Daniel Lucas And Kristin Moss

Daniel Anthony Lucas is scheduled to be fatally poisoned by the State of Georgia on April 27, 2016. Mr. Lucas was convicted of the murder of Bryan Moss, Kristin Moss, and Steven Moss. The murders took place April 23, 1998, on Griswoldville Road in Jones County, near Macon. The co-defendant in the case, Brandon Rhode, was executed September 27, 2010.
Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens issed a press advisory about the case. Here is their version of the crime. “(Daniel Anthony) Lucas and Brandon Joseph Rhode burglarized the home of Steven and Gerri Ann Moss twice on April 23, 1998. During the second burglary of the Moss home, 11-year-old Bryan Moss returned home from school. Lucas and Rhode confronted Bryan and forced him to sit in a chair, and then Lucas fired at Bryan with a .25 caliber handgun, inflicting a non-fatal wound to his upper arm and shoulder. Lucas led Bryan to a bedroom where he shot the boy repeatedly with the .25 caliber handgun. In the meantime, Rhode met 15-year-old Kristin Moss as she arrived from school, placed her in a chair, and shot her twice with a .357 caliber handgun. Rhode then shot Steven Moss four times with the .357 caliber handgun as Steven arrived home. Finally, Lucas obtained a .22 caliber handgun from Rhode’s automobile and shot Bryan and Kristin Moss both again. Both Bryan and Kristin as well as their father Steven Moss died as a result of any number of these gunshot wounds inflicted by Lucas.
Several witnesses observed Rhode’s automobile as Lucas and Rhode fled in it from the Mosses’ home. One of these witnesses identified Lucas as the passenger in the automobile. A search of the automobile revealed a recently-used spare tire and damage to both the front and rear bumpers. The damage to the bumpers was shown to be consistent with damage to a propane tank and a cinder block at the Mosses’ home. Expert testimony demonstrated that paint left on the cinder block matched the paint on Rhode’s automobile. Further expert testimony showed that an impression left in the Mosses’ dirt driveway could have been made by the spare tire. “
The next part of the story is from Appeal from the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia “On April 25, 1998, two days after the murders, police questioned Rhode, who told them he was with Lucas on the day of the crime. That night, officers questioned Lucas at the Jones County Sheriff’s Department. Lucas signed a waiver of his Miranda rights and first denied any involvement in the slayings. During a break after about an hour, the officers learned Rhode had implicated his confederate, Lucas, in the murders. When confronted with this fact, Lucas continued to deny shooting anyone or even possessing a gun that night. After still another break, the officers showed Lucas three firearms used in the crime that had been recovered with Rhode’s help. One officer told Lucas that Rhode was “going to be the main witness against” him and “end up putting [him] in the electric chair” if Lucas didn’t tell his side of the story. Lucas said he did not know what to do and asked to see his girlfriend. The two interrogating officers left the room and allowed him to speak with her for about five minutes. When the officers returned around midnight, Lucas told them he wanted to sleep. He was escorted to a cell for the night.
The next morning, April 26, an officer retrieved Lucas and offered him food, drink, and a cigarette. Lucas again was read his Miranda rights and said he was willing to answer questions. One of the officers told Lucas that Rhode had given a videotaped confession, which Lucas asked to see. After watching the tape, Lucas said it was “bull shit” and agreed to tell his side of the story. An officer still again read Lucas his Miranda rights. Lucas said he understood his rights and had not been offered anything or threatened to elicit his statement. Lucas then gave a videotaped confession to the Jones County police around noon. Lucas began by explaining that he took six Xanax pills before burglarizing the Moss home. He explained that, shortly after he and Rhode broke into the home the second time, eleven-year-old Bryan Moss arrived. Lucas walked into the living room, found the little boy sitting in a chair, and shot the boy, though he did not kill him. Lucas took the boy into a bedroom. Rhode then yelled to Lucas that a girl was coming in the house. Rhode then shot her. Lucas also recounted Rhode telling him that her father was coming into the home next. After the father hollered, Lucas said, “we shot him. I don’t know — I didn’t hardly remember hearing the gunshots or nothing.” According to Lucas, “I went in the living room and the man was on the — on the floor and the girl was sitting in the chair and I went back into the bedroom and the little boy was sitting there and I shot him.” Lucas said he returned to the bedroom, shot Bryan again, and then walked out to Rhode’s car to get a .22 caliber handgun. Lucas told police he came back inside and shot the girl, Kristin, who was sitting in a chair after already having been wounded by Rhode. Lucas said he also might have shot the boy, Bryan, with the .22 caliber handgun. Lucas admitted that he knew what he did was wrong and said he was sorry. He offered no reason or explanation for what happened.
