Lucky Accident

Posted in Uncategorized by chamblee54 on March 25, 2013

March 25 is Waffle Day. This is a good day to tell about a lucky accident.
The first Waffle House opened on East College Avenue, in Avondale Estates GA, in 1955. One of the partners in the venture was Albert House. The original plan was for the restaurant to be called “House Waffles.”
The person who made the first bright yellow sign was a bit hard of hearing. When the sign arrived at the site, it said Waffle House, instead of House Waffles. The restaurant was opening the next day, and it was too late to change. It opened as Waffle House, and was so successful they kept the name.

This story is a whimsical account of what might have been, and is not based on actual history. The pictures, from “The Special Collections and Archives,Georgia State University Library”, are real.

Any day is a good day for waffles, my friend!
Cool to learn the history of the Waffle House.
I have a little cat named Lafayette, but most of the time I call him Waffles.

Ahhh Yes …. scattered, smothered, and covered please. :) I could so easily become addicted to Waffle House hash browns. The waffles… ok … but the those hash browns! Oh My! Wonderful post. The photos are amazing!

Neat! I live about 5 miles away from the first Waffle House, which is now a museum. I have never gone in, but I should, I drive past it a few times every week going into Decatur. I love seeing old pictures of places I have been.

So, today is ‘Waffle Day’… this cracks me up! Very innovative. I like stories that bring back a memory or two… In the early 90’s I lived in Buchanan, Michigan for a year. There was a factory there, that made a special waffle mix and the irons to make them. I think the name was Carbon or something like that. They are in waffle houses around the country… maybe even The Waffle House. Which photo are you in???

Serendipity was indeed at play with the naming of Waffle House, since it translates to any city. My fave waffles come from a little nook in Madison, WI… pecan waffles, heavy on pecans, drizzled in a combination of two syrups – pineapple and maple. O joy, o rapture, and their coffee is strong, too!

About the song: Lene reminds me of Kate Bush in the 70s. She, of course, has a higher, more operatically influenced voice, but those eyes and quirky facial expressions are great! Altogether a nice post! Thanks, Amy, this week a fellow Trifectan on the 33-333.

Of all the days it could possibly be, Waffle Day has to be one of the best of all outcomes. Great, whimisical way to start. Love your work.
