m., the gunman shot one person near the corner of Bobcat Lane and Fawn Lane. The gunman took off in a vehicle and opened fire at several other locations in the community, including at the Rancho Tehama elementary school, before crashing the vehicle. No children were killed at the school, but several of them were shot and wounded. A six-year-old remained hospitalized Tuesday night. The assistant sheriff said the gunman then stole a second vehicle before he was killed in a confrontation with two officers.” (1045)

Man fatally shot by BR police officer was under investigation for child abuse, state police say “State Police said the trouble started at the Palms Apartments on McClelland Drive just after 6 p.m. when officers with the Baton Rouge Police Department were asked to escort a Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) caseworker to the complex. State police said the police officer escorted the caseworker due to the nature of the allegations against Calvin Toney and his personal history. “During the course of that investigation, a struggle ensued with officers and the suspect,” said Sr. Tpr. Bryan Lee with LSP Troop A. “The suspect was shot and killed during that struggle.” It is standard procedure to have Louisiana State Police investigate a shooting involving a police officer. Troopers would not say whether Toney had a gun, but authorities did confirm that the struggle lasted several minutes and that Toney was “tased” multiple times before being shot. They also worked to dispel a rumor that quickly spread on social media following the shooting. “Our preliminary investigation shows the suspect was NOT handcuffed at the time he was shot,” Lee explained.” … The caseworker was looking into several claims of child abuse against Toney. WGNO News reported that as Toney attempted to flee the apartment when he was confronted by the officer and caseworker, he started to fight. Officials say that the officer deployed his stun gun “several times” and eventually shot him. After being shot, Toney reportedly fled the scene and was caught by the officer outside of the complex. The officer said Toney was still resisting and was then put into handcuffs until emergency medical personnel could arrive.”(1044)
Suicidal man shot and killed by police officer Wednesday in south Oklahoma City “About 2:40 a.m. Wednesday, 29-year-old Dustin Robert Pigeon called 911 and told a dispatcher he was going to kill himself. … Early Wednesday morning, officers found Pigeon holding a bottle of lighter fluid in his left hand and a lighter in his right hand, Oklahoma City police report. As officers approached, he began pouring the lighter fluid on himself and tried to light the lighter as officers ordered him to the ground. Pigeon reportedly ignored the commands and officer Troy Nitzky, a two-year veteran, fired a single round from his bean bag shotgun. Shortly after, Sgt. Keith Sweeney, a nine-year veteran, fired several rounds from his firearm, striking and killing Pigeon. … Capt. Bo Mathews, a spokesman for the Oklahoma City Police Department, said Pigeon was considered a danger to the officers and others as he was attempting to light the lighter fluid. “In this instance (it) would be unknown if he was going to run at somebody and douse them with the fluid and light it,” … Geoffrey P. Alpert, a professor of criminology at the University of South Carolina and an author on police use of force, spoke previously with The Oklahoman about the police department’s use of lethal cover in using non-lethal weapons as a sound policy, but questioned the use of force in Wednesday’s shooting. “Isn’t the whole point of trying to save his life as opposed to taking his life?” Alpert said. He questioned the need of the firearm with a bean bag shotgun available, saying if the first round was ineffective then “you get them with another bean bag, you don’t shoot them. That’s not smart.” “I think the bean bag is certainly reasonable. You’ve got to see what happens,” Alpert said. “Taking a life in those situations is going to take a lot of understanding and explaining. I don’t see the justification yet.