Mr. Lucas had a tough life before the murders. “(Kelly Bowden, Lucas’s aunt) Bowden also said that Lucas’s mother began using drugs and alcohol at an early age. By eighteen, Debra was pregnant with Lucas. After Lucas’s birth, his father and Debra drank alcohol excessively, smoked marijuana, used crack cocaine, and took methamphetamines for much of his childhood, often when Lucas was in the house. According to Bowden, substance abuse made it impossible for David and Debra to care for Lucas and his younger sister Lacey. Bowden said that, in addition to abusing drugs in the children’s presence, Lucas’s parents often fought in front of him and his sister…..
Lucas claimed that counsel was ineffective for failing to put forward still more facts about his childhood. Specifically, Lucas submitted an affidavit from Louis Pelt, who grew up with Lucas. Pelt stated that he saw Lucas’s father beat Lucas with a belt and that Lucas’s stepmother Ginger often yelled at Lucas, called him obscene names, and belittled him. Pelt said that “Ginger had strange sexual habits” and on multiple occasions had touched Pelt’s genitalia when he was about fourteen. Lucas also submitted an affidavit from Curtis Stephens, a high-school friend of Lucas’s, who stated he avoided Lucas’s house because of Ginger, “a ‘pill-popper’ who would often say sexual things to [Lucas].” Stephens reported that Ginger would watch Lucas shower and comment on his genitals. Lucas also points to material in defense counsel’s files referencing verbal abuse from Ginger, physical violence Lucas’s father inflicted on Lucas’s mother and her boyfriend, and abuse Lucas’s mother endured at the hands of boyfriends. “
Mr. Lucas was high as a Georgia pine during the killings, and may have been blacked out. Page 26 of the USDC document tells this story: “… Lucas’s monumental substance abuse, which “spiraled out of control” and included: “one gram of crank per day while drinking and popping pills at the same time”; hallucinogenic mushrooms, which he picked trashbags full of and “was constantly eating”; a “tremendous amount of acid,” at times “four to seven hits of acid at a time, when everyone else around him was taking one to two hits” — sometimes he took as many as fourteen acid hits; on a number of occasions, using about an “eight ball” of crack cocaine over a two or three day period; and eventually, Lucas devolving to smoking embalming fluid.”
Before his execution, Brandon Rhode tried to commit suicide. “Rhode tried to kill himself by slitting the side of his neck and both arms. By the time he was discovered, Rhode was unconscious and had lost half the blood in his body; he was revived at the hospital in nearby Griffin…Rhode had concealed the razor blade he used to cut his neck and arms while lying under a blanket, said Joe Drolet, a lawyer for the state attorney general’s office. He was being observed by guards, but they could not see what was happening under the blanket and took action when they saw blood.” (The link for this quote, from the AJC, no longer works.)
Mr. Lucas has put in his request for a last meal. He wants “meat pizza, steak and cheese calzone, a stuffed portobello mushroom, chef salad with ranch and honey mustard dressings and orange juice.” Pictures today are from “The Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library”. UPDATE: Daniel Lucas died at 9:54 pm, April 27, 2016.
Driving While Human
What follows is a repost from a few years ago. The thoughts are current. Pictures are from “The Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library”.
This is written as the Sunday morning worship hour winds down. In church facilities across America, preachers scream about sin. Very few will consider the sin of dangerous driving. And yet, this is the sin that can change, or end, your life in an instant.
There is a lot of label mongering in public spaces. Liberal, conservative, and racist are three of the most popular. None of these labels deals with driving courtesy. The SJW and the KKK are united in their lack of concern about safe driving. With that in mind, here is the top nine.
1- Find another way to show how bad you are. This is mostly a masculinity thing, but it just might apply to a few ladies. Driving hard and fast is the easy way to prove your toughness. All you do is push the gas pedal. You don’t have to go to the gym, have lots of sex, or go into battle. Just drive fast, and with no concern for your neighbor.
2- Slow down. There is no need to go so fast. When you go somewhere, allow yourself enough time to get there. The faster you drive, the less reaction time you have in an emergency.
3- Stay far enough behind the car ahead of you to stop in an emergency. This will be less stressful for the person in front of you.
4- Pay attention to the road. This is where cell phones, and texting, becomes a problem. You should be focused on the road ahead of you, and not what your phone mate is telling you. Your minutes will be just as good when you get to your destination. Are people really brainless enough to text and drive?
5- The three rules of the workplace apply here…. show up, stay awake, and don’t kill anyone.
6- Keep your car in good condition. The tires and brakes are key items, but also keep the engine running smoothly. Sometimes you need to accelerate.
7- Keep your temper. Driving while angry is a cause of many accidents, especially when combined with alcohol or religion.
8- Use your turn signals.
9- Show concern for the well being of your neighbor. Use common sense.
Another Mistaken Meme

“Israel uses sophisticated attack jets and naval vessels to bomb densely-crowded refugee camps, schools, apartment blocks, mosques, and slums to attack a population that has no air force, no air defense, no navy, no heavy weapons, no artillery units, no mechanized armor, no command in control, no army… and calls it a war. It is not a war, it is murder.”
PG had a tough time reading the meme. The letters were small and fuzzy. It had a picture of Noah Chomsky, and big red letters,”IT IS NOT WAR. IT IS MURDER.” Maybe Mr. Google can help.
A search for the red letter headline turned up Did he say it? Misquoting Noam Chomsky on Gaza. The text in the meme is not by Mr. Chomsky. This text is from an essay from Chris Hedges. A link to this essay is in the Ceasefire Magazine post.
Many say that it is not important if the credited celebrity really said those wonderful words. If what was said is true, what does it matter who said it? This does not sit well with PG, who feels that accuracy is important. The author, “Ceasefire Bites”, gives three reasons for accuracy.
“First, there is a worrying tendency in well-intentioned activism to forget about authenticity when you essentially agree with the sentiment expressed. But authenticity does matter, it always matters, and what might seem like a quibble over phrasing could have a major impact in the long run. … Misquotation and inaccuracy are weapons of the propagandist, not the peace activist.
Second, reams of historical apocrypha have been created by the passing on of quotations which seem accurate. Though this may sometimes be amusing – and create work for future historians – it also muddies the historical waters, causing confusion – especially when a statement is repeated so much it becomes impossible to tell whether the person really said it. (Recall, to take just one example Ahmedinejad’s quotation of Khomeini, which was – probably deliberately – mistranslated into a line about “wiping Israel off the map” and is now a staple of doctrine, despite being utterly inaccurate.)
Third, the mistake seems especially crude in this case because – of all people – the person misquoted is a) something of a stickler for accuracy in quotation, b) someone who has written extensively, diligently and at enormous length on this very topic for decades. How much effort does it take, with a back catalogue like Chomsky’s, to find something to quote accurately?”
The meme was liked by nine people, with two retweets. The ATT Problem
PG let the phone ring. The machine had the message. “This is Jaime I am calling on behalf of A T and T. This call may be monitored for quality assurance purposes” Some fast, unintelligible talk followed. “Please call 800-288-2020.” PG had to replay the message four times to get the number.
1-800-288-2020 is the main number for ATT. You have to go through an automated voice. This voice does not like the way PG talks. The voice kept saying to please answer yes or no. PG did not know what the question was. Calling about a spam phone call from Jaime was not an option. PG started to get angry, and asked started to say AGENT AGENT I WANT TO TALK TO A PERSON.
After a minute or so on hold, a lady came on the line. She asked what number PG was calling from. The lady looked in the system. It seems that Jaime wanted to tell PG about some wonderful new service from ATT that is now available in your area.
The anger that ATT causes PG to feel exploded. There was a lot of yelling. After it was over, PG felt his head hurt. There was guilt about unloading on that lady. But the harassment from ATT has got to stop. How to get a faceless corporation to understand?
Thousands of junk mail offers from ATT have polluted the mailbox. A gigabyte of emails have brought the same message. Men in orange shirts have knocked on the front door, spreading the gospel of expensive new technology.
The email is marked read, and deleted. The junk mail is thrown away unopened. PG does not want the bundled service. The TV has not been turned on since the super bowl. The land line is working the way it should. The internet service is adequate, even if more speed would be welcome.
ATT, and the predecessor Southern Bell and Bell South, have been a part of life forever. PG pays the bill every month without fail. When there have been problems, they get resolved … sometimes this is smoother than other times, but eventually the problem is resolved. The only problem that is not solvable is harassment from the tone deaf sales department. Pictures today are from “The Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library”.
Make The Trains Run On Time

@ilduce2016 is a satiric twitter account. The picture shows Benito Mussolini with a Donald Trump wig. At 7:10 AM – 28 Feb 2016, this was posted: “It is better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep.” – @realDonaldTrump #MakeAmericaGreatAgain. At 7:13 AM – 28 Feb 2016 the comment was retweeted by @realDonaldTrump.
At 7:37 AM – 28 Feb 2016 noted twitterhead Glenn Greenwald was all over it. @ggreenwald Donald Trump just re-tweeted a parody account depicting him as Mussolini, with one of Il Duce’s best-known quotes. In the best internet tradition, no one seems to know exactly when Mr. Mussolini said this, and what this had to do with making the trains run on time. “Various websites attribute the quote to Mussolini, saying it appears in the article ‘Duce (1922-42)’ in TIME magazine (2 August 1943).However, it also resembles previous proverbs and remarks made by others including 18th century Sultan of Mysore Tipu Sultan who said ‘To live like a lion for a day is far better than to live for a hundred years like a jackal.’ “
PG has seen the quote before. A babytrump named Isaiah Hankel made a motivational video, with the salient quote at the start. It was liked by a facebook friend, which got PG’s attention. Here is what PG said about it.
There is a video out now, where the speaker says “It is better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep.” This man must not like to wear wool.
A lion is a predator. It lurks in the jungle, and kills to eat. It does not produce anything except it’s own survival. A sheep lives in a community. Every once in a while, it gets the coat clipped, and grows another one. The fur goes to make woolen clothing, which keeps people warm in winter.
Maybe if you want to be an egophile, living on the destruction of your neighbor, then you might be better off as a lion. If you want to contribute something of value to others, it is better to be a sheep.
An egophile, living on the destruction of your neighbor. Which Presidential candidate does that sound like? Or better yet, which POTUS wannabe does that NOT sound like. Sorry Bernie, not everyone is fooled by your happy talk.
The chamblee54 post noted above was tough to find. For some reason, the google apparatus does not recognize it. PG found the link on a list of posts. If you google “The Value Of Sheep” on chamblee54, you are directed to Philosophy Of 2Girls1Cup.

Peachtree Street 2016
PG finished a book, Peachtree Street-Atlanta. The author is William Bailey Williford, and it was published by the University of Georgia Press in 1962. PG found this at the Chamblee library, and this is probably the best way to find this book today. (Reissued by UGA Press.)
How this road got the name Peachtree is a good question. Most peaches grow south of the fall line. The story goes that there was a Creek Indian village called Standing Peachtree, located where Peachtree Creek runs into the Chattahoochee. During the war of 1812 Fort Peachtree stood there.
There was a trail that ran from Buckhead to an intersection with the Sandtown Trail, at what is now Five Points. A short distance south of this intersection was a settlement known as White Hall. For many years, Peachtree Street south of Five Points was known as Whitehall Road. At some point in the last thirty years, a decision was made to change Whitehall to Peachtree. It did not help the rundown condition of Whitehall Street.
In 1835 Governor Wilson Lumpkin decided that a railroad that would be centered near the junction of Peachtree Trail and Sandtown Trail. The new town was named “Marthasville”, after the daughter of the Governor. Martha Lumpkin resides in Oakland Cemetery today.
The village was soon renamed Atlanta, which was a feminine form of Atlantic. Houses, churches, and businesses were soon built on Peachtree Road. In 1856, Richard Peters built a flour mill. To insure a steady supply of firewood, he bought four hundred acres of land, for five dollars an acre. The land was between Eighth Street, North Avenue, Argonne Avenue, and Atlantic Drive.
Another pioneer citizen with a large landholding was George Washington (Wash) Collier. Mr. Collier bought 202 acres for $150 in 1847. The land was between West Peachtree, Fourteenth Street, Piedmont Road, Montgomery Ferry Road, and the Rhodes Center. Much of the land was used for the development of Ansley Park.
In 1854, Atlanta entertained, for the first time, a man who had been President. On May 2, Millard Fillmore arrived from Augusta on a private rail car.
There was some unpleasantness in 1864, which we will not concern ourselves with.
In 1866, there was a shocking murder. John Plaster was found dead, in an area known as “tight squeeze”. This was an area of shanties, at the present location of Crescent Avenue and Tenth Street. A hundred years later, this was near “the strip”, Atlanta’s hippie district, also called “Tight Squeeze”.
As the nineteenth century rolled along, many mansions were built on Peachtree Street. The road was paved, and streetcars ran up and down. Automobiles came, and came, and came. An expressway was built in the 1950’s, and quickly became obsolete. One by one, the mansions were torn down and replaced with businesses and churches.
The book was written in 1962, when the party was just getting started. The High Museum was known then as the Atlanta Art Association. In June of 1962, a plane full of prominent Atlanta residents crashed in Paris, killing all on board. As a memorial to those people, the Memorial Arts Center on Peachtree, at Fifteenth Street, was built.
Another phenomenon which is not explained by the book is the custom of naming everything here Peachtree. There are countless streets and institutions named for a fruit tree that likes warmer climates. Atlanta has a one street skyline, that stretches from Five Points to Peachtree Dunwoody Road, almost at the city limits. PG lives a quarter mile off Peachtree, in Dekalb County, and has no idea why Peachtree is a magic word.
